OO/4mm Loco Drawings

Recommended Posts

Gents,

I've on the lookout for a book or sheets of 4mm/OO Gauge loco drawings, specifically the modellers type i.e. side/front elevation, plan etc with all the pertinent dimensions. I can't for the life of me remember who used to produce these and whether they were in book format or supplied loose, but can anyone point me in the right direction with regard to a source or a publication? The names Roche and Skinley come to mind, but I can't find anything online resembling a catalogue or description of what's available.

Specifically I'm looking for plans of NBR/GNSR/HR/CR locos.

Thanks in advance,

I think the HMRS are your friend for the catalogue of Skinley drawings, which covered a good number of Scottish subjects.

HMRS do have quite a stash of drawings as per the website, but they seem to be facsimilies of original works drawings rather than those designed for the modeller.

The North British Railway Society publishes a couple of books of loco drawings, and can also supply individual prints, see https://www.nbrstudygroup.co.uk/sales/pdfs/jul_2018_price_list.pdf and sell to non-members with a small extra mark up.

There is a book of Highland loco drawings, by Peter Tatlow, from OPC and a similar one on GNoSR locos from, I think, Irwell Press.

The Roche drawings have a poor reputation for accuracy, and had a limited range, at least those that Ian Allan published in a ring bound book. The Skinley range, wherever they may be at the moment, also date back sixty years, and, at least in those days, came as a blueprint sheet, with fairly basic detailing.

Could it be the book 'Historic Locomotive Drawings in 4mm Scale' by F J Roche, Ian Allan , SBN 7110 0087 5

I've got a copy and will look in the morning to see what the contents are.

There is a websiite which has an index of plans in model railway magazines

www.brmna.org

Go to modelling information, then Magazine index of drawings and articles, this will give you a start to see what has been drawn

It is a respectable index, but it does not appear to have been updated since 2001!

Yes,  I know its hard work creating an index, just pointing out that a lot of information has been published since then!

IIRC the Roche Drawing book only covered more modern types.   The HR types are  well covered in the Tatlow book. The Caley and GSWR have drawings available from their respective Societies.  There were a few GNofS drawings by John Emslie in the late 50s Railway Modeller (which I still have). My friend Peter Westwater produced a series of drawings of NBR types  (4 and 7mm). No longer available commercially but I could help if I knew what exactly you wanted.

best wishes,

Ian

The Stephenson Locomotive Society have published two books of locomotive drawings over the years. They are compilations of drawings by various draftsmen. The first was printed in 1939 with all sorts of different scales, the second appeared in 1992 with all the drawings to 4mm scale. Only side elevations are given in all but a few cases. Both books are, of course, out of print but available second-hand.

MAP published Locomotives Worth Modelling by F.C.Hambleton.

J.N.Maskelyne's Locomotives I Have Known.

Railway Modeller have done A Collection of Locomotive Drawings and Monographs  by Ian Beattie which had been in the magazine.

Jim,

All the Highland's locomotives, post circa 1880, are drawn and some of them from before then,  Most are in Highland Railway Locomotives by Peter Tatlow which is pretty easy to come by on Ebay or specialist resellers.

The few exceptions (notably the Loch) have been drawn.  They have been published in magazines (the Loch in the Model Railway Constructor I think, the rebuilt Loch in the Highland railway Society Journal).

All the drawings are held by the Highland Railway Society.  They also publish a list of drawings and articles in the various magazines over time, which is available to the public here.
