My first module in Bonsai RhB in Nm9

Inspired by Paul's Bonsai RhB thread

I've started working on my own interpretation of a module - its compatible with, but not strictly to Paul's spec, and is really just a test plank for something bigger (MUCH bigger).

You will have seen these first photos on Paul's thread, but just to keep it in one place.

These are my own first attempt at an asymmetric profile using Paul's spec, but I found it a little narrow for my liking, so I've ended up with a slightly wider footprint.

This has been the state of play for a couple of months, an approximate landform in polystyrene sheet held together witha couple of skewers, but I felt I really ought to progress a bit, so out with the hot glue gun to bond them all together,IMG_20190310_134519.jpg.2bd37355b2550be94d4f56b018a1d219.jpgIMG_20190310_134509.jpg.ba835713398023f96ac3f077e80f1e7b.jpgIMG_20190310_134505.jpg.7b7619d10c36049339e5cf5a482d278b.jpg

And once I was happy with the form, a coat of plaster bandage - its really difficult to tame the inner perfectionist, and not smooth everything out - there was a real risk it could have ended up as a badly iced wedding cake.

I didn't have any grey primer in the house so I took advantage of a pot I knew was in store at my club to put a quick coat of grey on, alas the colour was completely wrong

At least it gave a feel for the shape I've achieved.

The colour 'in the flesh' is completely different, although yes, I'm thinking of moving everything to a shade lighter, so almost none of the darkest on show except right in the depths of the nooks and crannies, and more of the palest colour currently only used as the highlights.

I'm waiting until I have daylight at the weekend to have a second go.

You could try dry brushing or using a sponge with matt white to get a tonal difference - just skimming the surface and leaving the crevices dark. You can also achieve a lot with a wash rather than paint.

Dry brushing with white or off white paint will define these rocks nicely highlighting the surface areas while leaving the crevices darker.  It's surprising how much the white fades back after applying.   For extra interest you could also dry brush on a couple of shades of brown.

Cheers ... Alan

Nice start Jon, yes I used a light grey with dilute washes of darker colours and browns.

Watch your clearances for masts as it’s pretty tight in the cutting ;)

When you say something much bigger what height are you defining track at and what control system?

Only thinking we could do adapter modules :)

I actually gave it a quick and dirty all over coat in the left most pot, then whilst it was all wet stippled in the next 3 with the palest reserved for the 'highlights' along with just a tiny amount of the ochre. Its actually a much more subbtle colour than the photo shows, hence the need for some daylight to have another look at the colour balance.

Much bigger? Landwasser viaduct from tunnel to tunnel at full scale height and radius - but I can't really start on that until I've moved house, and since I haven't actually started viewing properties yet.,..  its a little way off. Probably as a roundy-roundy with a hidden passing loop and automatic train control - I'm not a great enthusiast of actually operating. Track and control hasn't been given a lot of thought - the radius of that test board was set to match one of the Kato standard radii, but I've actually used a random length of Peco flex that hasn't been fastened down yet, so there is still time to change.

I seem to have bid on an n-gauge church on ebay that is very similar in shape to the one near the fields above Bergun - I'm not quite sure what made me think that was a good idea...

I've populated the layout with a few trees - all are a bit too vivid at the moment, but none are fixed down, so they will come back out and get sprayed a darker (or a range of darker) greens, before final installation.

My Glacier Express passengers arn't going to get to see much, they spend most of the journey in cutting or screened behind trees!

In some places that's very accurate...

  • 2 months later...

Prompted by this weekends (now cancelled) appearance at Global rail I've spent a few weeks working up a second module, and had hoped to show it as a work in progress - nevermind it does now mean that the two modules can be stacked in storage and protect each other.

Only the upper section of module 2 has had Modroc treatment

Left then right

or right then left

Or with my 'birdbox' neutralising section in between

bonsai2003.jpg

The trick is getting the landforms in sync, so that there isn't an interference fit anywhere

Now we just need an alternative first get together.

Then 3 days to myself booked into the hotel Grischuna on the platform at Filisur! https://www.schmalspurbahn.ch/filisur/webcam/  :locomotive:

Love that place, regards to Ann. Tip - there is a bigger choice of dishes on their German menu than the English menu! Apparently there is an exhibition in a shop in Filisur about the proposed “Landwasser Project”. It involves building a historic railway centre and sheds for historic stock at Surava. A shuttle train between Filisur, Alvaneu and Surava. Also turning the area beneath the Landwasser Viaduct into a tourist area. Might be worth a visit if you had time.
