In the pic at Darlington 5320 has oval buffers. It was the first class 26/1 and became 26028 under TOPS. I always thought that only Class 26/0 were built with oval buffers and Class 26/1 had round. Later most (all?) 26/0 changed to round buffers (was this during refurbishment during the 1980s?)

Was 5320 built like this with oval buffers, or had they been changed to oval for some reason?

Cheers, Tom.

I'm sure I read somewhere that 5320 (and maybe 5321) was a bit of a hybrid in that it had the coil secondary suspension but retained oval buffers.

I really should pay more attention to my own research, this picture has come up everytime I searched Flickr for 27040 for my next "to do" project. Swindon works 4th July 1984 I only dismissed it for saving because of the distance shot, I'd still like to know, why Swindon?

A number of Class 27s went to Swindon around that time. Presumably Glasgow was at capacity and Swindon had the expertise/needed the work. At least one 27, 019, finished its days at ZL, so possibly that was the parts bin for those being overhauled/repaired there.

I think it was mentioned  in the comments on one of the Flickr shots that it was a case of Swindon making use of the w/d locos to help make good the ones that were going back north. Presumably repair budgets were starting to be limited so, if repairs were too great, it was a case of replacement parts from a donor or a one-way trip to the scrap line.

D5320 was the first of the production BRCW Type 2's ,(26/1) ,and was built with Oleo round buffers, coil secondary suspension and tablet catchers under the drivers side windows. Upon receiving blue livery sometime in 1968 the buffers were changed to ovals and by the time it was TOPS renumbered to 26028 it had reverted back to Oleo round buffers. As far as I have evidence of none of the other 26/1's received oval buffers.

A summer scene at Glasgow Central, with an unidentified class 126 and a 27 at the buffers in June 1970.

Thanks Scott. I agree now you mention it.

I only associate the 126s with Central and services towards Ayr, but this was 1970 and the Edinburgh trains would still have some of those units.

I must concentrate more...

No problem.

Technically, I don't think that is a 126.  If it's the E&G InterCity units, I don't think they ever were allocated a TOPS code. The Ayr 126s were different units from memory, and not the same batch as the 79xxx units (E&G), although later some of the 79xxx vehicles were cascaded onto the Ayr route for use with the 126s.

They do look almost identical, however.
