Three are running as 11 car sets and one is a 9 car formation, which is currently out of action at the moment awaiting a possible repaint into flowing silk colours.

 

At some point in time I will also be buying 4 powered driving unit chassis's too as part of project to add more pulling power when running as prototypical sized formations

I felt the layout definitely needed a modern supermarket situated in a location where in suburbs start and this resulted in the construction of a low relief Sainsbury's Supermarket constructed from plastikard, card and a plastic wills kit. It certainly has the look and feel I was after and fits into this part of the layout nicely.

 

Interior lighting has been added in the entrance and exterior lighting above and below the main supermarket sign will be installed at a later date as well

Have you made the U coach? (the one with the pantograph well, with no pantograph!!)

Hi everyone,

 

Still here keeping safe and well , hope you are all not missing work too much (I know I'm not). My Modelling Mojo has been coming and going over the last three months so progress on the layout has been off-on a bit, however at least with most physical model shops now reopening supplies should be easier and cheaper to get hold off.

 

A layout update is coming very soon, but for now I have a small Fleet/Workbench Projects update to show you instead :

Fresh from the workbench is one of my Bachmann Class 90's, 90044 which I rebranded and renumbered from the factory released Model of 90037 last year. As you see it has had medium weathering effects applied using a mixture of aerosol spray paints and powders. The 044 numbers on the yellow ends have also been replaced with smaller ones as the originals looked slightly oversized.

 

For photographic purposes this photo was taken on my exhibition layout, New Mere which I finished just before I started work on Harriton, I will probably create a thread for this layout to sometime in the future although it is very much complete

I was after a finiished result similiar to that of Wratting Road's example of this Loco featured on Youtube and I think it has come out looking fairly decent considering I am relatively new to weathering/airbrushing. Unfortunately it wasn't  a total success due to the fact that when I rubbing on powder on the other side I managed to damage the Freightliner red triangle logo, but this is something that will be easily rectified when I get round to ordering a replacement.

 

The other Freightliner Loco I have, 90042 in Powerhaul Livery will receive light weathering as well sometime in the future whilst plan to send my other two Class 90's to be resprayed into DB Red and EWS Liveries by Ben's Respray's as soon as funds allow it.

Fleet Update - Definitely hasn't been quiet on the Loco front either, four new Loco's have now joined the Fleet over the last three months:

Hornby Class 56, 56087 in Colas Rail, so happy to finally have this one in my fleet after having it evade me countless times on a certain online auction website, (name of which I don't even want to mention in regards to this particular model). This is the DCC Ready version and it will be receiving a chip at some point in time followed by a coat of weathering

Heljan's new released retooled Class 33, 33029 in WCRC Livery. Another one I am delighted to have my fleet having been after the older tooling in this livery for a while.

Two very lucky finds back in April were these two 47's that have been resprayed into Locomotive Services Ltd Class 47's, 47810/D1924 'Crewe Diesel Depot' and 47805/D1935 'Roger A Hoskins' in BR Green Livery with 57 roof grills and long range fuel tanks.

Hi all,

 

After a 9 month long hiatus on here I can confirm I am still here and keeping out of trouble! I am now finally putting together an update on the admittedly off and on progress of the layout and workbench projects over this period

 

Just want to briefly explain why there has been such a large gap in updates, before the end of the last long national lockdown, work on the layout came to an abrupt halt due to being called back to work in July at short notice, this also coincided with my DCC controller deciding to pack up on me!

 

This could not have come at a worse time as I was saving money at the time to move house in October and change Jobs as part of the plan for the next stage of my life after this pandemic is brought under control, meaning that a significant amount of work on the layout over July to October period had to be put on hold along with any purchases of new Loco's and Rolling Stock.

 

Basically my mind and my money has been on other things and I sadly lost interest in Railway Modelling, this pandemic also hasn't helped either as since then we now find ourselves in Lockdown number 3 and as I live away from home it's going to be at least a month until any real work on the layout can begin again.

 

However on a more postive note that has not stopped me planning what happens next, I plan to launch a Youtube Channel for the Layout soon as I feel its long overdue along with the  purchase of a new controller! I have lots of exciting projects and developments in store for the layout when things get back to normal

 

Onwards and upwards towards better times!

