To accompany the bike rack pics from earlier in the thread:

Here are the bike "slots" on a 144 from yesterday, with car-type seatbelt visible in the 2nd photo:

Yes, and from only a couple of days ago.

For clarity, the text about a 142 comes from a much earlier post which I quoted for easy comparison, and it's embedded that text but not the pics in this post

Apparently the Exeter pacer fleet is now "self isolating", due to train formations being shortened to match lower demand.

Meldon Quarry might be good for a one-way trip for permanent self-isolation of that fleet? Over the weak viaduct ...

As this may well turn out to be my last visit to Doncaster before the class 144s are withdrawn, here's the final one, a B&W of 144010 waiting to depart from platform 4 with 12.03 Doncaster to Sheffield.

Another delve through the archives produced Northern Rail 144020 in WYPTE Metro livery at Leeds on 18th November 2005.

I was having a thought earlier, not the best thing to do really as it makes my brain hurt.  I was trying to work out the geographical areas the Class 141/142/143 and 144 started when were introduced and where their now finishing their miles.

The Class 141’s were basically Leeds based from start to finish.
The Class 142’s are a bit more complicated as most were split between Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Carlisle and anywhere in between though some started in Devon and Cornwall but got banished up north.  Some later returned to the south west in the 2000’s but later returned back up north.  The Welsh Valleys lines got quite a few but again, most stayed in the north.

The Class 143’s started in the Newcastle and north east area but later moved down south and the fleet have remained down there since and split between Wessex Trains, FGW, GWR and Arriva Trains Wales.

The Class 144’s, like the Class 141’s have lived a more mundane life as they’ve stayed in the Leeds area and not strayed very far.

Have I more or less got this right or did they travel a lot further?

As far as I remember  the 144's were bought and paid for by West Yorks Metro along with some 155's and they had a mainly red Metro livery. At privatisation they got handed to one of the leasing companies.the 155's that Metro owned remained in West Yorks and never got converted to 153's. Metro also paid for the centre cars in the 144's. Whether West Yorks ratepayers ever got reimbursed I don't know.

From memory the West Yorks sets had two additional door control panels in the centre of the set, this aided on busy trains.

The 144 centre cars ended up owned by a different leasing company and had a different overhaul schedule and were done at different works!

A 144 in Blackpool was quite a rare event.

Yet another Lancashire seaside town saw (Morecambe) them every day

Because the Leeds, Morecambe route was a Leeds based working.  The Metro 155's used to get to Blackpool from York.

From memory the 143's went to Bathgate for the opening week.

Meanwhile the 144's have done the below-

For a spell in the 90's they used a three car on the Whitby for the school service.

Also visited Heaton depot for exams rather Neville Hill and some now stored there.

Not sure  how often they worked Cleethorpes to Barnetby but the set that was at Cleethorpes for driver training was used on one service.

Agreed.

A rare event for a 144 was Skipton-Hellifield-Blackburn - Copy Pit - Leeds. This was because of flooding in the Aire Valley to get the units back to Leeds for servicing.

I think the move was 1x142 and 2x144

Only when they reached Blackburn, did someone in control say that 14X were banned on the Clitheroe-Blackburn section.

"Too late" was the reply................................... to many red faces.

Nobody seems to know the reason why, as 142s were allowed on the line as they started to appear in 2014-ish. Absolutely nothing to to with track circuits, curves or gradients. The line was used for testing 142s when they were new! It was simply in the sectional appendix not to use them beyond Blackburn.

So much so, that if one was diagrammed from Manchester, it would be turned back at Blackburn and exchange passengers with the 150 coming in from Clitheroe. The 150, would, in turn, head back towards Clitheroe.

The most plausible story seems to be that the local line user association had a deal in place to ban them for use when the Clitheroe service was restored in 1994. The ban was relaxed about 2014 when I guess that the original agreement "to ban them" would have already seen them scrapped.

I am still trying to find out the reason for the ban - even Man Vic drivers don't know why.
