Pace Yourself - photos of the final(?) Pacer countdown

Just to add to the above, that the Hudds-Castleford and the Hudds-Bradford Interchange via Halifax (previously the Hudds-Leeds via BDI) services, which were solid class 144 diagrams, are now in the hands of class 153s.

This would explain why the Sheffield to Leeds stoppers which were mainly 142s in the recent past are now mainly 144s.

Seeing the Pacers running in 6-car formation for disposal, did they ever run in 6-car formation in regular service?

One example I know, as I saw it, was the inaugural runs after the Bathgate line reopened for passenger traffic, when 3 Class 143s ran in formation between Edinburgh Waverley and Bathgate. But that may be considered a 'special' and wasn't typical, at least not on the Bathgate line.

6 and 8 car (3x2 or 4x2 units) class142s were a regular ECS move into Manchester Piccadilly most week days before 5pm most days until recently.

(..but often with a sprinkling of 150s replacing some 142s.)

They would then be split and sent out sequentially.

Here a pair arrive on Platform 1 at Manchester Piccadilly on the 8th of March 2019 at 16:04.

Then two more on Platform 2 have been left behind after the first available unit(s) have already departed.

.

.and here, 6 seconds later, is what a passing "normal" thought of the subject matter!

The passing "Normal" would be even less impressed when his train failed to turn up because his beloved Pacer had been sent for recycling!

Possibly, but post-Christmas cancellation levels appear to be at about (my estimate) a twentieth of pre-Christmas cancellation levels.

(It seems that staffing-levels/holidays/absenteeism was the main problem for TPE/Northern!)

I think I may have previously posted a photo of a 6-car class 143 formation. There was one regular 6-car working on the Paignton to Exmouth route to coincide with the afternoon school commute from Torre. I travelled on it once or twice, and it was well filled. 1 x 143 set was then booked to detach at Exeter St Davids each day to return it to a 4-car set.  I have not been on that route for a couple of years now, so don't know if it still is a 6-car working.

Here is the inwards working arriving at Paignton 17/6/2014

In Devon the class 143s are now supposed to be confined to the Exmouth - Paignton route, each one working with a class 150 set.

Here is a 150/143 combo at Exeter St Davids.

At Exeter St Davids 143617 is on the rear of the 09.57 Exmouth to Paignton service. 7/1/2010.

A  trip around Manchester today, for a football match, involving six different trains; 323 Newton for Hyde to Piccadilly; 185 Piccadilly to Victoria (Airport-Newcastle); 158/153 combo Victoria to Atherton (Leeds to Wigan N.W.). Return; Atherton to Salford Crescent, refurbished 3-car 158 (Wigan N.W to Leeds); Salford Crescent to Piccadilly 331 (Blackpool[?] to Hazel Grove) Piccadilly to Newton for Hyde, refurbished 323. In addition, 60091 Barry Needham at Ashburys aggregates terminal, and an unidentified 66 at the terminal in Salford.

A very interesting trip with lots of new lines, including the Ordsall Curve going, and the Windsor Link coming back, and some new traction; and certainly better than the football (3-0 defeat, and we were bobbins!). There were, however very few Pacers about, I think I only saw two workings, involving three units. Even the Rose Hills were in the hands of a 150/1, which I've never seen before.

No photo’s, unfortunately, and I was quite a way back in the queue at Beverley North LC, but the 10.15 to Bridlington from Hull and York was formed of a 3-car 144 today. The return to York, departing Bridlington at Noon would have been it’s return working. A very rare sight these days of course.

Looks like Rochdale-Clitheroe is a good bet for 142s these days.

Always seems to be at least two diagrams (I think there's 4 that trundle back and forth most of the day) working - usually with a 150

I have'nt seen any 142's in the Wigan - Bolton & Wigan - Manch' area for nearly a month now.

A 150/142 combination turned up at Salford Central on my way home, going via Manchester, to Rochdale

Sign of the times - the first Sheffield-Leeds via Moorthorpe stopping service yesterday (Sunday) was a 195, here at Rotherham. Luxury! Those headlights are blindingly bright from the platform.

But normal service resumed on my way back south in the afternoon, with a 144.

Is that really a Northern train? A) it's running and B) it's on time!!

plus C) it was warm and D) everyone got a seat.

Obviously everything's hunky-dory in the former People's Republic. It even stopped raining later on.

It was the less-well maintained 142s where you could see rain leaking inside - the rain in the pacer train stays mainly outside the train. Whatever the faults of the new ones, I don't think they leak.

From observations, it appears that the 10:35 and 16:35 services from Kirkby to Manchester Victoria (11:01 and 17:01 from Wigan Wallgate) are formed of a 142 and a 150 on Saturdays only. I have noticed that on weekdays it is a single 150.

The 15:35 weekdays from Kirkby to Manchester Victoria, (16:01 from Wigan Wallgate), seems to usually be a 142 coupled to a 150 or a 156. It was a 142 and 150/1 today. Can anyone confirm if this is the same train that forms the earlier 09:35 from Kirkby to Manchester Victoria?

I've only been one 1 class 195 so far, it was standing room only.

I ended up standing just inside the door, there was that much condensation on the inside of the glass that I couldn't see out !!

Cheers,

Phil.

Leaving Sheffield station today on a 144 to Woodhouse all the other trains I could see were 144s! (although I think there was a 222 hidden behind)

No photos I’m afraid, but to make up here’s one from a strike day, 28th April 2017
