Popular Post turtlebah Posted October 27, 2019 Author Popular Post Share Posted October 27, 2019 Now the track weathering is pretty much complete, other than a bit of rust powder to the rail sides and some black patches where locos stand in the platform roads, i thought it was time to get on with the buildings around the station. To start with i wanted to get the canopy up to try and bring the picture to life and to gauge various heights surrounding it. The roof and supports are a mish mash of Peco & Dapol canopy kits with fair bit of plasticard added to bring it all together. Defo needs some tidying up and the structure sides and roof covering needs to be completed, but the basic structure looks pretty good for now. A Standard class 5 waits in platform 2 with a stopper to Leamington Spa, whilst the Class 121 pauses before returning to Stourbridge via Wombourn. 26 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Due to a new addition to the family born 8 weeks ago, modelling time has most definitely taken a back seat. I did manage to get a couple of shots today of small progress. A standard class 5 waits to depart with an all stations stopper to Shrewsbury whilst a Hall waits for the signal to return to shed after bringing in a cross country service from Banbury. Ive started work on the high retaining platform wall in the background, which will hopefully give the impression of a terminus built into a steep urban/industrial cutting. I’ve got a couple of weeks off over Christmas and hope to squeeze in an afternoon of modelling whilst the little one is napping. We’ll see though... A busy morning at Wolverhampton West Park 6965 Thirlestaine Hall is ready for departure with a semi fast to Shrewsbuy, whilst an 8F awaits a clear road with a short engineers train stabled overnight in the old warehouse sidings at West Park. Llanfair Grange enters platform 2 with a cross country service from Oxford. A 122 waits in the centre road before it’s next trip along the branch to Wombourn. Another Hall class draws into platform 3 with the 2.12pm semi-fast from Hereford. This time a standard class 5 is at the head of a Shrewsbury service, whilst the class 122 waits in platform 2 with the Wombourn branch service for Brettell Lane. The parcel vans are stored in the centre road ready for the evening parcels to Snow Hill. Other station shots Llanfair Grange with the cross-country service from Oxford via Worcester. The fiddle yard bridge supports are being erected (rather slowly). Jubilee Class 45659, Drake, is ready to leave with a train for Shrewsbury. I did manage to finally tidy and sort the train room so I’m kind of prepared to crack on with the next phase. I’ve also started to install the lovely signals made by Mark Seward, which hopefully I’ll have fully working in the next couple of weeks. This is to avoid a rough shunt when buffering up and possible injury to passengers boarding or standing in the train. Sorry for being a bit pedantic. the driver obviously wasn’t concentrating for this particular movement. That would be my shoddy point construction! First time id ever built my own turnouts so we had a few teething problems, particularly with the crossover. I think the issue is the point has risen up and is slightly higher than the track afterwards, which causes a bit of a wobble. Also the crossover nose gauging is a little tight. The particular point in question was the first half decent one I managed to get down, subsequent points are of much better quality. I knew at the time I should redo it, but wanted to crack on with other aspects of the layout. Thanks for the tender wheel tip though - It may well be adding to the problem. I’ve added a bit of extra weight to some tenders of other locomotives, which seems to help with negotiating the fine scale track and turnouts, especially the Hornby locos. turtlebah Posted March 31, 2020 Author Share Posted March 31, 2020 Firstly, i hope everyone who might stumble across this thread is fit and healthy and managing to cope ok with social distancing during these crazy times. I think at moments like this our hobby (and RM Web) can be a very welcome distraction for many, providing some much needed relief from the news and outside world. We all need an escape and that is never more applicable than now. Unfortunately for me, the combination of working from home and having a 5 month old daughter means that it’s difficult to sneak in a couple of hours of modelling (i must try harder here). With a couple of ‘days off’ next week i hope to address that. Whilst progress on Wolverhampton West Park has been slow, it hasn’t stopped me playing trains from time to time so please see the latest video below. Massive thanks to Mark Seward for the amazing signal work and well worth every penny - the calling-on arms look great. Still got to get them wired up, but the signal wiring is a job for another day. With lockdown allowing for more model railway evenings I’m hoping to get all the scenery and buildings mocked up in styrofoam over the Easter Weekend. turtlebah Posted April 10, 2020 Author Share Posted April 10, 2020 (edited) I’ve started to make good progress on mocking up the structures in foam. The overall aim is firstly to check the measurements before getting the basic shells laser cut in MDF and then finally adding details and plasticard for texture. A mock up of the imposing Waterloo Road bridge set into the retaining wall (that will be complete with arches). A very basic structure just to get the measurements sorted. The Great Western Hotel on Platform 1. Still a bit of work to do to get the measurements correct. The detail will be loosely based on Wolverhampton Low Level i.e. blue brick with cornerstone and stone lintels.
