Formerly Round and Round a new beginning - now CHIRM

Recommended Posts

First show since Jan 2020 at Leeds this weekend. Good to see layouts operating again and catch up with people. Picked up another fork lift to convert and end up in the timber yard as the current forklift looks little under powered.

Weathered the hut and will have a side door added before siting opposite the metal workshop.

Had hoped wife would bring back a bottle of the real Frankfurter sausages from her Frankfurt visit last week but it seems all I have got is her heavy German cold so a quiet morning completing a second hand NKP 52ft 6 in gondola. Made more interesting with the instructions are in German.

Found the missing windows and doors for the garage and completed the painting of the brick work for the garage. Last image shows fuel truck at Loco spur and sectional hut providing additional space at the metal workshop. A side door was added.

A review of all the stock needed for CHIRM has shown that apart from a couple more short length flatcars then need no more stock! So now looking to upgrade some of the models and cull bad runners that seem determined whatever modifications made refuse to run well.

Did not realise it has been so long since posting but lots of running time in 2022 in the coolness of the garage.

rationalisation of the stock has taken place and have managed to purchase some missing stock.

50ft flat car completes the quarry stone car. The box suggests it was a limited run version.

Reefers replace a couple that were not likely to be seen even on an imaginary layout.

I knew of only one other modeller who had a Monon layout, I am sure there must be more but strange not having seen any Monon stock there has been a number of items. Today took delivery of something I have never seen ever since collecting and modelling and that is Monon passenger stock.

Con Cor. Looks like CHIRM will be moving as an imaginary depot on the last passenger route that Monon ran. The last train ran in 1967 and I have stock now to run behind my high bonnet C420.

looks like the set dates back to the early 1980s as a flyer for Model Railroader at 3 dollars 95 was in the box.

There have been quite a few models. Here are results of a ‘historical’ search on the Walthers site:

https://www.walthers.com/catalogsearch/advanced/result/?name=&sku=&scale[]=20789&road_name[]=20701&road_name[]=20197&second_level[]=20864&discontinued=on

There are a few on e-bay - three at the moment. Maybe a longer train 🙂?

@enginelane is right - I’ve also noticed a sudden influx of preowned Monon HO items appearing on a retailer’s website recently, though I’d not appreciated the passenger cars were still in unused condition as these seem to be.

When I saw them, this layout was the one I thought of, as I don’t know of any other Monon layouts in the UK either*.  Nice to know these have found a good home, Keith.

(I did buy kits for three Monon 2-bay hoppers and a caboose a couple of months back, but I don’t think they were from the same collection and I’m not aiming to model the Monon specifically)

* The retailer I know buys collections direct in the States too these days, so doesn’t just source pre-owned items locally.

Having a look at the carriages in more detail and it seems Set A contains carriages and B more specialised stock such as diner and sleeping car and baggage car. 4th car is an observation type. There are no interiors but with modelling licence they will fit the bill.

Broken handset has reduced running- sticky commonly used keys causing commands not to function reduced running on layout. However recently picked up sound equipped F3 a and b units in what seem to be near mint condition means really need to find a solution
