RMweb Gold jcarta Posted June 22, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 22, 2020 (edited) What a glorious day, sun shining continuously so I spent the day in the garden doing a bit more on the rebuild. 8:30 this morning all the tools were moved to the bottom of the garden in readiness. I started to drill the holes through the scaffold poles as this usually is the longest task, so I done the next three poles only to find that I had drilled the holes in the wrong place, school boy error, so that was the first hour wasted as I had to re-drill new holes. Anyway, as the sun was shining over the yard arm I thought I give my mucca a call, Ray only to find out that he had a pre-arranged meeting to drop off a decoder to a colleague...... Hmmmm I'm thinking that he might be moonlighting but he did pop in this afternoon for a couple of hours to give me a hand, much appreciated as usual. Mind you I don't know where the time goes when we get together..... Anyway here's what was achieved today.... The scaffold poles will eventually be sprayed / painted once the tops have been put on. Anyway tomorrow will be another warm day so I will make use of it by doing the next uprights. Well off to have a soak ...... The beauty of it is that the posts won't rot! Excellent work Paul R Thanks Paul..... We actually got the idea from a chap on this site. The layout has been in situ for about 4 years but the boards were starting to go and the weather played havoc with the layout, personally I was getting fed up with trying to make things fit. After a chat with my mate, Ray (A very long chat I hasten to add) I decided enough was enough and took the plunge to rebuild the railway from the bottom upwards rather than trying to make the boards fit. Yes, you are right at least it won't rot but they are a pain to drill through, it will be worth it in the end. RMweb Gold jcarta Posted June 23, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 23, 2020 Another great day of fine weather Today we drilled a further 4 posts and fitted the height adjusters and what was once an incline has been levelled quite a bit, then I started cutting the braces so hopefully these will get fitted tomorrow once I have finished work.
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted June 23, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 23, 2020 Hi Jim, I am following your progress and thinking of using this same system for my proposed garden line. Cheers, Ade. 1
RMweb Gold jcarta Posted June 23, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 23, 2020 Cheers Ade So far I have enjoyed doing the woodwork and drilling with my trusted companion...... I have made a few mistakes on the way but nothing major and as we progress with the re-build I tend to sit on the decking admiring our handy work and then look to see if I can improve on it, I think to the annoyance of SWMBO. Feel free if you need any questions answered and I will do my best to clarify but looking at your man cave I think you might have it sorted. At the time when we were looking to run around the garden it would have meant digging up the flower beds and removing part of the decking to fit posts so hence why we went with scaffold poles. The MKI version was stable for the first 24 months then the weather got to it, so we were always chasing our tail to remedy issues, hence why I took the initiative to completely rebuild it..... I have to admit the framework is rock solid so looking forward to getting more done and eventually running the Pullmans Jim
Andrew P
Running Pullmans? Naaa nice bit of dirty freight does it for me Jim, non of this mamby pamby Hooligan filled Passenger stuff in the Pit of Doom, haha.
RMweb Premium Ray H Posted June 25, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 25, 2020 At least Jim knows that there'll be the odd kettle running around his garden when its all finished - none of these (blue) boxes on wheels. I'm waiting for an O gauge working loco washer so that I can install it on Jim's layout and replace the water with green paint - but don't tell Jim!

RMweb Gold jcarta Posted June 27, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 27, 2020 (edited) Yesterday we managed to get the section from leaving the garage and the run down to the first bend screwed in and all that remains to do here is screw the infills in place. We will leave the bends to last so we can get the curvature correct and flat and then it will be time for the tops to be measured up and cut to suit. I had to cover up this as the forecast was for a spot of rain but I will take another picture once it passes and the other picture is what use to be the incline, now reasonably flat. Isambard would have been proud of this....... Edited April 2, 2022 by jcarta
RMweb Gold jcarta Posted June 27, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 27, 2020 (edited) When the weather was a bit crap last week I started on one of the kits from Easy Build, this is a Dia 723 TPO stowage brake. As with all Easy Build kits these go together well but this one tests your patience a little bit more as the sides need to be spliced into sections and then doors fitted and at the same time maintaining that the sides need to fit the chassis. The sides come already marked where to splice, these can be cut through with a stanley knife.... Just be careful. I numbered all the side parts up as knowing my luck I would have got these around the wrong way . After filing each new doorway it was time to fit the doors and then offer it up to the chassis and to make the necessary required adjustments and then to leave overnight to cure. I think it will be late summer before we actually run any trains I'm afraid but it will be a date to look forward to. We have decided to give Knowmoor a new look since Dr Beeching has been & gone and this will give the operator more scope rather than just receiving and sending trains. Ayr Road sidings will be added to, again giving the operator a few more shunting abilities. In the meantime here's a little memento. RMweb Gold jcarta Posted June 28, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 28, 2020 (edited) Today I tackled the bogies for the TPO but I had to contact shawn as there was no instructions in the box as these differ from the usual MKI bogies These two have to be made to fit so there is some surgery required to enable this. So firstly I needed to put the spacer bars inside the bogie as shown below Lastly I had to cut the framework that attaches the bogie to the coach and the weld everything together Edited April 2, 2022 by jcarta
RMweb Gold jcarta Posted June 29, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 29, 2020 (edited) The TPO is starting to take shape but I didn't like the doors that came with the kit so I made some of my own. The original doors seemed to have a mind of their own as they would distort in the window area and they also looked extremely thick. I have also managed to give it a coat of light grey but a second coat will be given either tomorrow or Wednesday. The doors have been hand painted for now but the whole vehicle will get a blow-over with the spray gun. I have also made up a compartment for the guard but someone has decided to move in and plonk the feet up on his desk and probably nicked his paper... RMweb Gold jcarta Posted June 29, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 29, 2020 (edited) Today I managed to get out of work early so I gave my mucca a call to see if he was available as the weekend was a total washout. As usual he was up to give me a few hours so he walked round and we started on the bends and successfully completed both of them. We need to give the wood merchant a call tomorrow so we can order up a few more lengths to complete the skeleton structure, then we can move onto the tops. Excuse the mess around the garden, this will be cleared as we finish this part of the structure and the area can be returned to "GOB" as Andy Peter's has named it, Garden of Bloom..... Once this has finalised I will trim all the extra bits on the braces ... I have to admit it is a sturdy as hell and it's starting to look good...... RMweb Gold jcarta Posted July 3, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 3, 2020 (edited) No much has been happening with the layout over the past few days except Ray & I installed the infills into the carcass in readiness for the tops to get measured up and then put into place. The last few days have been spent clearing the garden up and sorting out the decking i.e. getting rid of the grey paint .... This is where we are as of yesterday.... Another load of paint stripper to get rid of the niggly little bits of grey paint. Edited April 2, 2022 by jcarta

RMweb Gold jcarta Posted July 5, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 5, 2020 (edited) Well the sun is trying to shine here so I will spend a few hours in the garden today even if it is just cutting the over hanging parts off the braces, at least that will be one job less later on when we start fitting the tops. In the meantime Ray has finished one of the single slips that will be used, only two more to go... Later on I will try and take a picture of the new Knowmoor track layout and post.