Okay folks here we go, this part of the update is going to be covering where I was back in June/July just before most work on the layout ceased.

 

I decided focus to attention developing the scenery on the mostly ignored bottom right hand corner section of the layout just before the fiddle yard, which also features a lift- out section. The idea for this area was always that this would be a canal scene sandwiched inbetween a raised surbuban scene and raised hillside with end goal being a look of man-made structures built around natural terain rather than the opposite and the impression the outskirts of a town giving way to open hills, woodland and countryside.

Here is a view of the scene looking towards the subarb scene on approach into the station, the tunnel mouths on both sides will be intregrated into walling with mock medieval Turrets as this particular scene is going be to loosely based on the famous bridge next to Conwy Castle on the iconic Cambrian Line in North Wales

This is view of the otherside of the layout heading into the fiddle yard, the tunnel portal is yet to be installed, however I am very happy with how this area is looking at the moment. I settled on a rugged look for the hillside as I want this to look like a ruined castle where woodland has taken over rather than a intact Castle on a hill to add more interest. I have to hold my hands up, Everard Junction's video on seafroam trees did provide a lot of inspiration and helpful skills and tips that I look forward to using when building up this scene.

Now time for the piece de resistance.... the canal scene. Definitely had a lot of fun planning this, after a lot of time spent studying canals/river in Birmingham, Bath, Cambridge and Berkshire I got to work on the bridge which would carry the railway over the canal/river.  This is the structure I created with a mixture of plastikard and mounting board finished in a variety of thinned out enamels/ acrylics. Really happy with how it looks, it most certaintly has the look and character of what I was trying to achieve.

Looking over the bridge to where the backscene will be added at some point. Since this photo was taken, towpaths and scatter have since been added. Grass and foiliage to follow very soon with addition of realistic water and more finer details!

Time for an update on a Workbench project that has been ongoing since the start of last year.

 

One thing about modelling a WCML based Layout that has always appealed to me is the variety of traction that you see in operation any given time or location both diesel and electric.

As Harriton is supposed to be situated close to Crewe, one class of EMU that you would definitely see operating on services to Liverpool is the 4 car Class 319, originally built by BREL between 1987-90 for use on Thameslink services in the London and South East area, but since 2016 have been given a new lease of life by Northern on services in the North West with some being converted into class 769 flexes.

None of the mainstream manufacturers have produced a 00 Gauge RTR Model of the 319 yet, although Graham Farish are releasing an N Gauge Model (Don't really understand the logic in that) meaning that the only choice for 00 Gauge Modellers at the moment is the kit made by Bratchell Models, which I have been making up since February of last year.

I won't go into too much detail about building the kit as I'm aware somebody else has already covered this kit in great detail. Here are a couple of pictures of the Unit from last February after I had finished constructing it, the process was fairly easy and straightforward, however I did have to scratchbuild some underframe components, block out the toilet window and drill holes in the cab sections to fit separate wipac pieces in order to accommodate the installation of directional lighting to make the kit a closer match for my requirements

For the motor, I decided to opt for a standard post-2014 Bachmann Class 150 Chassis for the two centre cars and two dummy's for the two driving units given the similarities in size and proportion. I had to file down the metal block on the motor chassis and alter the size of some of the window seats, but the end result is a snug fit with the Bratchell 319 Bodies and a reliable DCC compatible motor that leaves the door open for fitting sound in the future if desired.

Fast forward to June, this month saw the conclusion of the application of Arriva Northern Livery and transfers with the Unit gaining the running number of 319382. Really pleased with the application and finish, I think the colours used are a very close match to the pictures I studied prior to applying the paints to the carriage bodies. The only oversight on my part was choosing to use transfers for the cantrail rather simply just painting it on as I've had a lot of trouble with sections of them lifting off despite being held in place by varnish, If I get any more issues I will probably resort to painting cantrail back on and not reattach the transfers.

 

That aside the process has been a success, the only thing left to do now is to add pick ups and fit directional lighting in the two driving units and after that it is hoped the unit can then enter service on the layout.

