Interesting and thanks. Might be hard for me to retrofit as I cant face resoldering everything. I'm thinking of something I could screw in and trap the wires.

I'm pretty certain that me posting trackwork isn't that interesting. However today the final catch point has been laid :)

A bit of a tight fit underneath!

1392288391_2020-05-1016_48_16.jpg.51f30b48be3afd3b2c21b585ce367f60.jpg

Surprisingly it fits and even more that it seems to work. I don't have enough depth for a tortoise with this arrangement so I'm going to fit a DCC Concepts Colbalt. Of course as soon as I think all is finished my flatbottom crossover has stopped throwing far enough. As one of the Colbalts is clicking at me I think I'll swap them both out for a pair of Tortoises which do seem more robust.

And an excellent bedtime read;

I'm not sure I have the ability to do it all properly but feel slightly inspired to have a go! First up will be facing point locks but I've somehow got to try and work out how to fit them!

Happy modelling all.

I've started posting a few things on twitter and had some good feedback around what to do for the fertiliser depot. Hence I made so very bad carboard mock ups....

921523318_2020-05-1813_38_34.jpg.d3b236f80c342cccae36c67368c5820b.jpg

So using alot of imagination I've gone with suggestions and will have a half open, half closed building... hopefully allow a few views like this;

174724149_2020-05-1813_39_05.jpg.798ede1ad0604b60345a6d376de119cd.jpg

1310133056_2020-05-1813_39_40.jpg.9d9cf443dc9b6cbfe37a19791b504dda.jpg

There is also an added bonus (?) of the depot being across a baseboard joint... so I'll have to go out of my comfort zone and build something that can lift out.

921523318_2020-05-1813_38_34.jpg.d3b236f80c342cccae36c67368c5820b.jpg

Right now I'm researching steel frame buildings as I really haven't a clue how they go together...(!!)

Anyway this part view of a shellstar depot is my inspiration.... I think it's Andover but could be very wrong!

c.1969 - unknown location.

Hope you're all keeping well!

I'm rubbish at woodwork. So what better way to spend a bank holiday than hack about some 4mm plywood... for what felt like forever! Anyways built a lift out section... currently nice and true so hopefully it stays this way!

Looks ok on the layout;

1533191142_2020-05-2511_42_56.jpg.b5fcaff41ef576965c08b3ec22c6c20d.jpg

I've fitted an extension and carefully lined it up to the lift out section - the remainder will be hidden when landscape forming starts. The plywood will eventually be skimmed and an attempt to make them look like concrete;

Rather than have concrete to the end of the siding I think a rundown open look might work ok; so have attacked my sleepers with a scapel and knife to make them look a big knackered... bit like me ;)

And while on a roll sawing wood I thought I'd sort out my control centre from this.....

1888339772_2020-05-2512_15_26.jpg.759d0b4d6e3817601ca4c56bb429d5a4.jpg

to this...

840660743_2020-05-2517_38_18.jpg.71fb243af37fe886a881cd3ea7c2bcaf.jpg

I've fitted a circuit breaker to control the two districts I've wired up so thought it'll need some protection. An old camera case has been used with a few 4mm ply sections cut with slots for the power supply and a seperate 12v one that currently powers a pair of DS64s for point motors.

Packs away quite neatly;

What wonderful weather for a bank holiday... in fact they all seem ok while lockdown has been on!

Happy Modelling

Will :)

A little update on signal box progress.

1994867448_2020-05-3016_58_30.jpg.47df490e8b55a861cd5b3ccb33667d81.jpg

Nothing is quite sqaure as the roof hasn't been glued on yet. Added some tiles today which I'm sure to the trained eye looks awful!

2046159365_2020-05-3016_54_10.jpg.4a2cb99180e13e845aaf1dd25c4fa5bd.jpg

I'm happy enough with them though. Question is should an late 80s/early 90s box have a chimney and fire?

