As submitted yesterday by email:

A motor fishing vessel is leaving a harbour basin to head out to sea.  Despite checking with the harbour master’s office before leaving his mooring, the skipper is surprised to find that the lifting bridge across the harbour approach channel has closed against him to allow an unscheduled light engine to cross.  Rather than dropping back to wait alongside the quay, he decides to hold the boat stationary against the incoming tide with the engine on a slow tick over and wait for the bridge to reopen.

To stay within the allowed 8" square foot print I decided to build the bridge as though it has been cut longitudinally down the centre and mount a mirror immediately behind it to give the impression of the full width bridge. A glass mirror would show a visible gap between the two images of twice the thickness of the glass, so I have used a sheet of mirror polished stainless steel which reflects off the front surface with almost no visible gap.

The three vertical red harbour control lights each side of the bridge showing that the channel is obstructed are lit with fibre optic cables from a single LED behind the backdrop.
