JZ Posted September 26, 2019 Author Share Posted September 26, 2019 (edited) A day off yesterday saw me working on a standard gauge combine to cut it down to narrow gauge proportions. The donor, a Bachmann Western Combine. I needed to reduce the width by 6mm, body height by 3mm and lower the roof by 2mm. The clerestory was as near as dammit, the right width, so I took 3mm from each side. While I was at it, I removed the rather ugly moulded on chimneys and will be replacing them with some from LaBelle Woodworking. I also took the lower portion of the roof. The van end was easy as I just had to take 3mm from each side and replace it. The saloon end was a tad more difficult, as I wanted to keep the window proportions. So they were cut out separately, filed down and replaced. 3mm was removed from the lower body and this now means that the windows are the same height from the bottom as my Blackstone and other passenger cars. Rather brutal close ups of the ends. Still to build a chassis, but I have parts from my LaBelle order to finish that and some bogies from Shapeways. I ought some of the Airfix Western set ones cheap back in the 1980s (underneath they're marked Bachmann). The two largest classes of loco'son the D&RGW Narrow Gauge lines and the most powerful narrow gauge loco's to operate in the northern hemisphere. The K was for miKado and the number was for the TE x 1000. Details here K-36 and K-37. Nine of the 10 K-36 survive and 8 are still operational. 8 of 10 K-37 survive, only one of which is operational, but another will soon be finished. The K-36 will be finished as one I travelled behind earlier this year and the K-37 as the Royal Gorge display loco, 499, but without the snowplow. This will give me a fleet of 6 steam loco's, with me wanting just a K-28 to complete my intended fleet. JZ Posted September 29, 2019 Author Share Posted September 29, 2019 Still no track down, but I have made a tentative start on the scenery. Blending 3D with 2D. Ready mixed plaster has been used on top of insulation foam, a technique I've used in the past, but this time I won't be covering everything in static grass and foam scatter. I have painted this with a Dulux tester pot that closely matches the red sandstone of the area, I have another couple of different colours as well. While the paint was wet, I sprinkled some fine sand, aquarium sand, and a little woodland Scenics 'turf'. Jb Some is going, but some will remain for a smaller S&D recreation in the loft. The setting will be Combe Down to Midford tunnels. No stations, very small goods yard. Usual method, for me anyway, PVA, lay track and ballast, then put weights on until set. One slight disappointment though, the rechargeable vacuum I bought 11 years ago has died. New one being picked up today, so I can get the excess ballast up and get a photo. Rails soldered to PCB sleepers that can be seen in the bottom left of above photo. The car lot will go here, but not laid out quite the same and a row of shortish trees will go along the baseboard edge. Probably adding a Nissen/Quonset hut next to the trees as a workshop. It was the announcement of the Heljan L&B loco's that whetted my enthusiasm. However early reports of poor running put me off a bit. The missing floor parts have been made up from 1.5mm plywood and the girder frame between stalls was made up from 4mm² stripwood. The door frames are also missing, but not much of a problem as I will be cutting the doors down in height and they will be fixed open. I will be putting some details inside, benches, cabinets and I have a lathe and pillar drill. Should I leave the roof loose? Maybe. It would make track cleaning in there easier, but with the heat differential between summer and winter in the shed, I worry about warping, so maybe pad on a stick would be the answer for that. I'll be using mesh from Ratio for the chain link that will go along here. Waiting to see how the card used for the Scalescenes.com tarmac settles before adding another piece. It won't be hanging over the edge! I will be extending the baseboard after I have finished scenery along the backscene. The building on the right is from Kibri. It was purchased for a previous layout, but not used. The intention was to have it as a wagon repair shop and may now resurrect it as this. Although a German protype, the architecture isn't too different from American style. Mmmm. Thoughts also turn to what to do behind the roundhouse. The road leads to a grade crossing. Still with no firm plan for the rest of the layout, I thought it best to get on with this part. I have decided to add a siding along a street to serve some industry. The reason being, I have a couple of kits from the late Jack Trollope's (Shortliner) estate, one of which is a low relief factory, and I wish to name it after him in some way and, of course, it will be rail served.