1973565420_2020-05-3016_53_58.jpg.056c40266b869aab89208a6cd6900ed3.jpg

Guttering is my next challenge - the supplied versions are too short so think i need to find some alternatives, The large piece of work was embedding the window arches in rather than my first effort which looked like eyebrows. I'm much happier with the result now. Of course it wouldn't be me if i didnt break something so have repaired a set of windows with plastikard scraps when the knife slipped!

A few test shots to see obvious problems etc.

cheers

Well I've been distracted by messing around with locos but recently thought I'd have a break and work a bit on the signal box1916342979_2020-08-1818_18_23a.jpg.e7af90d64709b8dfb35541b1c59ac9fc.jpg

It's the first time I've had a go at painting bricks but followed some good tution examples on the web and copied a few photos. Painted the mortar first then picked out a few bricks.

762828568_2020-08-1619_01_22.jpg.49756d33250a373b8749812c6231c133.jpg

Next up was a light orangeish colour followed by humbrol brick; then railmatch brick all dry brushed on with a final mix with some brown n brick.

Next up is guttering which is a simple experiment using resistor legs (which i keep when i snip off excess length) bent round a brass c section and soldered.

20200818_190301a.jpg.2434adb3444a0916b2434cadf7427088.jpg

The end is just a dab of solder filed. Probably all grossly over scale and I bet each section is too wide but there are only so many legs I fancy soldering ;)

965691721_2020-08-1818_18_40a.jpg.b8f9c7fe502c06ac3cf439cc5795f923.jpg

The door is an example of my shoddy painting skills. I was going to paint it again but have grown to like it's rustic/weathered look. LOL.

And the roof isn't going to stay that Jazy. I'm hoping that a wash of slate colour will look interesting and not uniform when I paint it.

Happy modelling all!

I've surprisingly enjoyed soldering up guttering from brass U section, brass straight wire and scrap brass/scrap LED legs and resistor legs (yep i do save everything I think is remotely usefull!).

In a slightly mad moment I was planning on attaching the guttering to the roof.... which I no idea how that will have worked with a removable roof. Anyway thought better of that idea and it's now firmly attached to the body.

966744393_2020-08-2316_55_11a.jpg.296dce9c263fac344c8c0471db71ca47.jpg

Next up is fitting some wire for grab handrails; a bit of paint tidy up and fit the interior.

I've made a start on the interior made from a severn models kit, some scrap brass and some 3d printed stuff found on Ebay;

TBH I've now idea what does what so to a trained signalman this probably looks awful!

It was amazing how hard fitting the glazing was which I did over the course of a week!

207684647_2020-09-2714_10_51.jpg.e3faf67275c5b4391b7af6d7654d87e6.jpg

Coming together now - a few details here and there to sort out and then have the fun task of trying to work out what rodding should come out of the box

Happy Modelling all

I've made a start on the fertiliser depot which is very loosly based on the one at Andover.... mainly because it's a very small when compared to the original and i don't have many photos of the structure!

The basic structure has been built from some lovely marine 2mm ply offcuts - ! really enjoyed working with this material! Plenty of reinforcement has been added to try and prevent warping etc. I wanted a open view on one half so decided to have a go building a steel frame for brass I sections. I've got the roof supports to build and currently not sure if I'll use plastikard or brass.

1306379908_2020-09-3014_23.44-1.jpg.dea799734c56c3e395c6d3a02640396c.jpg

As the siding is not parallel to the basedboard edge means the shape of the roof is a little complicated but hopefully adds a bit of interest.

1897075013_2020-10-0212_21_46.jpg.7bcb68e2b9e7dfec56d05639c01a690d.jpg

It's been a bit of a marathon cladding the structure in brickwork and corrugated sheets which have been scribed to suggest standard sheets have been used.

I've also clad under the open roof to try and hide the ply in an attempt to make the roof look lightweight and thin. Hopefully that work when finished!

570817180_2020-10-0212_21_11.jpg.14664011fe774013e6740b95ec5546de.jpg

A bit of the inside will be modelled to suggest something is there as one day i hope to model a working door. Thats a long term project! Anyway lots to do detail wise and plenty of tidy ups needed... I'm already pleased with some of the views it offers and I think hides the baseboard joint quite nicely!