Autumn/ Winter as previously mentioned were a lot quieter in terms of work on the layout itself, but I did get round to doing a few more odd jobs on the almost complete station that I had been putting off, one of which was building a fence and gate barriers kit from scale model scenery for the station platform ends to stop lineside trespassers along with some red planters, a common sight at many stations on the WCML.

Hi all,

 

Well...I have the mother of all updates here for you all  (Yes I have to warn you that this is going to be another long one). Work on layout has finally recommenced  and is very much in full swing following an almost non-stop work session during my birthday week at the end of May/start of June I have literally not been able to stop.

 

My focus has largely been on finishing work certain sections on layout and treating each section as a separate layout rather doing a bit here a bit there and everywhere with nothing really getting completed.

 

This is update again is probably going to be posted in different parts, but I'll my best to keep it as concise and easy to follow as possible. Bearing that in my mind let's get this show on the road...

 

Workbench: Whilst it's fair to say the emphasis has been mostly on advancing the layout further ahead, nevertheless I have decided to embark on one of my biggest and ambitious projects to date, a full repaint of my 9 car Pendolino into Virgin Flowing Silk Livery! This is something I've been thinking of doing for a while now, while Harriton is based in the not too distant past sometime around the 2016-19 Virgin Trains period, the idea is bring the layout as close to the present day as possible.

As far as my project is concerned, I expect the livery application to be fairly straightforward while I await the arrival of the vinyls that I have commissioned to arrive. As well as the receiving a new livery this Unit along with my other 3 Pendolino's over time will be receiving a second driving car to improve pulling power when running as 9 and 11 car formations

Here we picture of all the carriage bodies after paint removal and just after the second coat of primer. After the IPA removed all the paint it, feels a bit strange seeing a Hornby Pendolino like this I must say, definitely looking forward to seeing what the finished result will look like.

Now moving on to work on the layout itself, Platforms 3 and 4 have undergone a slight transformation, I have decided to remove the canopy on these platforms as I felt for a while now that having a canopy on the two middle platforms as you look across hid a lot of the station from view and trains coming and going. The station is now much more open, it's easier to see trains arriving and departing and will most certaintly make life easier when it come to installing OHLE Equipment eventually.

I've also replaced the all Ten Commandments seating on all the platforms with seats that bare a strong resemblance to the new grey/metallic silver anti-vandal seats with armrests appearing at an ever increasing amount of stations across the country

Now we move on to the Subarbs Scene, which has shot forward leaps and bounds compared to where it was last time it was featured on this thread. The idea for this scene was always going to be Subarbs becoming woodland and countryside, I'm really pleased with how it looks, it's very close to what I had pictured in my mind. I really had a lot of fun building up this scene using a wide variety of foilage, grass, scatter and seafroam trees and other materials. Not 100% finished yet, I still have to add on road markings, lamposts and a few other things, but the lion's share of the work is done here.

A view here of where the scene borders with the tunnel mouths, for now I have resisted the temptation to add any more foilage in this area as I plan to repaint and weather the tunnel portals, however once this is completed, it should look a bit more normal and natural

Morning all,

 

Thought that was it? No there's more!

 

A backscene now runs across pretty much nearly all of layout now. Work on the scenery has not just been isolated to the subarb scene it has extended all the way over the canal/river and castle ruins as well.

 

Still a bit of a way to go, I haven't decided what I'm going to do with tunnel portals and the adjoining  wall yet, but I have got something along the lines of Conwy Castle in North Wales in my mind at the moment whether or not I turn to a kit or decided to scratchbuild what I'm after still remains to be seen.

 

Overall I'm very happy with how this area looks, I still need to add realistic water to the canal which will be a first for me, but that's a job for another day!

Work on the Pendo is really moving forward now...

 

All the main elements of the basic livery, bar the flowing silk blanket on the two driving units which will be applied via transfer are now complete. Just need to do a bit of touching up where the paint has bled through some of the masking around the doors and on the roof and after that I can then apply the cantrail along with a few other details before the transfers can then be applied!
