RMweb Gold Corbs Posted April 1, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 1, 2019 I'm not sure how I feel about this. Sure it would be good to preserve them but should we be salvaging wrecks? Quote The Stanier Steam Society have begun initial surveys into salvaging two tenders from the wreck of the SS Thistlegorm in the Red Sea. The tenders, which are still chained to the deck of the ship, lie roughly 20 metres below sea level. A spokesperson for the SSS said "Whilst the 8F on the seabed is probably too far gone, we're going to bring the tenders back up to the surface for the first time in eighty years and flog them off to a new-build group on facebook or something like that". -Elephant and Train Magazine

RMweb Gold adb968008 Posted April 1, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 1, 2019 (edited) Don’t forget to drain the tender tank of water first though, to reduce the lifting weight. I have a spare TCDD Hornby 8f tender, I should put it into a goldfish bowl perhaps ? Edited April 1, 2019 by adb968008 3

RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted April 1, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 1, 2019 Just like the Tiatanic swimming pool, amazingly these tenders water compartments were found to be still full. Mike. 1
Fat Controller
One of the French magazines ran a similar story about salvaging one of the 1-4-1Rs that was lost on board a ship sunk by a U-boat. The story even used photos of one; unfortunately the presence of a goldfish in the last shot rather gave the game away.

RMweb Premium MPR Posted April 1, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 1, 2019 I recommend going to see the Vasa if you ever visit Stockholm - it is unbelievably impressive, an almost complete ship.. The Mary Rose is basically half a Tudor warship, enough to see how it would have looked, but sectioned like "Ellerman Lines", The Vasa is the real deal. When it was recovered, it was shifted to a dry dock, still more or less submerged and dug out by the archaeologists layer by layer as the water level was lowered. When the excavation was complete, the Vasa was floated across to its new home. 1
Steamport Southport
Quite common to raise wrecks. Mary Rose is a good example, However retrieving the Staniers is a bit pointless. There are still a handful knocking about in the Middle East and one was even scrapped a few years ago. Jason
RMweb Gold adb968008 Posted April 2, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 2, 2019 As an aside, are there any LMS locos still needing a Stanier tender ? all i can think of is 45163/45293 and 48173, but havent they got tenders already ? 44901 but without a boiler is this any realistic chance of steaming again ? RMweb Premium MPR Posted April 3, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 3, 2019 On the subject of the Vasa... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/stories-47791179/finding-the-ship-lost-for-more-than-300-years
Steamport Southport
I believe raising the Wasa (or Vasa) was a big deal at the time. Airfix even made a kit of it. https://www.airfix.com/uk-en/wasa-gift-set-1-144.html Jason 1
Bernard Lamb
Now I could go along with an attempt to salvage this locomotive. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_State_Railways_PC_class Bernard

But tenders can be swapped around/borrowed, because the locos will never all be fit to run at the same time.
