Very enjoyable show.

I took my wife with me for the first time to a show and she actually enjoyed it!

I just bought a selection of embossed brick paper, as with several new O gauge locos hitting the market later this year I need to save some pennies. My wife now wants to the buy the new Bachmann GCR OO gauge buildings to do a model of Ruddington which is my home village.

Sad news about the thefts.

Cheers, Ade.

Yes they did, and that was it. Any speculation after this isn't necessary or helpful and will be moderated if on here.

Whilst I appreciate speculation is no good, it may be useful to publicise the incident to the model railway community, as the sooner more folks know about it, the more they may be aware to look out for dodgy goods.

I know it's not the exact same scenario, but there was a railway shed break-in reported on here a couple of years back.

The information was immediately put into the local community via social media and a number of items were recovered quite quickly (and IIRC the perps were identified as well)..

Cheers,

Mick

I visited the show yesterday.  It was very, very good.

Two big regrets, well three.

1.  I didn't arrive early enough

2.  I shouldn't have spent so long riding up and down on the trains. :-)

3. Perhaps I should have gone for the two days.

I only got there at 11:30, that was an hour and an half missed opportunity.  As I'd never been to the GCR before (to my shame) I wanted to see the railway too, so that was more time not looking at the wonderful layouts.  Got chucked out with the rest at 5:00pm.  So perhaps two days next year?

The show was huge, see attached image.

Unfortunately, with the likes of Ebay and Gumtree it's nigh on impossible to spot out of the box RTR as being hookey; repainted/detailed and also kitbuilt stands a better chance if seen by the owner though.

I have found a few on eBay in the past where I've thought, "Oh really?".  If it's a Hornby starter loco/set, possibly spelled "Horby" and a very limited description using very generic language (thieves tend to be lazy, writing a description takes time and literacy), it is probably as described, just a no-longer-played-with child's toy.  Yes, it could be nicked from a toy shop but it's plausibly genuine.

If it's a £150 Bachmann loco described as "model locomotiv" - nothing else, possibly with damaged parts, photographed on a phone and asking £50, it's reasonable to assume it might NOT be genuine.  No-one buys a £150 loco as a child's toy; likewise no-one throws out the boxes for expensive locos and carries them in a carrier bag.

I hope these high-profile events don't create a sense of a worsening trend.  There has always been theft from model exhibitions/swapmeets; they are events with high value items and low security, which sadly will attract a tiny minority of the wrong people.  Sympathies to the traders affected, being robbed is a horrible feeling for anyone.

Just returned from a morning at the show which is fairly local to me.

It wasn't too busy - perhaps because of the weather, but there was absolutely no problem with the parking, for which they had reduced the cost to just £3.

I have been every year and my summary would be - excellent large show with the added spectacle of the preserved railway, but no cigar!

Why no cigar? - because on the one had there was no 'iconic', star layout present, nor on the other hand were there any of the sort of small, specialist traders who sell the bits and pieces that more serious modellers might want.

Result - beyond my admission and some lunch, I managed to spend just £2.00 !

Nevertheless, I shall go again.

...Or a wife/widow with no idea of the true value....perhaps the husband told her that's what it cost.  Anyone on here recognise that description ;)

A bit OT:    I overheard a story of a couple of guys who went to see  the widow of a vintage 0 Gauge collector (rare stuff, in vg/mint cond.).  Widow says "I threw away the boxes", along with "...and the wagons, because I didn't think anyone would be interested in those".  Turns out the "wagons" were the loco tenders....

The event looked to me aimed at families - take dad out for the Fathers Day weekend, ride on trains, see some model railways maybe buy a Flying Scotsman for junior.  I would also say the exhibition space wasn't full of traders, it was a nice mix and more towards the layouts than trade.

Also lots of N, if you want iconic there was Brinklow, Grosvenor Square and Wickwar (now with remotely driven road vehicles).

To me, one of the star layouts was the vintage 00-9 narrow gauge layout "Llareggub" based on Dylan Thomas novel "Under Milk Wood" built by Dave Rowe. It was one of the first layouts as you entered the show on the left exhibited by the Llanfair & Welshpool railway. I remember this layout from being in Railway Modeller in the 1970's and I was realy pleased to see it is still around.

Hi Adrian

I also remember it from the RM article and I had the pleasure to see it at first hand that and many of the layouts built by Dave and his wife Shirley

The two layouts I really liked were Exbridge Quay & Leighton Buzzard

Does anyone know what happened to them ?

Yes a sad day because of the theft.  I’ve found the atmosphere a bit different today; yesterday it seemed more relaxed with lots of visitors stopping for chats, today its been a bit more hectic.  I guess the difference being that visitors on Friday were mainly retired folk, while today its been more families and people who have to work Monday to Friday.  Glad I had two good friends to help with running Linden Grove, so I did manage a very brief look round the layouts at Quorn.  Have to say they are excellent with a good variety, so something for everyone. If you’ve not been yet, please do come along tomorrow and support the exhibition.

Nice to meet one very interested young visitor who spotted my shunter...

Yes, it a cut down 08 from the PH kit.  The young visitor had made one too. Here are a few pics of my layout, BRM staff were seen spotting on the platform end.

The imported 234 on test raised a few eyebrows.

While the large logo deltic seemed popular.

A big thanks to Tony Wright who did some work on one of my locos which has never run properly - it now runs well. Thanks too to the hard working volunteers providing the exhibitors brews and manning the bar - the mild was excellent.

Hope to see some of you tomorrow.

I wondered what the fudge that was on the bridge...

for “ retired folk” read “ shiftworkers “ in mine and my cohorts case !

Digitrains have given some info about some fairly spottable items on their FB page
