Time for an update.

I've decided to keep any stock work on here, as well as work on the layout.

There is an *almost definite* plan to commence tracklaying in the next few days.

In the meantime, I have been busy on the graffiti front, painting up these three, rather than relying on decals:

All copied from prototype pics. There is more weathering to be done over the top of the graffiti.

Much as I don't like graffiti, it is part of the modern scene. You are going to tell us how you did it, aren't you? ;)

Goes to look for some in-progress pics of the US wagons and surprisingly, I haven't any......

I've done them the same way as my British graffiti by building the paint up in layers - small brushes and a reasonably steady hand - but TBH, it isn't critical if a colour goes slightly astray!

Here's a link to some of my HRA shorties. Showing the "layering"

edit: found a WIP shot.

That is some of the best modelling of graffiti I’ve seen - really well observed and executed

Thanks!

I have a load of saved photos on my PC to go at.

I find them a "quick win" modelling project.

More soon.

Off to lay some track!

And so it begins.

There are 3 points switches under there.

My now preferred method of tracklaying.

Small amount of PVA glue every 3-4 sleepers.

Weighed down to let the glue dry.

To get an even load spread, I have a few pieces of 12mm MDF cut slightly larger than a house brick.

The MDF provides a smooth transition between any weight applied.

us1.jpg.20b0374d65149691716a685c246dfded.jpg

I could use any random weights, such as paint tins etc, but I have a few bricks left over from a house extension project and kept aside for this purpose.

More track soon!

Can never have enough bricks, you've done well obtaining Peco 83, or did you stash them before covid set in!!

Stashed before anyone ever heard of Covid19!

Wiring is complete and trains were running last night.......

And a few more nights after that.

CSX MP15AC hauls a cut of hoppers to the paint/graffiti/weathering shops......

I do have a few cars in mid-graffiti phase.

I have taken WIP pics, so will post them all together shortly.

I see that with the mix of ownership of the various hoppers and the CSX switcher, even Union Pacific (UP) is getting in on the act with your trackside structure there - just needs some yellow paint. :jester:

is there a transition between the 5mm foam down to 3mm for all your spurs of the mainline, like the real railroads do!!!  :read::scratchhead::D

It's all laid to mainline standards......

There is enough distance between main and spurs to raise the ground 2mm instead!

I did initially look at using a mix of Code 83 and Code 75 but eventually decided against it.

Some of the hoppers will be going into new ownership.

The (currently unregistered as far as I know) codes CCAX and CCMX may give a clue as to my fictional cement/aggregates operations.

The logo may be red and castle shaped.............

  • newbryford changed the title to Bryford County. Let's play tag
  • RMweb Premium

Time for some WIP tagging.

All the tags illustrated are copied from similar car types and in some cases - only removed by a few numbers from the prototype. Most of them have been found on  http://rrpicturearchives.net/ but every now and then, a screenshot of one of the many US videos on youtube is used (DTC and the potash hopper are from such a source)

Staring off with a boxcar.

In most cases, the tagger usually leaves the number clear, but in this case, they didn't.

Staring off with the basic layer:

1079551354_BoxDTC(1)s.jpg.abd32210786b560bb61d30dd53e66696.jpg

A big chunk of black is added - following faint pencil lines.

2073393722_BoxDTC(2)s.jpg.cf1597e4c0d223308582b52f402cb220.jpg

The a few white details:

788992265_BoxDTC(3)s.jpg.667147fe72ce5ff748f2e41aac7979ff.jpg

And a dusty wash to tone it down. There will be a bit more detail weathering to complete

2018940386_BoxDTC(4)s.jpg.1de0e17030db74946e84b95f1dcb9d55.jpg

Next up, rail level spraying;

Pencil outlines

1271561867_hoppercargill(1)s.jpg.d54ac8647c7d53cf5981548ecdb5f1d0.jpg

Followed by the background silver and white

733264962_hoppercargill(2)s.jpg.e89853d76035b52573592540e454b161.jpg

Layering of the lighter colours on the right, outline on the left:

1722860935_hoppercargill(3)s.jpg.1d0d5cd196f4f631369d8d5aa04e8a20.jpg

More colour

418358351_hoppercargill(4)s.jpg.dad0702a1f0a97d73cf14006df6a261b.jpg

Outline around RIVER, more colour on SVORO, then it's ready for a bit of extra weathering445932577_hoppercargill(5)s.jpg.cc01cd889e4e7043273b8999f01b5185.jpg

This one will have different tags on either side - first up GALA - the easy one

271113261_hopperpotash1(1)s.jpg.251b0e51b7ad735c82d413b24373ba30.jpg

In this case, the outline was done with a fine Posca paint pen in black, but because the line wsn#t fine enough, I made it thinner by tickling the inner edges with white.

168440475_hopperpotash1(3)s.jpg.4714abb88e865c2479b9e20ac25d72ff.jpg

And a bit of detail to finish off the tag - there will be some more weathering.

1239136994_hopperpotash1(4)s.jpg.e309546be15de5d7ea1935c0b318dc68.jpg

One big advantage of this form of model "painting" is that if it goes slightly astray, it's easy to add a bit more paint over the top. In that respect, it's far easier than finishing off the edges around a yellow panel on a Brit loco!

There are a few more also in progress.

One of them is a  Railbox that is quite eye-catching.

Time to unveil the railbox

Straight out of the cardboard box

643500412_railbox(1).jpg.d1bba3f58e8c36918c44765f0c68f325.jpg

A quick layer of white to take out the bulk of the base branding

Main "undercoat" applied

972841123_railbox(3).jpg.739692db342f4f83466a907a1b833032.jpg

Then it's time for the outline detail

Filling in a bit more

185497341_railbox(5).jpg.06a16a96a9f029a15cc87797d8768aeb.jpg

Final detail

1713387407_railbox(6).jpg.be32ca28c40d6b13fdfa381fda6b0591.jpg

And a pale thin grey gray wash to tone it down.

And the other side of the potash hopper.

611326786_hopperpotash2(1).jpg.6e227cf13ffae45d52be391b1fac2741.jpg

In this case, I used a fine POSCA paint pen for the outline, rather than a brush

Thinning down the black outline with white on the inside

964898232_hopperpotash2(3).jpg.b117971431e36b5820c805bbf4256fa7.jpg

Managed to miss out recording a step - black  - but then patched over with blue.

486482199_hopperpotash2(4).jpg.2202cbeaaf49026c5364eb2a509b4144.jpg

A bit of tidying up with a fine brush

1643477829_hopperpotash2(5).jpg.2dde5ab15c6c76bd38bb0b4aad606e85.jpg

Add the yellow and then another pale grey wash. There is a bit more topcoat weathering to be done using powders.

Another hopper - with full height tagging.

I'll let the pictures show the steps.

The above has had a thin dusty wash to tone it down - there'll be some weathering powders added to finish it off.
