Portpatrick
"Please try and keep comments positive...." Ah jolly good show. The Thompson coaches which quite recently being published as expected for release in August 2019 ( I was budgeting accordingly and have placed my pre order with Tim at Arcadia) have disappeared completely from the above list. How nice that they continue to announce new products at a time of mere aspiration without any realistic assessment of timescales. But I do see some better news for the Southern followers I know and other releases which will clearly please some/many.
Paul80
Looking on the bright side, no Thompsons means you are £150 richer than you thought;) Same good news for me as well as the 8F has failed to arrive for yet another year and no Class 31 either, so a nice cheap year for a pleasant change. All I need is for Hattons to delay their Garrett and I won't need to spend a penny this year on model rail item, so that will make SWMBO happy (if only it was that easy) Edited January 27, 2019 by Paul80
RMweb Premium acg5324 Posted January 27, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 27, 2019 Cheap first 6 months for me then 100 ton tanks, blue / grey Mk1 FK second issue.....first have been sold out for years, and then the Mk2Fs in December.....which probably means early 2020! Also I've noticed that the MK2F's seem to have slipped a month since this list was last produced.

csiedmo
Yet the maroon one (374-889) seems to have gone missing completely. GNR Dave
Good to see they've separated the birdcages and C class. In December they were saying all were expected in June. Now my card will have time to recover from the birdcages in April until the C class in August. Phew !
Karhedron
Am I missing something? I can't see 374-123 BR Mk1 RU Restaurant Unclassified BR (WR) Chocolate & Cream on that list. I thought this would be a pretty quick and simple one since it is just a repaint of an existing model.
RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted February 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 8, 2019 It has drifted out to TBA unfortunately. There definitely seems to be some considerable dragging of heels with certain existing tooling models at the moment, the Mk1's in particular.
woodenhead
Chocolate & Cream Mk1s were always slower sellers and Farish have released a lot of Mk1s since they upgraded them - I have them coming out of my ears. Perhaps they are considering new stock over re-runs at the moment in their scheduling - there should be plenty of Mk1s still around in smaller retailers and Ebay
Karhedron
True enough but the RU has never been released in choc and cream livery since Farish retooled the Mk1s.

Well I never realised that - I only have blue/Grey, maroon and Blood/Custard. Green might have followed once I began with the Bulleids but 4mm beckoned. fezza
I would have thought the RU in chocolate and cream would have been a good seller - but who knows? I also can't understand why there haven't already been more 170 varieties - just about the most widespread vehicle on the railways in the last two decades. I am starting to wonder whether the delays to deliveries and price rises are linked. In a very niche market where there are no alternatives, 'suppressing supply' through limited production helps sustain long-term price increases, increasing profit per unit. Suppliers never want to admit this, but any business economist knows its an established trick of the trade, especially in difficult times. The downside is that if you suppress it too much and there is little to collect, people just move to other gauges... or hobbies. RMweb seems reluctant to allow discussion of the constant price increases - they need the supplier ads of course - but ultimately I don't think its good for the future. Youngsters are stepping away and the days of gilt-edged pension pots are over for most older people.
RMweb Premium njee20 Posted February 11, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 11, 2019 Youngsters have been "stepping away" for about 50 years, and it's not price driven IMO. People new to the hobby don't remember the "halcyon days when locos were £4 and coaches were 80p". The thing I do find interesting is that Dapol don't seem to be pushing prices up to anything like the same extent, but I can think of no real reason they'd be immune from them, quite the opposite in fact as they don't have the benefit of their own factory. I don't know whether this is still the case but Dapol's business model used to be to pay off the tooling on the first run. This made subsequent runs more profitable, even without price increases. Looking ahead, I think Dapol's prices will rise, at least for new models. The forthcoming light pacifics are quoted with an RRP of around £200 IIRC. RMweb Premium njee20 Posted February 12, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 12, 2019 Makes sense, but it’s not like their initial runs tend to be more expensive (on modern stuff). The 68 was cheaper than re-releases from Farish. I’m sure prices will rise, it may just be they’re holding out longer for whatever reason.
Harley666
Glad I joined and have seen the schedule most of the items I am interested in, are not due for release until next year which allows more cash to build my layout this year.

Youngsters are stepping away and the days of gilt-edged pension pots are over for most older people. The reasons for the delays have been well documented and discussed on RMweb. As too have the price increases - there are lots of threads about it and it seems to have been chewed over to death. It might be worth having a search and read up of some of them. Traditionally youngsters have moved away from the hobby as they grow up and other interests like members of the other sex, getting an education, buying a home and starting a family take priority. But many return to railway modelling in later life when they are more settled and have the time (and money). The fear of the future for the hobby is not a new issue (and doom has always been forecast for various reasons) but it has survived so far. And it has encompassed and withstood much change (social empowerment, the digital revolution, inflation, foreign outsourcing, etc.,) over the years. I don't think the hobby is declining but perhaps getting the market for it to grow is the trick to achieve in the future. G

Recently announced Dapol class 33s are marginally more than Farish class 24s, and marginally less than the class 37s. So it isn't just Bachmann pushing prices up, it is more to do with volumes, and we're only a tiny island on this planet with a finite market for niche models.
