But with a Kent Coast logo? Unless it was running as a fill-in, I would've thought that KC emblemed stock would've remained somewhere close to the Kent coast. Or is that naivety beyond measure?

Rolling stock allocation was not my province - I was Investment Manager - so I have no idea of what moved when. But there would be times when units were moved between Sub-Sectors, so maybe, prior to them being rebranded. Prior to the 1970s, there was no visual or intended allocation of units by depot on Southern Region, except where specific services needed it, e.g. Hastings diesels all dwelt at St Leonards, he being their Patron Saint. HAPs worked on more than one Sub-Sector, so might be moved to cover shortfall. And during this era, NSE managed to electrify East Grinstead with no additional EMUs required, as had previously happened for Hastings Electrification, so moving units among Sub-Sectors was happening to provide more intensive usage.

There are not many Kent local services that do not radiate out from London, commuting being the primary market. The 2-HAPs were primarily for use on South-Eastern longer distance, non-suburban, services out of Victoria, Charing Cross and Cannon Street, so were branded Kent Coast. The suburban services were 2nd class only and branded Kent Link, mostly EPBs.

Showing as new arrivals on the newsletter (email) today, but OOS on the website.

Maybe all gone to pre-orders?

Waiting patiently for Kernow to email me to say they've dispatched my blue/grey and NSE ones...

How far did they get out of CX? Folkestone?

If so, I may have to have one, as I may have commuted on it.

If they got to Folkestone, they would have continued via Dover to Sandwich, then in and out of Minster (reverse) and on to Ramsgate. Alternatively they would have gone from Ashford to Margate via Canterbury West, Minster and Ramsgate.

But some time in the '80s, they stopped using the Dover route. A disaffected member of traincrew - I think he had been reduced in grade from driver to guard, due to fiddling expenses while on staff consultation business - vexatiously pointed out that the single-bore tunnels west of Dover would not permit emergency escape from non-corridor stock. So that was that.

Have no fear they have arrived at Guildford and will be in Camborne on Monday. The website shows Camborne stock only, it changes from Pre order status to out of stock when we know they are on the way before showing the actual stock once they arrive.

Haps probably ran over almost every electrified line on the SR at one time or another. They were removed completely from the South Eastern Division in the mid-1980s in favour of the 4 Cap conversions but some 2 Haps returned to that territory towards the end of their service lives, with a few being formed up into more 4 Cap units, but the other way round in that the motor brakes were at the outer end instead of the middle.

Here is one at Folkestone Warren in the 1960s:

Very pleased with mine, but fair bit of light bleed into the cab from the headcode LED, added some black plasticard strips to prevent this. Also yellowed the LEDs, and changed the headcode to something more suitable for me! Oh and taken the Kent Coast logos off too.

Looks great! How did you managed to dull the LEDs?

Thanks, just a bit of yellow paint, though I may revisit the headcode box as looks a bit too yellow.

One word of warning, getting the body off is tough! I cut off the lugs that hold the glazing/body down for easier access.

Sounds promising for adding DCC. I remember the battle getting a 4-CEP apart.

You're not kidding, Bachmann have this problem with all their EMUs/DEMU that i've purchased. I don't know why they put the retaining lugs so close to the corners where its almost impossible to spring the body enough to release them. If they moved them in board 1-2cm it would make access a lot easier.

It is worse. The EPB and DEMU had at least 2 screws on the cab end to help get the body off. The MLV, a dream with 4 screws. The HAP copies the CEP. All lugs, 4 set at around 10mm from the ends.

Motor bogie wise, no different to any other Bachmann EMU, which works for me anyway. DCC chip is in the same place and 21 pin, no change.

Speaker space:

EPB none but I stuck a round one under the roof above the chip. Worked fine by me, not really visible. This can be doubtless repeated on the HAP and DEMU if required.

DEMU, you can remove a seat section and put in a oblong shaped (with rounded ends) speaker facing through the floor, bring your own wires.

HAP, same big seat section can be removed, but here you fit a 11mm by 15mm sugar cude. Contacts are in place so no wiring is required.

Couplings between the coaches are the same on the EPB, DEMU and HAP. CEP uses a similar system but with 4 contacts instead of 2 between each bar. 4-TC uses a different better system IMHO and a shame it's not copied here.

Model sophistication, in terms of fitted detail etc. The DEMU has easily the edge over both the EPB and HAP, with the EPB having more roof fittings than the HAP but otherwise they are on a par.

I have not compared lighting yet.

And now for some pictures comparing the 2-HAP to the 2-EPB and the DEMU:

Left to right: DEMU, EPB, HAP -- note how clean the HAP is on the roof.

Close up of the DTCL (Driver trailer composite with lavatory). Top DEMU, bottom HAP. They are essentially the same vehicles on the prototypes but note the extra roof details on the DEMU.

DTCL side views. Top DEMU, bottom HAP. Note different bogies. The

Roof views of the DMBSO (Driving Motor Brake Second Open). Top 2-EPB, bottom 2-HAP. Essentially the same vehicle but again note the extra roof clutter on the EPB and periscopes.

Side views of the DMBSO. Top 2-EPB, bottom 2-HAP. Essentially the same vehicle but again note the extra roof clutter on the EPB and periscopes. Note cab handrail differences too.

Lighting shot of the 2-HAP, again half power. Indeed it is brighter but not (for me) shockingly so.

Red tail lights on the 2-HAP. Both models are about the same.
