Hi all,

Hope all is well.

- Vitrains Loadhaul 37698 with Laserglaze, repainted EWS door and weathering - complete

- Bachmann class 90024 - repainted into GNER - complete

- Bachmann EWS 37114 with Shawplan windscreen etches, repainted roof, end details - in progress

- Bachmann DRS 37218 with Shawplan windscreen etches, rainbow railways Wipacs - in progress

- Hornby Loadhaul 56027 with Shawplan etches and cast buffer beams - in progress

- 51L POA - in progress

- Scratchbuilt test car mentor - in progress

- Hornby Colas 56049 - change of cabs, Shawplan etches, repainted - in progress

First workbench post was as follows - for the old layout Barham Sidings which has been sold on:

I’ve been umming and arring as to start attacking some of my stock to bring it more to the period I model  (circa 2005 GEML). Tonight I finally bit the bullet.

First up is a ‘super detail’ 86. I’m well aware of the flaws in the Heljan model however it’s somewhat of a good starting point. I’ve nicked the buffer beams/bogies/motor and combined them with the Hornby chassis and body - it’s amazing how much better if a mould the Hornby body is! I need to fit the buffer beams and fill the obvious gaps in the body for the clips and roof switch. This particular one is to become 86218 “NHS 50” with 86238 “Royal Anglian Regiment” to follow soon after. Two shots of it sitting on its new bogies:

A long long way to go but pleased with the start!

Another regular on the GEML was 47303 in Freightliner triple grey. I saw a cheap ish donor loco from Hattons and bought it instantly. It had the correct bulbs/headlights at the tight ends with a cut away buffer beam so I couldn’t resist! I’ve removed all of the details out ready for the paint to be stripped.

Hopefully some more updates in the coming weeks!

Kind regards,

Will

A quick update on the 86s - all stripped down using IPA and a toothbrush/a lot patience! I also purchased a cheap Lima MK2 for some updating - that was also stripped

I posed the Heljan roof details on the top of the loco - could do with a replacement pan!

Looking superb Will...thought you’d decided to update your modelling era and do 90034 in DRS colours at one point during the repaint! Just my wishful thinking...

How did you find the Bachmann 90 for repainting? Did it come apart and strip nicely or was it difficult? I may need a few 90s in various colours in the future so would be useful to know.

Jack.

Thabks for the kind words Jack! I wouldn’t mind a 90034 actually despite it being well out of era - that would be a good one to do I reckon.

Disassembling the model was quite difficult, there were a whole host of parts that sat in a small little box and I made sure I took photos of the internals to get it back together. People I’ve spoken to had a nightmare getting the glazing out, I put the whole thing in IPA which successfully soften the glue on the glazing which made it pop out really easily! Apart from that it wasn’t too difficult at all. Look forward to what you decide to respray mate.

Kind regards,

Will

A bit of an update tonight - first up 90024 has had the roof weathered, really chuffed with this! Just needs some brush work to finish it off and a coat of Matt varnish:

May need some wires on the layout for 024 despite no plans for them!

Also on the workbench are Loadhaul heavyweights 56055 and 37698.

56055 has had the top coat of black applied, just needs some small touch ups and then fading to match 2004 condition. 37698 has had the ploughs mounted to the body using superglued brass strip on the back of Bachmann ploughs. I’ve also changed the buffers to the class 60 type, they look much better than the original VItrains ones. I’ve also done the first layer of primer ready to paint the EWS door, which I’m hoping to get completed over the long weekend.

More soon!

Kind regards,

Will

A quick update on 37698 - roof had been weathered with a passing of roof dirt and a Matt black mix during the week. This evening I’ve also added the exhaust dirt:

A superb idea from my dad meant I could test on the 2D drawing of the 37 roof, so I’ve been practicing all weekend before doing 698:

Evening all,

Hope everyone is keeping well. Managed to get a few hours today to complete 37698, which I’m pretty pleased with! This is how she turned up in late March, plain VITrains model:246C5CF7-267C-42DB-A728-B7BD17F96E9D.jpeg.7fffa8cfaedaf8b2eac21f869a88ddb8.jpeg

Since then the list of mods is as follows:

- Shawplan LaserGlaze,

- Vitrains & Bachmann detailing packs added on both ends,

- Snowploughs fitted to the underframe,

- EWS door primed and resprayed,

- Faded orange and yellow nose,

- General weathering using the airbrush and various washes.

- Nose aerials from .33 wire

Overall I’m pretty pleased with the outcome;

Looking forward to getting a sound chip in 698 ready for service on Motts Lane!

Kind regards,

Will

Evening all,

Realised I hadn’t updated my workbench for a while so strap in for a bit of a lengthy update!

Ever since finishing 37698 I knew I needed something for her to pull. This superb shot from Gareth Bayer gave me great inspiration, so I decided to model mentor and of course 37114!

37698_37114GB_250804

The first thing on the list was to source some bits for mentor. Shane Wiltons superb etched sides were duly ordered and delivered within 48 hours - superb service!

83D0B728-6C15-4D94-94AF-4D6EF63CA8E0.jpeg.10098b682763a49524e5a5795bc20d65.jpeg

And posed between the locos on the donor Hornby MK1 BSK:

The next step was to cut off the roof, sand down the sides and enlarge the windows:

1B4F8150-CD36-41AE-A4D7-393E3863EC80.jpeg.e46f2778541e3e4b29dc070941c9b51f.jpeg

After that I sanded down the roof and soldered on the coach ends:

B2F418E2-21DB-4DDD-BC2F-FBB1D25013C6.jpeg.be6090e643d4989d508ccc7e5b96c38c.jpeg

This is as far as I’ve got with the project to date. Got a bit bored of sanding down the roof so need to finish that off. Following that I’ll create the roof well with plasticard for the Bachmann class 90 pan to sit on the roof.

Turning my attention to 37114, I’ve fitted the Shawplan roof grille:

099B47CC-8E77-449E-B705-E7E4393FDAB5.jpeg.ea280e376287bacfc186da1032b59aa0.jpeg

This just needs a Shawplan windscreen adding - so if anyone has a spare set of etches they’re not going to use please let me know! Unfortunately I broke mine and forgot to order the backing plate!

In the background you’ll see a class 56, which I’ve been converting for a friend into colas 56049 with the different cab ends. A donor red stripe 56049 and a spare coal 56 from eBay with the later cab forms the body of the loco.

The first job was to chop the cabs using a razor saw and a mitre box:

Creating this:

Which was then glued back together using liquid poly (thanks to @newbryford for the suggestion!) in between a sheet of plasticard. The plasticard was the same width as the blade of the saw.

After gluing it all back together it was detailed with Shawplan goodies:

And now painted apart from a final coat of black on the body and underframe:

Pretty pleased with 049! The remaining bodies I’ll make into a 56049 for Motts Lane in Dutch/TransRail me thinks!

Thanks for looking - would appreciate any feedback!

Kind regards,

Will

Hi Will, just seen your thread, lovely job on the 37 and the 56 - look forward to seeing them finished.

Thanks very much! Hoping the Shawplan windscreens turn up for the 37 tomorrow then I can crack on with it over the weekend. Not looking forward to chopping up a rare model but needs must!

Wow, Will I'm loving that model of 56049, it looks great, paintjob, cut n' shut and all.

Good luck with Mentor and 37114 as well, look forward to seeing them completed!

Jules

Thanks Jules, glad you like 049! I must say I’m really pleased with how it is looking, the paint colours are excellent and really finish it off. Cutting the cabs off was nerve racking but pleased I took the plunge!

Thanks both for your comments.
