LNWR18901910
As the title suggests, I have been making custom wooden trains. I did that since I was a teenager as well as getting back into the hobby of model railways. I had a lot of childhood models mostly the Thomas wooden ones and the BRIO stuff, but I plan to sell off my wooden train models. However, I have a good mind to showcase some of the models I've done here in comparison with the Bigjigs models of the Black Five and Duchess of Hamilton models I have with me. Expect photos of the models, soon.
RMweb Gold The Johnster Posted May 11, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 11, 2019 (edited) You can never have too much wood, and you can never have wood too often... I have a vague future plan to scratchbuild a GW matchboarded auto trailer with real wooden planks, it's one of those 'modelling for fun when I've done all the work for the layout' projects that'll prolly never see the light of what passes for day in my railway room. I like using wood as a modelling material and don't do enough of it. It is one of those things that scales down perfectly and takes paint, weathering, or varnish in exactly the same way as the wooden thing you are modelling. It is easily workable and adaptable, an underrated material. Edited May 11, 2019 by The Johnster
LNWR18901910
These are the trains I was talking about. I have made some models of the Red Engine who tried to push Henry out of the tunnel and Henry in his old shape which I find intriguing. Up until Henry the Green Engine (Book 6), the engines had no numbers and were nice simplistic toy trains similar to how the original Bob the Builder series would look. Both these characters look almost like something you can draw on paper and translate into 3D models. This was something I have tried to recreate myself. I may do some more models like this and some rolling stock in tow. I have completed a Midland Railway 2511 Class 2-6-0 and some Midland Railway clerestory coaches respectively as a set which I intend to set up in a stylized wooden book for display/storage purposes. I am currently working on an LNWR 19" Goods 4-6-0 in LMS days and I have thought about making a Southern Railway Q Class 0-6-0 model one day. Let me know your thoughts on my models! My painting skills have improved considerably overtime.
RMweb Gold phil_sutters Posted July 7, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 7, 2019 I am not quite sure why I have hung on to this wooden carriage. My Dad bought it in a job lot back in the early '60s I think, so it is probably the sentimental value. I have Exley in my head as its maker, but I think it is probably not up to their standard. More likely to be from either CCW, Ratio or Kings Cross
