I've just come across a set of rather nice photos by Ron Toop, https://www.flickr.com/photos/midsomer-norton-south-station/albums/72157629882634822/with/7264114234/

There are one or two rarities such as:

T9 at Bath

0-4-4 leaving Bath

You could be right, as the fourth digit of the smokebox number IMHO is clearly a '4'.

Noting that this comes from a set of photos for the Bath Extension, are there any other similar collections of Toop pix elsewhere on the web for other parts of the line I wonder?

Now this may not be popular and there are many other super photos but in terms of rarity this has to be near top of pile?

And given livery this must have been post closure access via Radstock?

Phil, those urls just lead me to the album. I'm guessing you're referring to the ones of the DMU at Writhlington, though. Note that the set sees to have been augmented with a coach from a (?) Class 101

It appears to be the RCTS Thames & Avon tour of April 6 1968. See https://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/

Ah sorry folks - have now corrected the links, yes Andy its the Class 117/8 with a 101 strengthener in the second one, the first is 4 x 2 car derby lightweight units on climb to Midford...

IIRC the Derby units could be the only recorded revenue diesel working along the full length of the line?

I was thinking a Maunsell, but it does appear to be an odd configuration. I wonder if it was an early conversion of an LSWR or some other carriage? The guard's ducket doesn't have the typical Maunsell look, and the beading isn't normal Maunsell either. Hopefully someone else will have the answer.

There were a few excursions from Birmingham to the south coast using DMUs in 1958/9

At least two including the one pictured went along the S&D.

Apparently another reached Ramsgate, some journey in a DMU.

Second attempt at posting a reply!

It looks like a Great Eastern to me.

Chris

The rest of the train looks Eastern Region in origin, so that would seem to make sense. Certainly a lone Maunsell in such a train would be odd.

Definitely an ex-GER 3-compartment corridor brake third and almost certainly still in LNER fake-teak brown. They were popular vehicles for ER-originating holiday trains because of the vast amount of passenger luggage that they could absorb.

Six Bells Junction lists at least four DMU specials travelling the S&D throughout.

This is the Derby set on 25 May 1958

https://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/50s/580525br.html

Birmingham - Bournemouth 17 February 1959, 7 cars including a 3 car Met Cam.

https://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/50s/590217b2.html

This was repeated with another 7 car on 17 May 1959 but no set details.

On 21 August 1960 there was a 6 car from Cheltenham to Bournemouth via the S&D.

This from Cheltenham St James to Lyme Regis did Mangotsfield to Templecombe on the way out with a Swindon Cross Country set on 10 May 1958.

Amongst the Toop photos is this one here:-

https://www.flickr.com/photos/midsomer-norton-south-station/7264169104/in/album-72157629882634822/

The location is just west of Moorewood, looking back towards the signal-box, with the Up sidings (for the Emborough stone works) hidden in the background. But what about the notice for Marcroft on the extreme left - I never knew that they had an outpost here?

Can anyone add any details please?

There is also a report  on Six Bells Junction of a DMU shuttle between Bath Green Park and Wellow during the Bath Festival in 1961.

I've also seen an uncorroborated claim of a Cardiff - Portsmouth DMU running between Bat Green Park and Templecombe on a diversion c1961/2. Haven't found any confirmation of that.

Thank you

Interestingly enough it includes pictures of loaded coal wagons heading south from Bath, demonstrating that The Somerset Coalfield didnt exclusivley supply the area served by the S&D

Weren’t the goods sidings shunted ‘from the south’ being served by north bound workings? I don’t know but looking at Midford traffic would, presumably, come from the Evercreech Junction direction? Therefore coal worked north would have to go south to go north again? I’m asking out of curiosity.... I really should know more about the S&D.
