I couldn't guess as to numbers but Pacers turned up semi-regularly in multiple with 156s. IIRC, but don't take this as gospel, they were more likely for busy times to help handle the Leeds - Skipton commuter traffic. I don't think many people were sat in the Pacer north of Skipton; I did consider it once or twice for the large windows but always plumped for more comfortable seats instead. Back in 1994 I travelled the S&C on a 156/144 pairing. The pacer was (I seem to recall) 3-car 144017, whilst the Sprinter was 156486.

MarkC
Last Sunday I did Thornaby to Metrocentre and return by 144 set. One of our party is wheelchair-bound, and probably had the best set in the house, even though both sets we travelled in were refurbished. (I had the dubious pleasure of a Ravenglass to Lancaster trip on a 'bus seat' set a couple of years ago - that was grim...) The outbound set was a Nunthorpe - Carlisle diagram; the return was Carlisle to Middlesbrough. Not what they were intended for, I'm sure. They are OK on CWR, but on jointed track they are still appalling. As at least one member of the traincrew said - roll on 2020... Still, as others have said, they were 'of their time' - but that time is now up. 6

I travelled Rotherham to Leeds yesterday, out on a 144 and back on a 142. The ride quality wasn't bad, pretty smooth for most of the trip, apart from the curve at Moorthorpe onto the Doncaster-Leeds line, where they lurched about pretty badly. Mind you, a lot of that route is laid out for expresses running at 20-30 mph faster than the Pacers' max speed.

It's not a throwback to ATN, it was an early attempt at using solvent free paint. It looked just as grey as the ones done in propr paint until the carriage washing plants got at it, whereuppn it faded to blue almost at the first wash. Some 153s are similarly afflicted. 1

Wheatley
It fooled a lot of people to the extent that the engineer responsible for the re-livery programme got very very fed up of being asked about it ! It didn't fade gradually or in patches either - straight to one shade of blue. It On some of the repaired-but-not-yet-refurbished 150s there are very distinct grey patches now where seams have been repaired and repainted in grey enamel*. (*Or whatever real paint is these days) 1
Owd Bob
The Blue looking paint deffo' fooled me i thought it was the remains of this old livery at Wigan N.W. Station sometime in the '90's.
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted March 27, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 27, 2019 Sherry and I had a short trip on a Nodding Donkey the other day, from Paignton to Dawlish. It was packed from Torre with skoolkids. The ride isn’t that bad, and the seating no worse really than the 153 or 150 we might otherwise have had.

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted April 4, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 4, 2019 I had the great misfortune to have to travel in 144012 to York from Hull today. Leaking ceiling, smelly toilet, ironing board seats. All as before. No improvement in anyway. Heating set at 100F!! Couldn’t have been worse. Just simply hate that unit.
