Today involved a little bit more 3D printing design work and a bit of trial and error.

I already had some laser cut signs for the box but they had their limitations due to how they were made. I therefore decided to 3d print some instead.

I drew up the design on SketchUp and then chucked the design into the 3d printer.

IMG_20211110_223337_949.jpg.635b9b91290c4051e2090ed634bf9dab.jpg

Attempt 1 looks ok however they look a little thin on the edges turning over to the back you can see why ....

IMG_20211110_223338_076.jpg.b244298b1831b3a922882dae8c2b13ec.jpg

I needed to add more supports as they had become detached when printing and were pulling away from the build plate. They are only 1.5mm thick anyways so it is always going to be tough keeping them attached to the build plate.

IMG_20211110_223338_119.jpg.4c22bd14d42429279453a2a0a01ac952.jpg

Attempt 2 and I managed to get one come out just right. Time to give it a lock of paint.

IMG_20211110_223338_143.jpg.5233e049bdcc8209d9f6e9f4e9bc5a97.jpg

After a coat of Halfords spray paint for the green I then picked out the frame and letters with a detail brush. I will let it dry before attaching to the box, speaking of which...

IMG_20211110_191943.jpg.26c05d19a225af0ee350a3a0f563cc76.jpg

End door was today added and the rodding cover was also put together and painted, it currently isn't fixed in place and is just leaning against the bottom of the box. IMG_20211110_191940.jpg.ac3a5b647b0d32122442d2b811a00b7a.jpg

Guest Jack Benson

Pete,

when copying your Kadee uncouplers, I found creating a recess for the magnets could be challenging. On a certain auction website, I bought a Marples 3mm mortice chisel for reasonable cost considering the quality. It requires care but it does the job.

Ah, "proper" steel.  That'll outlive us all and still be sharp.

What's this a little side project??

I recently have had another look at what stock I have and have shuffled some sets around to make them more appropriate and also had a look at the kit built bulleids I had part assembled and found that one of them will be of use as a loose brake which was very common on formations like the ACE.

I did however want a couple more dining coaches to add to some of my express trains with Hornby's latest release of the maunsell restaurant I should be able to complete another set.

However when doing some reading I wanted to make the bulleid tavern cars. Having read some other people's threads who have made them on here I settled on using a Hornby mk1 as a doner and have ordered the sides and unframe gear from wizard models.

I will be doing the tavern car in crimson and cream post 51 rebuild and the restaurant coach also post rebuild which is how they would have run from 51 to 59 when the taverns were rebuilt to  a more conventional design.

Having IMG_20211214_143254.jpg.b4394c38796c90247c031c49a2223988.jpgtaken the coaches apart I then chopped off all the under carriage gear as none of this can be used.

IMG_20211214_155236.jpg.088c361345dea1c1f5592340dad9a2a4.jpg

The roof has had all rainstrips and vents cut off and sanded. This will be further filled and sanded before new details being added.

IMG_20211214_155259.jpg.49780f450621ba1c4a5d176fbc39eaa0.jpg

Bye bye buffers the end of the tevern car connected to the restaurant coach had no buffers as they were intended to be permanently coupled.

IMG_20211214_151954.jpg.771798975af877a731373650d8f6b3fd.jpg

A general view of how the sides will attach onto the Hornby donors.

More to follow.

Cheers

Plans and planning

I mentioned in my previous post that I had got hold of a copies of the station building plans. I cropped and resized the images by using my 4mm to the ft scale ruler as well as the measurements on one of the drawings in order to convert the originals to the size I will need. As previously discussed all of the drawings differ slightly from reality so things such as windows and door ways will need to be swapped around. I will only be the shorter part of the station that included the refreshment room and booking hall, the rebuilt waiting rooms and porters offices would have been in the part that I have to omit.

