Wolverhampton West Park - A run down city terminus

Finally got round to a little more ballasting this evening. Needs the once over with the hoover, but that doesn’t stop Thirlestaine Hall simmering away in platform 3 with a stopping service for Worcester Shrub Hill.

Not strictly Wolverhampton West Park related, but earlier this year i spent some time in Sri Lanka and came across this wonderful old signal box at Kandy station along with some cracking semaphores. Signalman let me have a nose around too...

I managed to get a couple of hours over the weekend dedicated to West Park. Ballasting work continues, i’m fairly pleased with how the mixture of chinchilla dust and 2mm ballast is looking, albeit unpainted at this stage. I tested a small section with a layer of sleeper grime as a base coat, although the coating will only be this thick at the platform ends where the grime was at it’s worth. Elsewhere some of the ballast colours will be allowed to shine through. Also quite pleased with how the clay looks for those grimy platform ends, but needs colour and texture too.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks to Martin at Model Railway Solutions I finally got the laser cut back scene boards fixed in place.

The high backscenes are designed to give an air of urban landscape aided by high retaining walls. I’ve also got an illustrator friend who’s hopefully going to whip up a suitably murky Wolverhampton industrial scene for the background.

Hopefully tomorrow’s “modelling Sunday” will be productive.

I noticed a reflection of the lights of the railcar on the platform, has there been a shower so the platform is wet?

Totally accidental I’m afraid. Sadly the last coat of weathering enamel dried with a slight sheen (probs due to my not mixing it well enough), but it’s kinda resulted in a nice effect. Only really shows up with the class 122 with lights on runs past.

Hi

I like it....the 'old debate' around here continues......!

Have lived here in Wombourne for 53 years.....and it still gets the blood flowing in many quarters when Wombourne is now seen.....without an 'e'....?

However back in GWR days the station was known in GWR timetables and shown on route maps without the 'e'....

Brilliant stuff...regards always

Thanks Bob - to be honest I really wasn’t sure regarding the ‘e’. Some research said with and other sources without. Good to get confirmation from a local. Any ideas why they dropped the ‘e’?

Ballasting is now pretty much complete on the station section. The warehouse sidings are still left to do, although I’m not totally sure what sort of finish I’m going for there yet so that last section might have to wait a while. On to airbrushing the ballast and track next. Hopefully I’ll get some piccies sorted tomoz eve.

in the mean time here’s a semi fast service to Leamington Spa leaving platform 3.

Hi...

It has always been a 'hot potato' concerning the 'added e'.......

Have lived in the area (Wall Heath born and then Bobbington (Heathton) near Claverley for 7 years in early childhood) and Wombourne since 1967 and have only known it with the added 'e'...but I think that this was a post war thing as the village grew....so it was originally without an 'e' hence the station running in boards and timetables stating Wombourn,,,,,there was chatter that it was changed to avoid possible postal confusion (prior to post code introductions) with Woburn, just as in the case of during the last war  nearby RAF Bobbington Airfield was altered to Halfpenny Green (the smaller adjoining hamlet).....

There was even a plan (and the earthwork triangle is still visible), just past Crossing Cottage on Eardington Bank on the SVR to join both lines, requiring another Severn river crossing to get the Halfpenny Green and a Wombourn connection, the local Cradley Heath MRC has a layout depicting a theoretical Halfpenny Green!

Such debate over a letter eh?

Regards

Bob

Thanks, Bob. Such a debate indeed!

To be honest, i wasn’t aware of the proposed line, which could provide another potential service into West Park. The CH MRC website has some very helpful links on it.

After getting the airbrush out this evening to finish the track weathering, i instead ended up lathering on a final layer of ballast bond. I found the airbrush kept disturbing supposedly glued down ballast (obviously not). Hopefully all set up for track weathering one evening this week, after which i must get on with the station building and retaining walls, which should really help the layout scenery start to take shape.
