dj_crisp
I've been working on the station waiting room. The roof has been quite a mammoth task and test of patience! It's needed plenty of reinforcement to try and stop warping. It'll need a bit of filler here and there but I'm looking forward to seeing how it looks with a coat of primer. I plan on fitting some under canopy lighting on the platform side. So have fitting some brass tube to allow threading of cables when I've worked out how to do the florescent tube lighting. Enjoy your Bank Holiday! Looks like good modelling weather to me!
dj_crisp
A bit more progress on the station buildings front. I'm quite pleased with the valence which has nicely enhanced the roof - I think it's now ready for a coat of primer to show up errors and then I'm planning on doing a bit of an interior - which will be a stark run down 90s look (i.e. next to nothing) The other building I've been battling with is the booking office; It's fair to say I've had a fair old battle to get this one this far as I've found lots of parts don't fit right or are warped so the roof has been rebuilt with lots of stiffening added. Still I'm going with it being an old building which has bent a little due to time... well thats my excuse! As it's a rather famous building (well in the modelling world) I'm doing a spot of customising which probably would never happen in reality which is a steeper pitch to the roof a longer platform canopy for the bay. The back of the building probably shows what I mean; The steeper pitch is there just to give me a fighting chance of building a straight(ish) canopy as my first attempt with original pitch warped badly. Plenty of use of filler! I think the real one has some guttering around this area hence the approximation made. Next up is thousands of batterns so I won't be reporting back on progress for quite some time! The valancing (along with some stiffening support will hopefully cure the gentil arc I've created I plan on adding lights and have included some metal brass tube in the platform facing canopy roof to allow wires to be fed into the building. I think interior might be beyone me but plan on adding some interior lights but the blinds will be closed Thanks for reading ! Will
dj_crisp
When I get round to building the final board of the layout my aim is for it to contain the main station buildings. In the last few weeks my focus has been on building a platform. Adding batterns to the roof of the main building and building a canopy. My first attempt at the canopy roof warped so I've started again using thin ply; I've made the pitch of the roof steeper and that has allowed me to get enough reinforcement in to stop it warping (as badly) this time around... It feels like I've cut serveral hundred batterns but hopefully they look ok. The canopy slots into the main building which has the same roof profile... this is all probably prototypically unlikely but hopefully plausable. Next up will be legs... which at the moment I've no idea how to do it so will spend the rainy afternoon planning something or other. At the moment the temporary supports give an impression on what it will look like and I think I'm going to go down the double legged approach to platform canopies as I doubt I can build something strong enough using single supports. I'm looking forward to adding the valence along the front which is rather nice... the rear shows what it'll look like. The platform has been built the same way as my earlier attempt... I now need to do the opposite platform. Final shot is a pacer in the bay... I'm hopeful this will be a nice view and so I'll need to detail this area carefully. Perfect weather for hiding indoors and progressing some projects... enjoy your weekend! Will
dj_crisp
The sun has been out so while on my lunchbreak I've taken a few photos of a mock up of the main station board A bit of imagination is needed!! The down waiting room will be the edge of the board and I've managed to squeeze in small part of a station forecourt as well as a loading dock that will be in a disused state. This'll will be the view from the viewing side. The platform has been built in the same way as the other... the only difference being I'm trying out some curbstones and will skim the road surface in plaster when the time comes. I'm not sure what type of fencing to add at this stage. A view overlooking to the far bay. Next challenge is building the supporting canopy in brass which I may take on soon as I now have the materials in stock. I've got a footbridge to build and I'm currently debating if this will be a big enough screen as a scenic break... or if I need to include a road bridge or similar too. On the buildings front it's all been about chimneys and roofs! The main building kept me busy for a few days as the chimneys were a challenge! I've used glue to suggest rendering which I hope looks OK when primed as it's currently see through! It's a bit more noticeable on the down buildings chimney. The chimney pots have been cleaned up in a mini drill which hopefully has improved them. Have a great Bank Holiday all! Will 11
dj_crisp
I've focussed my time on building the canopy supports and adding valences. It's been a fairly long task tbh and there is plenty of tidy ups and filling to do before it's finished... and I've got lighting to sort out. Anyhow the brass frame is in white primer in the photo. I chose brass as I'm hoping it's fairly strong. This is built from H section length ways which has had slots filed to accept the cross beams (made from hollow rectangle brass) to make soldering much easier. Thankfiully my soldering is hidden The legs are 2mm brass and the whole lot has been glued to planked plastikard. Brian from timbertracks kindly supplied lasercut canopy brackets & extra valences so the canopy matches the main building and I've carefully stuck them to the brass using spacers to square things off. I'm debating on adding a square section for the feet or leave as. If left as is I'll need to tidy the holes drilled into the platform a fair bit. Final shot of a pacer resting and hiding from the sum in the bay. Will 14
dj_crisp
I've been sloshing modroc around... Actually been quite fun... In all two embankments have had the modroc treatment. I've never used modroc before but I think the idea is to have several layers... I did 2-3. Then I guess skimming with plaster?
d winpenny
Looks great, layouts always look better with the railway running through the landscape instead of across a billiard table david 2

