Alex Hi Alex, I'm not completely sure; I'm no expert on GWR coaching stock and only have the second Auto Trailer book by John Lewis - I really need the first one! The first trailer, directly behind the locomotive, might be W157W, which was allocated to the Tavistock auto workings from March 1956 - September 1957. If you look at the diagram below, it looks very similar - cab paneling, window position and roof ventilators; however, I might be barking up the wrong tree and am very happy to be proven wrong! Here is a link to a photograph of 1408 and W157W at Tavistock and a second of the same pairing at Yelverton on the same day. For me, this will be a signature pairing once I finally get round to working on Horrabridge. Blacksmith's (now owned by Cooper Craft) used to make this auto trailer, A26. Or, it might be W51W, which was a diagram P and also assigned to the branch between 1956-57. The second one though I'm really not sure about; however, if we call our resident GWR coach expert @chrisf (and I know he hates being tagged like this, so apologies in advance Chris!) he might be able to shed a bit more light on the photo. Hope this is of help! I'd certainly like to know what they are - do we have a date for the photo? Its has to have been taken before the closure (or removal) of the Princetown branch, as the starter signal on platform 3 is still present. Best wishes, Nick.

chrisf
Nick and Alex If anyone tells you that all GW auto trailers look the same, tell them to ** ***** and ********! The one nearest the camera looks to be a Diagram T, of which there were 6 [75 - 80]. Nearly all wooden trailers had pairs of droplights somewhere on the bodyside but these don't. I will send a PM with a broadside photo, for I don't want anyone at Domestic Duck Books accusing me of a flagrant breach of copyright. You may think that this is a teeny weeny one but I could not possibly comment. Vacancy, to be filled immediately: GW coach expert. Tolerance of Twitter would be an advantage. chrisf
I should have mentioned that they were built with gangways at the non-driving end. The balance of probability is that the one on the thread is no, 75. Chris
RMweb Gold Brinkly Posted August 14, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 14, 2020 Brilliant Chris! Thank you. I had no idea that one went down the Launceston branch. If only I had a time machine! Best wishes, Nick.
Popular Post wiggoforgold
4658 on an up Launceston-Tavistock junction freight enters Yelverton. 4588 departs Yelverton with a down Plymouth - Tavistock passenger train. 4658 waits at the yelverton up starter with the frieght for Tavistock Junction. Another 45xx has joined the fleet. This one will be 4574 in plain green. I'll do my usual details, plus new safety valve cover, whistles and Gibson bogie whees as per Brinkly's mods explained earlier in this thread. The current 4574 will aquire a new identity. RailWest
Very nice, but..I'm puzzled why the Up Starting has a 'Rule 55 exempt' diamond sign? I've never seen one in any photo there, nor is there any obvious reason why one would be provided.

I just took the signal out of the box this morning before i took the photograph, and haven't done anything to it yet. I was sure the post was white and WR never got round to repainting it. I checked some photographs to confirm my suspicion. I think it looks better in white anyway. RMweb Gold Harlequin Posted August 17, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 17, 2020 According to "GWR Signalling Practice": The first tubular post signals were erected at a number of sites in 1927 for assessment and comparison with the old pattern masts. Thereafter they gradually extended across the system. (There! That makes up for my late arrival on the Diagram T autocoach train!) 1
Popular Post wiggoforgold
Platform construction underway at Yelverton. The platform framework is from mounting board. The buildings stand on card plinths to bring them to the correct height. The footbridge straddles the baseboard join to disguise it and will be removable for transportation. Popular Post wiggoforgold
A few more pictures of progress so far. Lights have been installed behind the proscenium, and I'm currently working on the platforms and trees at the northern end of the site. Later today I'm hoping to do a few experiments with vegetation. Popular Post wiggoforgold
At the southern end of Yelverton station, I've tried to model a stretch of moorland. It isn't really moorland at this point, but there is moorland about half a mile to the south, on the edge of Yelverton and on to Roborough Down, although the moor proper is to the north. My moorland is a bit of artistic licence. Walks on Kit Hill and Caradon Hill (I know, Cornwall, but we are living with lockdown here) gave an opportunity to study the types of vegetation, and time to think about how to model them. Bracken starts with a patch of 6mm static grass fibres of a brownish shade. To add to the variety of the vegetation, I then inserted some small pieces of sea foam in to the fibres. The whole was then given a coat of hairspray, and reddish brown scatters were sprinkled over the top. To model gorse, I used pieces of hanging basket liner, teased out a bit to separate the fibres. Some of the larger fibres were removed. The spiky appearance of gorse was obtained by spraying the hanging basket liner with hairspray, and coating with 4mm static grass. The whole was then lightly sprayed a greyish colour. This was then sprayed with hairspray, and sprinkled with a dark green scatter. It was fixed in place on the layout by spraying the area it was to be in with still more hairspray, and dropping the "gorse" into place by picking it up with a couple of cocktail sticks. Temptation to push it in to place with fingers must be resisted, as the teased out effect of the fibres is easily lost if it is pushed too hard in to the hairspray. Rhodedendrons are made from pieces of sea foam. Several pieces are glued together by the stems to form a bush. I then sprayed the bush a dark grey, although observation of the prototype suggest a reddish brown may be sutiable as well.. The painted bush is then sprayed with hairspray, and sprinkled with dark green scatter. For a bush in bloom, a further coat of hairspray is followed by a dusting of pink scatter. The completed bushes are "planted" by making a small hole where the bush is to be and dipping the stem in PVA before putting it in the hole.
