Following on from starting a 'Class 25 photos' thread a few weeks ago, I've found quite a few Class 26/27 photos from the 1980s.

Once again, I would like to invite all to join in and post their photos, including preserved examples.

Heljan have recently announced another run of oo gauge 27s, so I guess they must be popular with modellers.

Although mainly associated with Scotland, many were allocated to depots in England in their early days.

I'll start off with a couple of very clean (possibly ex-works)  examples at Eastfield 1982

More to the point, who accepted it back in that condition?

Looks like it has had a roll by all the panel damage down that side, plus first engine room window is distorted, and what about all the front end dents. Botched insurance job, a bit of filler and a splash of paint.....

My thought was that any attempt to model the bodysides like that, all rippled & dented, would just look like really shoddy modelling, instead of very realistic!! And everyone knows you shouldn't finish model locos off with gloss varnish!! :nono: :mosking: Edited by F-UnitMad

I must admit I hadn't notice all the panel damage on 26029. Here is 26004 also at Haymarket shed on 11.6.82 which also appears to have similar panel damage.

Possibly, the gloss paint finish exaggerates the problem.

Originally fitted with 4 headcode discs, by the 1980s they started to gradually disappear after works visits.

As you can see from photos already posted, locos appear with and without / open and closed discs. By the time they were repainted into Railfreight Grey, the discs had gone.

Ref the top photo, that was the "North West Diesel Day" on 25th April 1992, that train was the 08.52 Manchester Victoria - Bolton. 26040 failed at Bolton and 26001 took the train on to Preston where it terminated, the two locomotives spent the rest of the day dumped in the parcels sidings at Preston Station.
