Caledonian
Can anyone confirm whether the LMS 1F 0-6-0 tanks hired for this undertaking were painted unlined black with WD markings - like the 3Fs which went to France in 1940 .
asmay2002
The 3Fs were taken into WD stock and had WD numbers. The 1Fs at Melbourne were in two groups: 1666,1708,1751,1788,1839(replaced by 1773),1890 were there the whole time and 1695, 1726, 1727 were on short loans. Tourret in "War Department locomotives" lists no WD numbers for any of these engines so it seems to me that they probably stayed in LMS livery. Certainly the coaching stock there stayed in LMS livery. 1

I am from near there and have been reading about it. I am considering doing something for this railway. I have a few books on it.
Caledonian
While the story is quite fascinating it turns out that just about everything running there was LMS stuff. The livery was the same and the only appreciable difference was that the 1Fs had second-hand Westinghouse pumps, which would make an interesting model in itself and probably upset some people, but I decided the overall picture wasn't going to be distinctive enough. It might well still happen, I still have the 1Fs and some stock to haul, but not yet.
