kes
For a while now I have had an idea to do something that was not MR/LMS/BR Midland or LNER/BR North Eastern. Maggie suggested that something other than maroon and black would make a change, so I sketched out an idea that would go down one side of the shed, using 3' x 18" lightweight boards and be sectional so it could be exhibited. I have 12' for the scenic section, and 3'6" for the 4 road traverser. Playing around with anyrail showed I could get a small country terminus, with a run around loop, bay platform and some facing and trailing sidings comfortably in the space available. The fiddle yard is on the right hand end. The boards are made of 44mm x 15mm planed timber and 6mm ply tops with plenty of cross members. You can pick them up with one finger! The plan was drawn out full size on the boards and Peco templates stuck down to ensure adequate fouling clearance for the passing loop. The point work is all going to be bullhead rail soldered to copper clad sleepers, mounted on 2.5mm mount board so the rail height agrees with the plain Peco track Once I was happy the plan worked, by moving real locos and stock around on the printed plan, I started gluing down the mount board and copper clad sleepers. That is where I am up to at the moment, as it is pretty cold at this time of year! A view from the far left hand end of the boards. The end of the run around loop Views from further down the board from the fiddle yard. Edited May 13, 2023 by kes New name 8

kes
For the last few days I have been resurrecting an old Lima Toad, by fitting wider foot boards, raising the body 2mm, and adding new handrails. It doesn't look too bad now it is painted. It needs weathering and varnishing. I also read an old magazine article about turning a 20T LMS van into a 15T Cambrian Railway van, by cutting-and shutting the body, (bit like an older dodgy second hand car dealer). I had an old van kit about, so after some calculation, I lost the area where the duckets are, using a razor saw, and glued it back together. Same distance removed from the solebars, and some new doors made by scribing plasticard. There are some photos of the prototypes about on the internet. So here is my GWR brake van train! It is not going anywhere until I start laying he track. Edited February 17, 2019 by kes 10 1

Popular Post kes
Something a little off-subject, but it is sat on the new layout! A LNER N10 (NER class U) built out of my favourite items - plasticard, and scrap aluminium tube. Just about ready for a coat of primer. mosquito
I'm liking that plasticard and aluminium creation, where can I get scale drawings for that one or similar 0-6-0.
kes
I just searched on Google for lner n10 and found a line drawing on line.

Mrkirtley800
That is a very nice piece of modelling Kevin, and of an interesting prototype. Derek
kes
Thanks Derek, it is now in black and awaiting my application of transfers and maybe red lining.
kes
Sorry about the lack of progress - I have been finishing off 4 Gresley suburbans, which are now ready for varnish, and tidying up the shed so I can actually start building the points on this layout. At least I can see it all again!

Popular Post kes
Hi Rod, the engine is now black and awaiting the final satin varnish and weathering, but the temperature has dropped so I need to wait a while until it is safe to spray again. Here are a few photos of the ex-works engine standing. Edited December 29, 2022 by kes missing photos 18
RMweb Gold MarshLane Posted April 12, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 12, 2019 I have read the post right - that is a scratchbuild ... not a kit? Amazing work, well done. Rich
kes
Thanks Rich for the kind comments -yes it is scratch-built out of plasticard, aluminium tube and a few white metal castings.
pwr
YOu wouldn't know that is not an etched kit Paul R
kes
The coaches now have all the windows in and all the transfers on. Weathering is now required. Edited December 29, 2022 by kes missing photos 11

I also have a Lima Toad, planned as a version with the veranda end boarded up, the foot boards removed and brake levers fitted. It will run in a mixed freight, in transit.... I had not heard of adding 2mm to the height. Is that to remedy a Lima design error? Anyway it looks smart.
kes
Hi, Lima o gauge models are to a scales of 1/50 whereas British o gauge is 1/43, so the width and height are smaller when placed against UK models. The increase in height between the body and the chassis disguises this a little.
kes
The dark side now has the first rail soldered to the sleepers on the first point, so progress has started.
kes
I have managed to get a few hours in the shed, and two of the seven points now have rails soldered on, and stock run through the crossings - all seems OK. I may get back in there today and make point number three! There will be cosmetic chairs added to the rail sides once they are all built and working correctly.
