Popular Post Edwardian
This is not a subject that I recall seeing modelled before, but these were, and remain, minor architectural gems in many of our towns and cities. In response to a perceived threat from resurgent Second Empire France in 1859, Britain took defensive steps, including the raising of a volunteer force. From 1864 the volunteers were empowered to acquire land. As a result, over time, many Drill Halls or "Sheds" were built in a variety of architectural styles, often quite ornate. This one is inspired by a drill hall that once stood in Norwich. It uses Scalescenes papers for the main textures. I've been going at this since September, and I often thought of Alan Downes as I built it; he had been very generous concerning my first efforts and I appreciated this and was greatly encouraged. I'd like to think he'd enjoy such an architectural flight of fancy bodged out of card and paper. 32 1

Devo63
A very nice piece of scratch building sir. I remember when you first started this project and thought it was an ambitious project at the time. I am suitably impressed with the level of detail you have captured on the model and the great finish to the various items of trim on the structure. katwigan
I think that is as Downesesque (?) as I have ever seen! I am sure he would more than 'enjoy' your effort, I would think probably 'Doff his hat" if He had one! Kevan 1 2
Talltim
The best models make you feel like you should explore them, walk up the path and in the door and find all the rooms inside. This definitely does. As a matter of interest, is the 'back' detailed too? Edited February 8, 2019 by Talltim
Edwardian
36 minutes ago, Talltim said: As a matter of interest, is the 'back' detailed too? Not really, as it won't be seen. The rear view does show the section of Mediaeval curtain wall incorporated into the structure. At Castle Aching the line runs through the former outer bailey of the castle. The large half-round tower is also part of the Mediaeval wall, but has been "restored" out of all recognition. This was the case with the drill hall at Chapel Hill Road Norfolk that was my inspiration, so, a model building with a 'history' based upon a prototype! 36 minutes ago, Talltim said: The best models make you feel like you should explore them, walk up the path and in the door and find all the rooms inside. This definitely does. Some of the lads are seen in the interior of the hall and, in case I ever install lighting, the officer's mess has a basic interior. It's rather rough and ready because, even if lit, I suspect not much will be seen through the Gothic stained glass window! I am very grateful and humbled by the "reactions" and comments, not least from a number of the Community's 'master builders' whose work I have long admired. Thank you all Edited February 8, 2019 by Edwardian 8

justin1985
Amazing modelling James! I'm glad you've given it it's own thread How did you make the arches and string courses etc? I can't tell if they're covered with brickpaper? Or cut/carved from card and painted to match the brickwork? There are a huge number of those little arches, and they all look incredible! RMweb Gold ianLMS Posted July 4, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 4, 2019 Very impressive work there James. It is a stunning model with true character and perfectly represents the buidlings in and around that area! Sorry I havent had chance to catch up with you lately - the new RMWeb takes some getting used to and i've been quite busy in my own little world. I hope you and the family are doing well! Did you make it to York this year? I went and yet again, spent a fortune. Next one is Warley apart from a couple of small local ones later in the year. Hope to catch up with you later! Edwardian
Thanks, Ian. I see that you have been busy to good effect on the excellent Jencaster with several Severn Models brass kits, and with signalling. Yes, Ian, I did make York. I bagged the Severn Models' greenhouse, for CA. I have not been to Warley since 1990-something, so plan to make the effort this year. Marly51
A lot of work, Edwardian, with all that complex detail, but the end result is really worth it! I have been putting off returning to the larger layout I am working on, because 2mm scale gets a bit intensive at times and I have no problem moving sideways to smaller projects in larger scales!! That sepia ‘postcard trick is quite clever!!
