RMweb Premium OnTheBranchline Posted March 3, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 3, 2019 I understand that at major stations on the GWR, the banker/pilot would be waiting to be attached at the front/back of the train. Are there any examples of where the banker wouldn't necessarily be waiting at the station but at a signal & signalbox or near a water tower on a siding? Thank you in advance. dpgibbons
At Weymouth (GWR/SR), trains requiring assistance pulled up at Weymouth Junction, a short distance outside the terminus, to allow the banker to buffer up uncoupled to the rear of the train. Bankers then dropped off at the top of the climb at Bincombe signal box where a crossover allowed them to work right line back to Weymouth. Conversely at Bournemouth West terminus, the pilot engine would draw in the coaches to the platform and then wait at the buffers to assist as far as the platform ends. RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted March 4, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 4, 2019 Brewham was the one that immediately comes to mind although from the 1930s a halt (Strap lane Halt) was opened on the further side of the road overbridge which was behind the stop blocks of the bank engine siding). Dainton Tunnel is of course a prime example although the engines were coming off to go back although Rattery would be ok. Rattery and Brewham had similar layouts - a crossover and a siding - simple as that.
RMweb Premium OnTheBranchline Posted March 7, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 7, 2019 Thank you for the responses. Does anyone have any pictures of GWR/WR bankers prepared and waiting, or would anyone be suggest where I would be able to find some?
