Stubby47 21,489 Posted February 13 (edited) Yes. I remember Adlestrop The name, because one afternoon Of heat, the express-train drew up there Unwontedly. It was late June. The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat. No one left and no one came On the bare platform. What I saw Was Adlestrop—only the name And willows, willow-herb, and grass, And meadowsweet, and haycocks dry, No whit less still and lonely fair Than the high cloudlets in the sky. And for that minute a blackbird sang Close by, and round him, mistier, Farther and farther, all the birds Of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. A simple coach window silhouette, framing the scene above. Possibly. Edited February 13 by Stubby47
Mikkel 9,264 Posted February 13 Nice idea. Coach windows, your specialty! What scale were you thinking of? The letering could be tricky in 4mm?
Stubby47 21,489 Posted February 13 Slaters Plasticard letters might work, but 7mm or possibly bigger to fill the space. Bigger letters could be cut on the Silhouette.
GeoffinOz 211 Posted February 13 Try laser engraved. Justin of Model Railway Scenery might be able to help, and it would be the same as the picture, embedded in the wood. and you already have the 200 words. 1
Northroader 7,286 Posted February 13 (edited) The old station sign was put up with a GWR seat at the bus stop nearer the middle of the village. The one in your picture is, I think, a “replica” close to the old station site. Careful with the font, you’ll see slight differences. I’m afraid I haven’t used it for yonks, so I’ve forgotten what it’s called. Edited February 13 by Northroader The poem also appeared on a plaque in the shelter. 1
dibber25 6,824 Posted February 14 I hope the original board and seat in the bus shelter are still there, that 'replica' is so obviously a fake. Nice idea, but there's nothing ever quite like the real thing, and wondering whether the board that got saved was the actual one that Edward Thomas was looking at. Stubby47 21,489 Posted February 14 Thanks Chris. From the actual text, the platform was bare: "On the bare platform. What I saw Was Adlestrop—only the name And willows, willow-herb, and grass, And meadowsweet, and haycocks dry," so what I'll model instead is just a name board at the back edge of the brick-paved platform, with an old fence and appropriate foliage behind. I'll also use a 6"x 8" base, with a 8" height to get the "high cloudlets" in.
Barry Ten 9,146 Posted February 14 One of my favorite poems, and a great subject for a cakebox challenge.
Stubby47 21,489 Posted February 14 I've made a start on the basic platform and bank behind. This is 6" deep and 8" wide.
Stubby47 21,489 Posted February 15 Added some bricks and slabs: The huge gap between the platform bricks and the edge slabs is not really there, it's a shadow and will disappear with some paint. The card has been scored between the slabs, but these knife lines may need a little widening.
Stubby47 21,489 Posted February 16 As the track bed is quite narrow, I'll only need one rail and some shortened sleepers.
Stu70 86 Posted February 16 Stu nice work on the cake box. Can I ask what scale you are modelling, will be following with interest.
Stubby47 21,489 Posted February 16 Thanks, both the cakeboxes are 7mm.
Stubby47 21,489 Posted February 17 Track has been cut to length, now needs the webs removing from between the sleepers, then sticking down & ballasting. Might give it a coat of paint first too.
Stubby47 21,489 Posted February 17 Track and lower rows of bricks now painted with H173 Track Colour. Higher bricks dry-brushed with H73 as a first thin coat. 2
Stubby47 21,489 Posted February 17 (edited) A further dry-brush coat of H70, applied whilst the previous coat is not fully dry, gives this nice brick colouring. Edited February 18 by Stubby47
Stubby47 21,489 Posted February 18 Some paint has been added to the platform surface. 7
caradoc 2,539 Posted February 18 A beautiful poem and a wonderful idea too, being superbly executed Stubby47. I wonder if a CD is available of typical Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire birdsong......?

Not too long ago there was a layout set in Oxfordshire (Windrush?) on the exhibition circuit that had exactly that playing quietly in the background.
Stubby47 21,489 Posted February 19 Railings have been primed, will hopefully get a chance to measure and drill holes today.
Stu70 86 Posted February 19 Stu nice job on the platform area and the dry brushing to the wall.

I have thought about a sound track - there are several recordings of the poem on line and a mix including throat clearing and birdsong could be made. It's just not so easy to convey that in a photo.
Stubby47 21,489 Posted February 19 (edited) The fence is in, but not fixed as it needs painting. Edited February 19 by Stubby47 4

Given the relevance of the poem to the concept for this entry, worth asking the adjudicators / editors if provision for a sound (video?) submission can be made - I may not model in DCC surround sound, but many do. Just a thought.
Kevin Johnson 749 Posted February 19 Hi Stubby47 this cake box sounds and looks great. I look forward to seeing more.
