Great Western 850 pannier tank

Recommended Posts

There is another thread on this forum about 850s  in the special interest GWR stock section.

The J.H. Russel book "A pictorial record of Great Western Engines"  Volume 1 has some pictures and drawings of 850s.

There was a vast difference between the locos as built and the later appearance of many into the 1920s and on into BR days.

By the 1930s many had pannier tanks, some had extended bunkers a la 57XX with frames lengthened to suit, others had flared top bunkers Churchward style, some has H section spokes in the wheels.  Smokebox doors varied,

The only permutation I haven't seen was Saddle tank with the enclosed cab.

The 850  looks a bit odd as the wheelbase was 7ft 4 + 6ft 4  shorter at the back than at the front.  The later 2021s had a firebox a foot longer and an equal wheelbase of 7ft 4 + 7ft 4 and is a much more "balanced" looking device, sort of a lowered GTi version of the 57XX when in final enclosed cab pannier tank style, and the Bachmann 64XX chassis has the correct wheelbase in 00 albeit the wheels are 55" instead of 49"
