RMweb Gold MarshLane Posted March 4, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 4, 2019 Hi Alan, Like the back story you've created, looking forward to see how you get on. 7mm will seem large after you come back to it from finishing Louville Lane! Talking of which, I am off for a read... Rich

Personally I am using cassettes on Black Notley. I automatically assumed Norfolk too and didn't know of the one in Gloucestershire. You learn something new every day!
Popular Post westerner
A little more detailing, chalk marks as suggested by Chris Klein. I also thought I'd give the photos a Forest of Dean background. I ought to build a small diorama for taking photos until the layout is built. I does give a feel of what the layout might look like. I printed of a few different ones.
westerner
Not a lot done in the last week. I've started the brake van . At the moment I am trying to understand the instructions and diagrams for putting together the brake gear. I've read and re read the instructions. I suppose it will be a case of just go for it. I'' let you know how I get on.
westerner
Progress so far on the Brake van. I think I might be thought heretical with my next statement. I wonder why I wasted so much time on the brake actuation gear when it can't be seen. Come to think of it when I was looking at prototype photos I could not see it. In future I'll only model what can be seen, after all this a layout Van not a showcase model. Still to do, footboards. handrails and painting the body. 14 3

If it can't be seen, it doesn't go on. This is based on the pragmatic principle that I do not run my rolling stock upside down. 5 3 1 2

westerner
My mojo is flagging a bit as I wrestle with doing the handrails on the outside of the Toad, perhaps stupidly I thought the wire that came with the kit was too small a diameter, so I decided to use 0.8mm wire, it looks better but............................ it meant drilling all the brackets, no real problem, but it did make them more fragile and they are rather small. 5 went flying into the carpet and only 3 were found, so made a couple up. the problem with the thicker wire is making the bends in the correct place. The problem with the brackets, the ones that fit in the slots provided, they are fractionally too, big so have to be filed down, which is why they started flying around the room, My fingers have never been over dexterous and with old age and a touch of arthritis dealing with the small and fiddly is increasingly difficult. I suspect when it is finished the side I'm doing at the moment may well look as though there has been some collision damage. Hopefully when I start on the other side I will have learnt some lessons and be able to apply them. At the moment I am taking a break from it for I fear I may do substantial damage to the rest of the model in my frustration.
westerner
Thought I ought to show my rather poor attempt of doing the guard rails, I'm hoping the other side will be neater. As I said in my previous post it does look as if there has been some poorly repaired collision damage. The roof is at the moment just placed on. Still have footboards and lamp irons etc to do.
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted April 7, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 7, 2019 Hi Alan, I don't think it is all that bad. I have seen far worse ones on E Bay. Cheers, Ade. 2
westerner
I've done the handrails on the other side, they are a bit better but nowhere near perfect. thank goodness this is a layout model, I hope. It did occur to me during my struggles, considering this is a plastic kit why Parkside did not make the handrails and knobs a one piece plastic moulding? As is obvious the roof is still just plonked on. Next will be buffers lamp irons and footboards. And then I must get some decals for the area, I'm thinking of Bullo Pill (just down the line, Lydney or Gloucester. 10

It seems slightly perverse that they are mounted in plastic brackets and that one must hold a soldering iron within a couple of millimeters of the plastic border in order to join the ends of the handrail. westerner
Work on the brake van progresses very slowly, however I suddenly realised I'd not posted any photos of the loco that caused the change of size and direction, let me present my Dapol pannier. I hope I weather it as well as I did my 4mm one.

CK The first thing I did with my handrails was to ditch the brass wire and replace it with nickel silver. Having got wire that was straight I then bent it to shape, and put the joint on the bottom section of the handrail, then and slid the plastic mounts onto the wire and did a dry run to make sure everything fitted together. Removing the wire and mounts from the van side I then made sure that all the mounts were moved around the wire to the opposite end to the joint, and then soldered it together. I then refitted the wire and glued the mounts into place. Saves trying to either melt the mounts or put a hole in the van side. 3 3
westerner
hopefully when weathered it will look something like this one, one of my Bachmann panniers on Wencombe and Kingsbridge Regis.
westerner
At last painted the hand rails, not brilliant but better than I thought it would look, still possibly needs thinning in places but we will see after weathering etc. Still lamp brackets and footboards to add. I think I've decided n Bullo Pill as the markings, order will be going to CCT.
westerner
Inching towards the end of this project, Decals from CCT now attached, by the way wonderful return of post service from John. Chassis has had basic weathering before the footboards are put in place. Also the lamp irons need affixing. You may have noticed I've started on the weathering of the 16t mineral wagon.

westerner
Added the footboards on the other side on Monday, as I'll be away for a few days the lamp brackets will have to wait, probably until I've sent and received an order to Modelu for lamps (brake van and loco) and figures, loco crew and guard. That will be done when I return. Edited May 9, 2019 by westerner
westerner
I must apologise for not posting anything in the last three weeks, a holiday and then almost immediately attending a regatta has meant that modelling etc have been on hold. I am just about to get some bits from Modelu, drivers etc and when they arrive it will kick start me into getting the guards van finished
sb67
No need to apologise Alan, sounds like you've been busy. Hope you enjoyed your holiday and look forward to seeing the guards van. Steve. 1
westerner
A new wagon is being built, this time and ex GWR 5plank open. Still needs buffers etc and painting the body, The chassis has had its first bit of weathering.
westerner
An update on the 5 plank wagon. Before painting I thought I'd go over the plank lines with pencil hoping that that would show the planks in more definition when painted. I'm not sure how effective it was. After painting I also had a go at painting the bare wood of the inside of the wagon I leave the judgement up to you.
