kes
I have now added the run around loop and checked the clearances with the carriages. All appears well. I am glad I have a bench grinder for all the point blades. I finished them off using a oil stone for a smooth finish. kes
Today I have been laying and aligning a lot of the plain track, so things are looking much neater.
kes
Whilst away on holiday I started work on the Collett bow ended coach kits. One body is now complete. Today I finished laying the plain track, so there is only the traverser to do now.
kes
Finally got around to posting the photos of the traverser alignment. This is done by a 1/8th inch steel rod, inserted vertically through a piece of copper clad into a brass tube set vertically into the end framing. There will be wiping contacts on the copper clad, so aligning the track completes the electrical circuit. kes
I have been underneath the layout doing some of the wiring and working out the pin-outs of the 25d connectors back to the control panel, which is housed in a rather good Taylor's port box. kes
Today I finished the wiring under the boards and tested it all. To my surprise it all works with no shorts or open circuits. I must get on with building the control panel and drinking the bottle of port! Edited August 28, 2019 by kes added photos
kes
The wiring will be tidied up with cable ties and supports once it is all tested thoroughly.
kes
Did a bit of shunting today to check the passage of wheels through the crossings and across the board joints. A little remedial work was required with a needle file in places as the track and boards settle down.
kes
Not much progress at this time of the year. I have moved all the stock out of the shed for the winter and have commenced the construction of two Kirk GWR Collett suburban coaches. Edited November 23, 2019 by kes Spell checker! kes
Recently I bought a few projects inside. One of these is to convert a couple of Slaters O gauge tank wagon kits into the GWR United Dairies 4 wheel wagons. This has involved replacing the tank barrel with smooth plastic tube. I found one of my wife's discarded hair sprayers was the right diameter. I have added the 3-plank side board to the frame under the tank, and removed the heavy moulding where the diagonal rods terminate on the outside of the chassis. I intend to have a couple of representative tanks from this series, so they will not be 100% accurate.
kes
The remaining details are coming from the few photos I have. I need to add ladders to the tanks, so will be using brass signal laddering.
kes
I got some ladders today, so bent them to shape and added the remaining tank details. There is some filling to do, then I can paint it and add the transfers. Edited December 29, 2022 by kes missing
kes
Due to the unseasonable weather I have been able to spray the tank and chassis, and have started adding the transfers. These are Fox for the GWR and Slater's for the United Dairies logos. I had forgotten how much trouble you can have with Methfix transfers, but I got there in the end. RMweb Premium Hal Nail Posted February 1, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 1, 2020 (edited) nice work - good to see someone building the brakes so they would actually work! Edited February 1, 2020 by Hal Nail
kes
Thanks Hal - it took me while to figure out which lever went on which side, and which way up the pull/push rods went, even then I glued one set on the wrong way around and had to remove and refit it! kes
I have two more spare ends, four axle guards and some wheels/brake parts, so with some more plastic channel and sheet, another one could be built.
kes
The tank now has the ladders and tank locating straps added. Still needs tare numbers adding. Edited December 29, 2022 by kes missing
kes
I recently bought off ebay some parts comprising resin sides, a wooden roof and 4 axle guards, for a GWR Fruit D, made by Q kits. I have added parts from plasticard and strut, and I am slowly making progress. Edited December 29, 2022 by kes missing
kes
I have a diagram for the brake gear so I should be able to make that from scrap. I have made one axle pivot by sleeving the axle using 1/8" bore tube and soldering a cross piece of 2mm rod to it, which pivots freely in the bent brass strip mounted on the floor. The axle ends are cut off so they don't foul the axle box castings.
brossard
I can help with the Fruit D. I recently built the JLTRT kit which includes the underframe detail: John