1118151635_2020-10-0212_20_48.jpg.081dda11aab8dcc497e184e6d887038d.jpg1301827642_2020-10-0212_21_01.jpg.22a80e778c8ff40a4ce1e6eb08dc36f7.jpg

When the frame is glued to the roof it's legs will be nice and straight ;)

Happy Modelling all

Thought has turned to how to hide the entrance to the traversa and so I've taken on the first part of the scenic barrier;

1427746427_2020-10-2515_14_30.jpg.873978eb537aeaac96a308492761db54.jpg

I've attempted an eliptical arch so that the overall bridge is not at right angles with an attempt to eventually trying to hide the corner at the back. Hopefully having the bridge at an angle will allow me to have a curved backscene

1964715855_2020-10-2515_14_36.jpg.21057bd518f96c94cb813c0795859664.jpg

I'm planning on a girder bridge and retaining wall at the back.... haven't yet worked out the front with it sloping away although I think a road embankment or similar hidded by trees is my best thought at present!

Just catching up with your thread Will - wow that fertiliser depot looks fantastic! It also wouldn’t look amiss on my layout given the faded looks quite Anglia turquoise! ;) If you don’t mind me asking which drain pipes have you used? They look great!

The bridge also looks great, will it span over the back most track as well? Very impressive doing that freehand!

Looking forward to more!

Kind regards,

Will

Thanks all!

Its not really the right way round but I think if I can sort out the exit of the layout I can then work out if I can sneak in a curved backscene... and then see if the back of the layout looks OK. Obviously proper layout planning might do this the other way round ;)

Plan is for the branch to go under a plate girder bridge which will be the next section I'm going to build. I dont think I can do the precision needed for brick so this one is going to be clad in stone. Admittedly im not looking forward to the arch!

My anglia green wasn't supposed to be anglia. The funny thing is I've got a pot of anglia green from a joblot of railmatch paints off ebay but thought it looked too bright on a tester... so mixed up my own version which ended up very close to anglia green... and then applied a white wash over it.  Its nowhere near the shellstar blue I intended but I'm happy with it now. Just waiting for an opportunity to airbrush some doors.

Drain pipes are just brass u section and 2mm brass rod. The supports are legs from resistors which bend really easily and I have loads of scrap. A blob of solder which is filed is the end cap. There is a cruel close up on the signalbox. All soldered up its quite strong and then quickly primed and painted with halfords rattle cans.... I must get through a load of matt black in a year!

Cheers all for looking

Will

Hi Will

A high tech mock up of the second span. Lol

20201028_095450.jpg.a435edfcbcc929ce726a917f179a96ea.jpg

Aim is for a fairly tight clearance and I might bring it a bit more inwards. Its an area of the layout that I'm not totally happy with and wish I had more space!

Cheers

I've finally had a break from work and so had some time in the garage (where's summer as it's well cold). Limited progress so far other than getting a basic coat of paint on the track and started work on the girder bridge extension.

177026117_2020-11-0815_25_08.jpg.fabf2c9185218ad89230390d76ba9e9a.jpg

I've tried to make the bridge a curve so that it'll hopefully allow me to include a curved backscene here. Space is so tight I'm not sure how successful it'll be and I also need to fit some retaining walls or similar to suggest some thing is going on and it's not a bridge to nowhere.

Spraying the track has at least made it look a bit more uniform. Next up will be some lighter browns on the less used track and new concrete section.

The bridge is really starting to take shape now Will. It's a very tight space at the back even for a retaining wall but you can probably just about get away with it!

I can't think of a better person to take on one of Martin's projects and make it a winner. Please keep posting progress shots!

Thanks Guy!

I was lucky to get Matrins efforts and his flatbottom crossover is still my favourite part of the layout.

The back of the layout is my biggest worry so we'll see if it looks ok when the bridge and wall is in place. I'm taking some inspiration from St Merryn here so while it won't be as effective hopefully I can something similar

cheers
