RMweb Premium JimFin Posted September 25, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 25, 2019 Well that was a bit of a chew but a 1200mm traverser module now complete with capacity for 1100mm trains over 6 tracks. Had to be designed to fit under the scenery and be demountable as it overlaps baseboard joints. Rebuilt the underframe of the centre baseboard so that the traverser turned through 90 degrees stows under the station for transporting. Track alignment is by bolts into 3d printed posts which also hold drop in protectors as tracks will be over free space when extended. Needed a ramp with 2 layers of cork to get the final alignment right but now running smoothly across all roads. Put me somewhat behind plan, as has a couple of weeks looking after the grandchildren, out with Neuburg 1913 to Halifax show this weekend and then be able to progress with this. Undecided about the headshunt or running a line into the second traverser track yet but these would be easy enough to add later, just glad to have got this up an working. 6
Simon Moore
Jim I was admiring the 1913 version at halifax show the other week. Beautiful layout, I think my swiss hom might have to come out of retirement at some point for another layout after seeing your layout.im also contemplating a swiss standard gauge steam layout. RMweb Premium JimFin Posted October 12, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 12, 2019 Glad you enjoyed it Simon, for me, it was a great weekend. I need to do a few maintenance jobs on 1913 as Halifax was the last show for it this year. A couple of sections of track at the baseboard joins need attention and as its all a learning curve, I have fitted a different design of protector for 2013 in transit and will retrofit that to 1913. The other "behind the scenes" item, I need to improve is the carry handles on the crates the layout is transported and stored in. Wish you all the best with Swiss steam traction - an interesting modelling project.
RMweb Premium JimFin Posted November 9, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 9, 2019 (edited) Been able to make a start at terra forming (at last), seem to have been diverted to the traverser, rewiring, installing uncoupling ramps and setting up RocRail and WiFi. Happily time for some "proper" modelling. "Draft" of the platform and canopy. Cement transfer facility. General view of 1st baseboard. duff man
Hi Jim, Your layout is coming on nicely, can I ask on your post of last Saturday the large house above the bus with the flowers on the balcony, Is it a kit or a scratch build please? If its a kit would you mind advising its parentage. Many thanks. Craig.
RMweb Premium JimFin Posted November 13, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 13, 2019 (edited) Hi Craig - large chalet is scratch built, foamboard ground floor, scribed and stained balsa for the first and second floors, cardboard roof with Redutx tiles, balconies, windows and doors are 3d printed and stained balsa strip with foam and flock to create the flower effect. Its a "modernised duplicate of the version on the 1913 layout. Edited November 13, 2019 by JimFin 3

RMweb Premium JimFin Posted November 21, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 21, 2019 Some more progress to share, 2 layers of plaster bandage and a skim with a plaster filler mixed with poster paints. Means that any little chips later on do not stick out like a sore thumb. Positioned the structures and temp backscene to check the overall look and quite satisfied. The traverser dimension was just right for the ravine! 3
RMweb Premium JimFin Posted November 25, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 25, 2019 And on with the rock face which many folk at exhibitions have asked about, to the extent I take an off cut of the Heki rock foil with me to let them touch and feel! I buy it in large sheets, 800mm X 300mm, hold it against the face to be covered and use a sharpie to mark on the back a rough cut line. Cuts easily with domestic scissors, then held in place while a bead from a hot glue gun is applied along about 75mm of the edge of the scenery to be covered. I press it into place with an old engineers hammer which acts as a heat sink to help the glue adhere, about 30 seconds. During this time the foil becomes very soft and can be moulded into shape with the hammer head. If you have not worked it out - DONT touch the foil during this process its really really hot. Here is idea of the outcome, this has used most of 1 sheet in 2 parts. 3

RMweb Premium JimFin Posted December 8, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 8, 2019 (edited) Ravine is progressing well, given the theme of same but different from 1913 to 2013, changes are the pipeline for the hydro plant, viewing point for the hiking trail and base for the intended hikers suspension bridge. Good find at Filisur in the retaining wall as I was wondering how to disguise a baseboard join. Edited December 8, 2019 by JimFin

RMweb Premium JimFin Posted January 6, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 6, 2020 (edited) Been able to make some progress having shaken off the festive cold! The footpath to the pedestrian bridge and on to the viewpoint is coming along nicely, can see a tree making session in my future. RMweb Premium JimFin Posted January 16, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 16, 2020 Having been wrangling with centenary and overhead lines, I am now committed to staying in the steam era! Given this is a sectional exhibition layout, anyone got tips for the overhead wire at the baseboard joins? Sommerfeldt posts and profi wire. RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted January 16, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 16, 2020 I created a 180° hook on each end of the contact wire and just hooked them around the arm on the masts. wire on the left is the removable one. The top carrier wire just curves over at 90° to sit over the insulator. on the gantries I just kept the top wire straight. Right hand wire is removable. left hand wire here is the removable one. RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted January 16, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 16, 2020 I’d also advocate something like this simplify cleaning under the wires, so easy but does need two locos to pull it on HOm! CMX track cleaner simply screw on Bemo coach bogies I had to file out a little to allow the 12mm wheels to swing freely
RMweb Premium JimFin Posted January 16, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 16, 2020 Many thanks Paul, I was thinking of something similar. Did you have a problem getting the span extensions onto the posts? I think I am going to have to file away about 1mm to get them to fit. Have to wait until a CMX comes up at a good price. Must admit, have not had a problem with dirty track since I saw a Liverpool MRC idea which I modified. Basically two sandwich bag clips that hold a strip of paper towel over the track at the fiddle yard which I soak with a few drops of cleaning alcohol. All wheels of every train that runs in or out get a clean.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted January 16, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 16, 2020 I seem to vaguely remember they needed filing or de-burring to get the spans on, twelve years ago now! I picked up the smaller N gauge CMX for just £30 a couple of years ago so patience may be rewarded
RMweb Premium JimFin Posted February 9, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 9, 2020 Well the electrification has progressed once I made some guides to set heights etc for the wires. What surprised me with the Sommerfeldt Profi wires is that I had to use a dremel to smooth the joins of the power wire and the droppers as pantographs were snagging on the joins. Advancing the station has been another job as it had to be done before gantries and wires restricted access. Still WIP but please with the way the lighting is working out.
RMweb Premium JimFin Posted February 9, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 9, 2020 This is how my height gauges for Sommerfeld work - The base is slotted at 12mm so it clips onto the track and is set to 69mm being the height of the cross wire. Just taped on a bit of wire with a 90 degree vertical hook at the end. Slide the cross wire support down the post onto the wire and solder to the outside of the post. Remove jig and solder inside. Top of the cross member is to be 100mm above the top of the track so the gauge is 93.3mm to the lower edge of the girder. Same process as before but making sure its at 90 degrees to the mast. Files for these and a 67mm gauge to set the height of the conducter wire are attached if anyone wants to print their own. I could run off a couple of sets if folk wanted them for the cost of postage, I designed them for Peco track and Sommerfeldt RhB componenets - I doubt if they would be any use for anything else. mast alignment tool (5).stl 2

RMweb Premium JimFin Posted February 22, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 22, 2020 (edited) Having finished the overhead knitting, the advice re track cleaning floated to the top of the pile but in the absence of a CMX cleaner becoming available, I read up on alternative and am giving a Sharge unit a go. (http://www.model-trainstrack-cleaner.co.uk/) Converted from HO by to HOm by using 2 spare Bemo coach bogies, fitting 7mm spacers and slightly longer bolts than supplied to preserve the ride height. Early days but seems to be doing the job so far. Edited February 22, 2020 by JimFin