IMG_20200509_145019.jpg.ab5d53e33213cbe854e312c19736ebd2.jpg

In order to give the impression of the two stories I will cut a hole in the baseboard where I have crossed out and set this part of the board down to the lower floor of the building. The rest of it will sit at baseboard height but you will never see that. Only the end wall will be seen so it will give the impression of the end of the plateau the station was built on. I'll then build the staircase down as well as the slope itself.

678777588_signalboxscan.jpg.fb965a5db0b496fca8dcf44e61500973.jpg

I had found a picture on the internet that someone had hand drawn of Ilfracombe box and having checked it over time and again I had missed the fact that it said it was copied from railway modeller August 1970 so I managed to find a copy off of eBay and there you go Mr P.A. Brown had written an article and drawn the pictures of the box. I have again scanned in the drawings and rescaled them so I now can work from them to scratch build the signalbox.

814801478_ilfracombeadaptedleverframe.jpg.ebcd17e6d6d7a3f50f5b8e82cae0a214.jpg

Finally I have also been working out the lever frame from the track diagrams that I have of Ilfracombe. There was a 50 lever frame with a number of spares. I have had to omit a couple of levers where I have changed the layout of the shed but for the most part it's not far off what would have actually been there. The descriptions for the levers are my interpretation of what they would have controlled working from the diagram so in reality may have had different wording. This diagram will be useful for me when building the signal box interior as well as planning the rodding runs out of the box.

Cheers again

Pete

Hi Pete,

Your Ilfracombe layout looks to be progressing well.

Could I ask a favour?

I'm going to print the image of the Ilfracombe signal box plans but don't now what the real size is. Could you do me a favour and measure in millimetres and share a few of the key measurements from the original article please?

Thanks

Previously lost images have been restored where possible in the topic so I guess its time for an update....

The signal box has been finished and given an interior, I 3d printed some of the concrete bases for it to stand on and have then used DAS to bed it into the baseboard

The Taxi hut building has also been 3D printed which is my first attempt at printing a full building. It was a little wobbly on the base but thats been fixed with the DAS base aswell.

A  fiddle yard extension has been built so I can have longer trains

IMG_20221117_190527.jpg.a2e9d6b9d4bbe8cdbf14f8ff93e6fcf9.jpg

A yard crane was designed and 3d printed based off a picture of the real thing. The base is just a block of wood clad in plasticard with 3d printed steps.

The Turntable has undergone some more detailing with soldering wire handrails and also plating over the centre of the sleepers

Errr....nice lever-frame, but - sorry to say this - it has been put together the wrong way round! The catch-handles should be at the back of the levers, not the front.

Lever 27 seems to be a curious colour and, as an electric release, should have a cut-down handle - as can be seen in a interior view of the prototype photo - not that many people will see into the box that far to notice :-)

The big project I have been working on lately was the next laser cut kit from Andy at Railmodel.co.uk I sent him the drawings I had transposed to libreCAD and he made me the kit for Ilfracombe goods shed. This has been given a full interior and just remains to have lights added. I 3d printed the Chimney and the kit was provided with laser cut individual strips of roof tiles which have been laid on top of each other to create a very satisfying effect.

The final building to make a start on is the loco shed. I am going to try and 3d print this in sections and then fill in the sides with plasticard plus 3d printed windows. So far ive done one section and it looks like it might be a viable way to do it although I am yet to get any further with this part of the project as it takes a fair amount of time to print each section and thats without accounting for any failures.

Oh no I've dropped a howler there, it's amazing what you can manage to mess up even  with photos sat Infront of you.

It's going to bother me now so fingers crossed I can unglue it and try to fix this major cock up , alternatively I'll be ordering a couple more kits to try again.

@RailWest any thoughts on a better colour for lever 27 ?

Maybe I can blame it on no longer being acquainted with levers for my day job instead being replaced with the IECC clicky mouse 🤔

By that time the 'standard' for electrical releases was top half of the lever blue, bottom half brown. Sadly the only interior photo that I have seen is too dark and from the wrong angle to tell if the lever was two-tone or not.

'Mice' have a lot to answer for.....:-)