RMweb Gold The Fatadder Posted June 16, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 16, 2021 Makes such a difference when you start getting the modroc on and move away from the plywood expanse. Enjoying watching it progress.
dj_crisp
Thanks all for your comments. It strangely does feel like good progress and I plan to skim a layer of plaster soon then paint it but won't add scenics for a while. I'm also thinking more about the backscene and I'm debating on extending the depth of the boards by a few inches due to how close the branch bridge is to it. I dont what to go too wide as they need to remain portable and easy for me to move around but I reckon I could have 3-6inches extra space. Or I try something to hide the closeness and save loads of work!
Popular Post dj_crisp
Despite the best efforts of DHL I've recently received an important aspect of the layout.... the traversers! (DHL claimed I signed for the package despite me not being home and away for a week.... so it was left at my front door for ages at the same time as local flooding reports on twitter.... in the end it all survived.) The Kit is from https://www.graingeandhodder.co.uk/ and when it first arrived the number of parts rather scared me! However it's very well made and even someone with my lack of woodworking skills managed to put it all together! They don't make one thats long enough for me but the units can be joined so I've opted for a larger one (3 coaches in length) and a small 2 coach effort so it'll fit a loco and 4 coaches. One advantage i see is that by splitting It also allows me to use them for different layouts etc. The boards went together really well and are nice and square with only minor tweaks for smooth operation and I'm pleased with them. I've ordered some cork and now just need to work out the best approach for a stand?? And then I'll have a 6 road traverser and the ability to run trains! I've also had a bit of a play with the station building attempting to improve under the canopy. I'll be surprised if you can spot the extra 10 hours of effort I've put in!! The obvious one is the building has had it's first coat of primer so spot mistakes and areas to tidy up (which are plenty) It's amazing that I've used an entire large can of Halfords white primer on this! The wood just seemed to take the primer like a sponge! The valencing is quite fragile and easily broken but I'm going to claim it adds character Also when I've stuck it into the platform there shouldn't be an floating legs. I guess I had better start some painting soon! ATB Will 15

RMweb Gold The Fatadder Posted August 16, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 16, 2021 (edited) I had been looking at that traverser on eBay as a candidate for potentially replacing the home made one I have on Wheal Imogen. Will be interested to hear how it performs in use. station building is looking very good! Edited August 16, 2021 by The Fatadder

So far I'm impressed. I just need to work out how to support it so am looking around for ideas. Cheers Will
dj_crisp
I found a new paint in Halfords the other day... and I rather like it! A google screen grab of Tomperrow bridge hopefully gives you an idea of the effect I'm going to attmpt if my painting skills are up to it. I'm also experimebting with it as a base for brickwork for the platforms. While the weather was nice I've also sprayed some cheapo lights a faded green which I'm quite pleased with the end result; I've got a period of rest ahead of me following a cycling mishap so wont be doing much modelling but might have a go at a bit of sloshing paint around on structures. I hope alls good with you and thanks for reading Will 15

dj_crisp
To keep myself entertained over the last week of recovering I've been sloshing paint on the station buildings. I've been limited to Humbrol as at least I can get the lids off one handed! They're both about half way painted with the brickwork largely done and as its sunny thought I'd take a few snaps to see if they looked passable.. First up the waiting room; The view from the back is at the front of the layout so i tried to be neat.... but that doesn't always go to plan! The main building is probably the hardest thing i've painted! The roof will have another coat for the stonework and then its onto the canopy roof. You can probably seen that I've damaged the odd valence an a couple of stantions... of of the drawbacks of doing this one handed on a fairly large and heavy struture. Still they'll be an easy fix. The big question is what colour to paint the doors.... and if i'm brave enough to take on the ornate stuff on the supports! Currently I'm favouring Red.... St Erth had red in the late 80's early 90s or i could always do it NSE red... or go blue. I don't think i can match Culham painting wise as thats beyond my skillset! The cop out is leaving them all white which is rather tempting... but as i plan for the under roof and valance to be white then i think there is perhaps a bit too much white. As always please let me know if there is anything that looks daft! 12

dj_crisp
Spot the difference... TBH not a lot as I've had one of those periods where modelling has taken a back seat. Anyhow I've painted the doors gloss red and today airbrushed them with satin varnish to tone it all down. Painting the supports has been a serious test of patience!! And I also decided to glaze waiting room. One side will have some interior detail but the other will be some toilets so have used some scrap packaging which has a nice slightly see through effect. The big challenge will be trying to creat some form of modernish lighting for under the canopies... then probably some light weathering. Happy Modelling all!! dj_crisp
Well I've been slapping some paint on the bridge and I think it's about ready to be planted on the layout and then I'll add the road surface. I've been practising with an acrylic weathering set intended for locomotives So theres lots of weathered black, roof dirt, underframe dirt and brake dust applied.... and some BR green as thats the only non-weathering acrylic colour I have. Eventually there will be a secondary road here... i won't do that until I've installed the backscene on the layout. For the underside of the girder I've cheated and put in a suggestion of something or other being there and sprayed it with red primer.... my thoughts are this is at the back of the layout so it won't be seen much; And finally i did get some enamels for the bricks which i then weathered based on a snap of a bridge on the camel trail in Cornwall (well maybe a bit lighter weathering than the real thing. It's one of those projects that I could carry on messing about with and there are bits I don't like... but there are plenty of other bits to do so I'll leave this one as is for a bit. Hopefully it looks like a plausable bridge and screens the fiddle yard ok! thanks for looking Will 14

dj_crisp
Following the bridge I've moved onto weathering the down platform building before the main one is attempted. I'm trying for a building in good shape but probably due for a repaint. hopefully that comes across ok! Same weathering colours have been used as the bridge (I'm getting plenty of value out of the weathering locos acrylic paint set) but I've probably used more sand paper than before to try and get a worn luck. Not sure if it's quite worked but will do for now. I've recently been spending most of my time staring at roofs and one thing stands out to me is there seems to be plenty of lichen in the south west. So thought I'd try and simulate this.... Overall I'm fairly happy with the result so will do similar on the main builing. Happy Modelling all!
