Im following the build of this on the Garratmaker youtube, excellent quality of build and research. The Transandine railway is in Chile, the line was metre gauge and 154 miles long with sections of ABT rack up to 1:12 gradient. 2 of the meyers survive, 1 in the old loco shed at Los Andes in Chile and the other in the Mendoza railway museum, Argentina. i'll try to link each video here after each time they are posted

yes, great beasts which i too wish to model one day but of course in a much smaller scale.

talking of scale, compare it with the men in this one1780473227_meyerkitsonFCTCtransandine43.jpg.126e0f7a428e9c4d11d4ccd76c03ab52.jpg

he has posted a short video saying that this meyer series will finish by christmas and then next year will be another about a south african garratt whuich he is already nearly finished

these are photos from his facebook. he has built 2 transandine meyers, 1 with extra cylinders and 1 without.

info about he extra cylinders

these 3 locos werent designed by kitson but a consultant engineer hired by the railway and then accepted by Kitson. the railway wanted a big powerful loco with rack to pull the heavy trains up 1 in 12 and round tight curves. Mr Abt of the ABT rack system (which the railway used) was also consulted and he said it was imposible. at least on a rigid chassis. the engineer came up with a meyer, 8 coupled front bogie adhesion only and a rear bogie with 2 rack axles carried by 6 un powered wheels. The railway was un happy with the loco's possible lack of ability on the rack with it only being fitted to the rear bogie and requested an additional rack axle to the front bogie. these extra 2 cylinders put un necassery drain on the boiler that it wasnt designed to be able to do and the extra weight was damaging the track, the extra cylinders were removed in 1911. which afterwards these and their 6 argentine sister did good reliable service for about 60 years
