Still t find someone to get the transfers from for the loco and caboose. I have considered dry transfers, but finding them in any form of Railroad Roman hasn't been easy in that WS do a sheet, but in the size I want, there is only 3 Rs, not much good when you need 4.


Unfortunately custom transfers in white are going to cost quite a lot. You’re probably looking at artwork plus the sheets so for a one off dry transfers will be a lot cheaper. If you were doing a layout with 5+ locos plus stock it becomes more viable. I did an A4 sheet for Cascade Southern, for locos and coaches, so I didn’t need to re-letter the freight stock when I had a load of this range. That cost about £60 back in the early 2000’s.

One of the Slim Gauge Circle is making me some very small Rio Grande logos for a panel van. Unfortunately I don't have his email address, so won't see him until the next meet in Rugby.

However, after attempting a strip down of the caboose, the glazing is proving resilient to removal, so the planned respray will be forgotten and it will be left as is, apart from white railings/handrails. So maybe, dry transfers maybe the cheapest option, even if I have to buy two sheets.

It also covers Roco Minitrains and a bit about Jouef. Main reason for it was, for many, it was the beginnings of narrow gauge modelling in HO scale. It also cover a bit about the latest developments in OO9.

Sad new about Hatton's. I have managed to get a surprising amount of HOn3 from them. Only last week I bought 6 Micro-Trains cars for a tenner each. Quite a few Blackstone cars picked up from the pre-owned section, as well as buildings, all much cheaper than is being asked on ebay. The vast majority of my HO cars and vehicles have been supplied by them.

In one of those "oops I did it again" moments, I have now got hold of a DCC fitted, Spectrum 2-8-0. As always, a sucker for a good price, it was £125 from Anglo-American. looks unused, no sigh on the wheels of ever being run. Suppose I'll have to get the Mogul fitted now.

Although, after stripping the Mogul down, I think it will be best to just remove the decoder from the 2-8-0. It also has a loose piece of glazing and the driver figure is rattling around in the cab, but that is proving impossible to remove. Must be stuck in with some Chinese super-duper glue.

Bucking Snow on Cumbres Pass ~ 75 years ago!

Here we see Denver & Rio Grande Western No. 483 No. 487 K- 36 (Baldwin 1925) along with spreader snow plow "OU" sandwiched in between the two locomotives.

They have all stopped at the D&RGW Depot at Cumbres Pass Colorado on January 21 1949

480 parked in front of the Chama depot with the snow fighting equipment and cabooses coupled on behind. While No. 480 has been doing this No. 483 has been coupling onto eight tank cars that will make up the rest of the train. Those tank cars will be left at Cumbres for the freight train which will arrive from Alamosa tomorrow and the flanger will continue east, plowing out sidings with the wings on the Jordan Spreader. Chama, March 14, 1963

Excuse my ignorance, but when did the RG finish with steam on a commercial bassis and become a tourist line

According to the very recent CRP&A book "Rio Grande Steam Finale", the final revenue earning freight workings took place in late August 1968 as follows:-

Tuesday 27 August          Durango - Gato (return loco and caboose)

Wednesday 28 August    Durango - Chama and Alamosa - Chama

Thursday 29 August.       Chama - Alamosa and Chama - Durango

Saturday 31 August        Durango - Farmington - Durango

Victor Hand photographed both workings on the Thursday (and presumably everything else that week) but only shots of the westbound train appear in the book - the loco involved was 483. It isn't stated whether it had worked through from Alamosa or out and back from Durango.

The very last train to arrive in Durango from the east was a non-revenue equipment move from Alamosa on Friday December 6 1968.

The feed mill i s only here temporarily, as I wanted it in for our depot magazine, Bristol Temple Reads. Smaller industrial units will replace it and the background buildings.
