Pop up adds on mobile - Fix pg 3 is change theme to default

The server software has probably been changed to pick up a different method of ad inserts. I would hope this is something an admin has the capability to turn off, or at least configure to show more relevant ads.

However, for those impatient enough to get rid of them, use an adblocker, or like me use Firefox with NoScript (which is available for both PC and Android). You can allow javascript from specified domains, so you can allow RMweb.co.uk, which lets its adverts through, but blocks the likes of Google's code, and all the other nasty little advert javascript files from who knows how many domains (which I find is at it worst with the commercial news sites). Doing this essentially stops the adverts, which are reading your browser configuration to figure out what adverts to send you.

My guessing is that the CSS (style sheet code) which is hiding the ads, is only working down to about 380px screen width, rather than 320px which would be the norm.

Andy’s working on it but as it only reared it’s head late last week today’s the first chance he’s had to look into it. There’s a header saying it’s got something to do with the testing new ways of showing adverts they are doing.

Plus he’s doing a guest appearance in Guildford on Wednesday so I guess limited office hours this week ;)

I suspect Andy's "office hours" are rather different to most folks concept of them.

True. From some comments here it seems many think the poor chap works 24/7 !

Getting whole screen pop ups now. It's really putting me off using the forum especially on a phone

As I've said several times we are working on it.

Found out that if I hold my phone in landscape mode rather than portrait I don't seem to get the ads??? Very odd

Yes, I suddenly started getting random whole screen pop-ups yesterday, they are only advertising google though.

Fortunately, the 'landscape orientation' thing works for with my i-pad, too.   It's a good work-around until the fix.

If the ads are targeted why am I getting them for talktalk? I have never looked at ISPs

Because targeting is not an exact science! They (Google ads) try, but ultimately fall back on an “anything is better than nothing” approach.

As as someone else mentioned earlier, you don’t have to see these, even while Andy works out what they want to do about them. I’ve installed the “AdGuard” app on my iPad and iPhone, and now see NO ads on RMW. Not the new Google ones, not the original railway related ones, not even the Gold Club ones

I believe the same app is available for android devices.

A better option for Android is "Free Adblocker Browser" is seems to be built around Chrome and works great. The problem with the Android version of AdGuard is you have to also download a supporting browser, may as well just download once ;)

Adverts!

We appear to be approaching the point adopted by US advertisers who belive it it a god-given right to shove their wares in your face whether you have any interest in them or not.  Recently, viewing RMweb on a tablet has become a penance, and on a mobile phone an impossibility due to large, intrusive ads being interpolated in the forum listing.

Ads at the top or bottom are ok, even if they're the random viagra ones that have "popped up" over the last week or so (until you've logged in...), but ads that hog half the screen while you're trying to scroll down to the forum you want are bl00dy stupid.  If this goes on, I'll be switching on the adblocker for RMweb, its currently switched off, but there's supporting through allowing adverts and there's the sheer insanity of the adverts currently being served up and getting in the way.

I wonder if any of these firms whose ads keep poping up have ever asked potential customers if they are more or less likely to buy from the ad, my answer would be not likely or something stronger. They are just annoying

A  minority will follow the link and that makes it worth their while. The majority of people who are inconvenienced or annoyed aren't on their radar.
