Pace Yourself - photos of the final(?) Pacer countdown

...By the way, if anyone wants a picture of Pacers on the Sheffield - Lincoln line, I think they only work this route on Sundays at the moment.

Yes, the Lincoln trains in the week are now worked through from Leeds via Barnsley semi-fast as 158s normally. The plan is for the Leeds-Lincoln to miss out the smaller stations between Sheffield and Worksop, with an additional stopping train every hour between Sheffield and Retford or possibly Gainsborough. Possibly from this May?

A bit cruel making the Welsh Pacers carry big adverts announcing their demise:

image.png.0cf65a2a155d01793f8908e8750459b1.png

I was quite amused recently when a couple of passengers were looking at a "road map" (as they called it) for the TFW franchise. "Pacers replaced in 2019," one read out, followed by "What's a Pacer?" They were on one at the time.

They haven't been used as a political football in these parts so I think have a somewhat lower profile than in other parts of the UK.

Well, I’m travelling back from York to Hull on the 16.48 departure. It’s formed of 155345 and 142018. You can guess which unit I’m enjoying the return journey in.

Best regards,

Rob.

Good use of "enjoy" as a relative term there. Some of those 155/153s are a bit stinky and noisy I find.

Meanwhile, here, a Welsh one in Yorkshire on its way from Doncaster Works back home

Here is Northern 144002 working 2W17 arriving at Brighouse earlier today.  A short journey for which I feel that a Pacer is ideally suited - Leeds to Huddersfield via Bradford Interchange.

And by way of a treat for those not living in a part of the country where a Pacer is likely to turn up - here's a video of 144002;

144002 working 2W17 departing Brighouse on 1st March 2019.

Not being near to the land of nod(ing donkeys!), here's a few pictures of the ones I've seen on my travels around the country. All are of the Northern flavour. I've not as yet sampled a ride on one, something to do this year before they start to disapear.

Sorry, can't manage this year - I've not been to Wales or Northern routes yet - but here's two slightly earlier images from 23rd March 2013; interior of a Class 143 on the Cardiff to Fishguard service (coupled to a 150 which continued alone beyond Carmarthen) and 143616 entering Whitland from Pembroke Dock:

In addition to showing Northern Rail's Pacers (as they were the operating TOC at the time), these two photos also show something else that has now passed into history - Hatfield Main Colliery and the rail linked coal loading point.

A couple from the early '90's at a guess.  Seen at  night at Wigan N.W. and Warrington B.Q. in heavy rain. I never wasted valuable film on these, i just used the last of a roll up on 'em.:D

Makes me wonder just how many of what we think are the most interesting photos for showing the most ordinary that's now gone were taken for the same reason.

Yes, and sometimes it's frustrating when in an old photo there's "too much train, not enough railway".

All those locations with interesting details for modelling that never had that many trains, and the photographers still managed to get the timing wrong! Even when you want the trains they always seem to have the loco blocking interesting stock detail...

I always take my camera out and about when its Snowed, not just to take pics' of trains. A couple of 142's were seen whilst passing my nearest Station at Daisy Hill, Westhoughton, Lancs' sometime in the 1990's.

Living in Atherton I have become more than familiar with Pacers these many years. Here's a few snaps that I took on a day out last August:

142053 resting in the bay at Wigan North Western. One of the batch with larger, centrally-placed destination indicator.

405631698_005(Large).jpg.46cba9e90896a98c3d31c9690c9a468c.jpg

142030 had the head of a 'lash-up' of its fellows at Lime Street

1131337113_014(Large).jpg.35aacfe775c58f97453f308839f22061.jpg

142031 in the bay at Chester General under that odd disconnected piece of overall roof. Probably be heading for Piccadilly via the Cheshire Lines.

And finally 142037 is about to depart having deposited me back at a verdant Atherton station at the end of a grand day out. Apart, that is, from the seventy five minute wait at Bidston due to the cancellation of a Wrexham service which caused me to cancel the Wrexham - Shrewsbury and return leg of the day.

Apart from the Pacers I also photographed the following classes on the day:

150/2, 390, 319, 185, 350, 158, 507, 175, 221 and 66. A varied collection.

I think those large, sort of faint dot matrix-style indicators are on those fitted with the horrible 3+2 Merseyrail "sit up and beg" seats

Great to see the Atherton line so busy again David even if it is just DMU's and an occasional 66. Just wondering what will replace the 142's on this line? Seeing as how the platforms at a few stations are being lengthened, a few of the old HST sets would be great around here. Hard to think that this route was nearly closed in the '80's. Shame that Daisy Hill and Atherton have'nt got any wheelchair or pushchair access yet despite local campaigns to get them put in. Hag fold has a ramp but who'd leave a car parked around that estate all day:lol:

Wigan Wallgate. Early '90's.
