"New B17" Project Proposed

RANGERS

Recommended Posts

A former colleague called in a week or two back and tells me there's a project to build another B17 on the go. Anyone heard anything of this?

So many key words are missing, it is hard to respond to this without fuller info.....

A project to build another B17?

I am not aware there is a B17 preserved already unless you are referring to a model?

In which case, would this be a Hornby replacement?

Or is this a conversation where you know one of your colleages has built a model and is planning another?

Sorry if it's not clear, another B17 as in one additional to those which were built, none of which survive of course. The project apparently has roots at Barrow Hill and is very much in it's early stages. I understand a number of suppliers and specialists who were involved in Tornado have already been approached and the funding plan is sound, they just need to make it work to raise the cash to turn it into reality. Project timescale is 10 years.

I read in one of the Steam Railway/Heritage mags (don't remember which, it was a while ago) that the plan is to build 2 B17s, one to steam and the other as a static/"rolling" representation of the class :O . Sounds crazy  to me - spending years and a fortune constructing 100+tons of unusable fake loco, but it's probably been done before somewhere!

Anyway, I'd certainly look forward to seeing the working example come through Colchester one day (a recreation of no. 61672 would be my choice ;) ), and the advantage of the B17 is that it could probably run on most of our preserved lines without any axle loading problems.

There is a recent, if partial, precedent for this, when the Americans built part of a GW "Hall" for display in a Harry Potter theme park. It looked so accurate that it fooled a few people who thought the real thing had been shipped over.

What a brilliant idea.

In a few years time we could rebuild it into a B2. :D

Great idea - if they used the "static" loco as a base and get some use out of it. A reincarnated 61671 Royal Sovereign in apple green with BR number piloting 61672 - magic!

My big worry would be that some bright spark might want to fit the streamlining!

Was not a replica of a Dean single built for display somewhere? I seem to recall the tender boxes off that replica are now being used in another project elsewhere. Sorry, vague I know but it just clicked in the back of mind there.

A new B17 would be a fabulous site - crikey, we'll have the whole East Coast lineup in due course - imagine an LNER week at the Great Central Railway, with a B17, A1, A2, A3, A4, P2, G5, N2 and maybe even the B12 running the line :D

Totally agree with Colin, any fule kno that 61672 is the *only* sensible number for a new B17. Biased? Us? :D

The Royalty & Empire Exhibition at Windsor & Eton Station. The tender was built around an original LBSC C2X tender, and the axleboxes are to be used on the tender for the replica Marsh Atlantic "Beachy Head"

A non-working replica of LNWR "Bloomer" 1009 was built in 1991 and plinthed outside Milton Keynes station. I believe its now gone away for refurbishmentat Wolverton Works? No. 670 is under construction at Tyseley (since 1988, but the project restarted recently) and will be a working loco.

I know we disagreed about the abstraction of money by new build engines but there is need to ingnore the N7, God's Electric finest and last design. The last time it was on the GC the driver was cetainly using its acceleration to the maximum!

For a proper LNER experience they need to get in some teak coaches - how about Rothley with N7/N2 and quad art one platform and a A4 and Grealeys on the other!

Two, I'd missed that one!

Now for names....Glasgow Rangers and Glasgow Celtic perhaps, in honour of the original builders. Not sure how one would look in blue mind!

As the League's oldest club was bafflingly overlooked by the LNER the first time around, I'd plump for Notts County as a choice of name for one of the new B17s.

Shame on the GNR for not pushing a further, ooh, 16 or so miles southward on their line from Uttoxeter instead of ending it at Stafford, otherwise I'd have no hesitation in my recommendation of B17 name. ;)

Or you could always streamline it! :)

I see from their website that they are building one of each tender variant, to give one bona fide "Sandringham" (GE) and one "Footballer" (Group Standard).

I had quite forgot about the N7! My apologies.

Yes indeed...the thought of an all LNER worked GCR for a week is certainly something amazing. B)
