RMweb Premium uax6 Posted January 14, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 14, 2020 The Chasewater railway has taken delivery of its pacer 142030... so we get to experince basic trains for a bit longer. One hopes that they have also got a shed load of spares (and that the body is good on this one!) Andy G 2

But as others keep saying its better to stand on a new train (if you can actually get on it) than get a seat on a Pacer!
RMweb Gold 4630 Posted January 15, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 15, 2020 There’s comment on another forum suggesting that a Northern internal communications document has mentioned a “Pacer farewell tour later this year”. No further information than that at the moment. 1

Will it get as far as the 308 farewell railtour, as that was quietly forgot about as there was a Driver shortage at the time and Arriva (still Cowie group then) did not want to upset West Yorkshire Council & PTE running it and cancelling service trains at the same time! The next month or so could be interesting depending on which alternative the DfT decides for Northern; either a tightly specified management contract for Arriva, or ‘Directly Operated Railways’ takes over lock, stock and barrel. And then there’s the rumour about splitting the operating structure back to east and west of the Pennines - turning back the railway clock 20 years. With all that to contend with I think a ‘Pacer Farewell Tour’ run by anyone will be fairly well down the list of priorities. You could well be proved right in your analogy with the 308 farewell railtour.

Popular Post eastwestdivide
Looking on the bright side, some Pacer photos in the dwindling light at the disused Brightside station between Sheffield and Meadowhall, while waiting for a railtour. Beware of the buddleia: Shelter and lamp posts in faded SYPTE (?) blue: Two for the price of one. Forgemasters on the left, Sheffield city centre in the distance, the Peak District rising in the far distance: The refurbished 144012. While accessibility is one of the reasons for the demise of the Pacers, Brightside has accessibility problems of its own: Another pair of 144s in the distance at Meadowhall, and a real life bus on the bridge:

Jack Mc
A few pictures from today, 23/1/20 Barnsley - 144019 working the Sheffield to Huddersfield service 144023 working the Sheffield to Huddersfield service 144012 working the Leeds to Sheffield local service. Seen first in Barnsley then at Elsecar. Took a couple of interior shots to show the differences between this and the rest of the class. Jack Mc
Bit random this I know, but 144021 has just passed Elsecar at speed. A little curious to what working this was I have checked RTT and found it to be ' 5B58 1435 Sheffield to Huddersfield '. ECS, so obviously not stopping anywhere along the route. Never previously noticed this as a working before, does anybody know if it is a one off or a regular working? Edit - just looked into it and the passenger service at that time was cancelled. Pandora
I was out today enjoying some "bashing" of the 144s out of Sheffield, I'm pleased that some of the class will enter preservation, and I hope that the traditional skills of the coach builders will be employed to modify the utility interiors to give an ambience of say a BR mark 1 coach which would be in keeoing with our heritage railways Edited January 24, 2020 by Pandora 1

pacerfan
The Class 142 withdrawals seem to be having a negative affect on services: Today, only four 142s were in service and the 10:35am Kirkby to Manchester Victoria was short formed with a single 150/2. Usually on a Saturday it is a 150 and 142. There were quite a lot of cancellations today. Among them were:- The 11:55 Manchester Vic to Wigan Wallgate (apparently due to 'more trains than usual undergoing repair'). The 18:00 Stalybridge to Manchester Vic. The 18:26 Manchester Vic to Kirkby (apparently due to 'problems with lineside equipment'). The 20:10 Wigan Wallgate to Blackburn. All of the Southport services that I saw were only two carriages and very full.
runs as required
Shouldn't it have been the ghost of a Leyland National posed on the bridge in Jack Mc's post ? Jack Mc
28/01/20 Destined to preserved at the GCR(N), 144003 is seen at Barnsley working a Sheffield - Leeds service. I imagine it won't have the volume of passengers use it in preservation as it did on this service, standing down the corridors as usual on the peak time services. Seen alongside 195001. Not the best photo as the 195 had just started moving and the camera refocused as the picture was taken. Also nice to hear that 144004 has a future at the Aln Valley Railway.
