Popular Post Locksley
Hi all, thought I should finally start my first thread on the forums after lurking for a while. I've been into model railways all my life, and have been involved with the Sheffield Model Railway Enthusiasts for a good chunk of it too. More recently I've swayed towards plastic kit building, aircraft, armour etc, and have written a number of articles for various UK modeling publications but I now have a house and a bit more space, and after a perusal of Phil Parker's excellent blog, I was sufficiently inspired to get back into railway stuff. My slightly longer term plans are to make a shelf layout based on C.F Booth's scrapyard, just down the road from me in Rotherham, mainly cos I can pretty much run what the hell I like on it, but I figured an ideal starting point to ease myself back in would be a Scalescenes boxfile layout, loosely based on some neglected corner of a fictional Sheffield steelworks. I also managed to dig out my now at least 12 year old Hornby J94 which has had a complete strip down, degrease, respray, detail up and weathering, and I have some nameplates on the way from Narrow Planet. I've also reset the back-to-backs, shimmed the main axles and spur gear to remove some of the slop, and added some small bolts through the motor mounts and lower saddle to clamp the motor down more securely after the original screw holes disintegrated. The model now runs probably better than it ever did, which is surprising as I once accidentally kicked it across my bedroom when I was a kid. On a Gaugemaster Combi it creeps along beautifully. The pictures are pretty much where the build is at now, though I did manage to get a surprisingly successful fiddle yard casette built last night, and I also have a Hornby Sentinel in bits on the bench awaiting a respray. The Forklift is the whitemetal kit from Ten Commandments, as are the pallets and Gas bottles , all of which make a huge difference to the look of the overall model. You'll have to excuse the mostly arty farty shots, I'll get a few more general photos soon. Edited May 31, 2019 by Locksley tags 28

The Sentinel is a cracking model, I'm dying to get it back on the layout as I haven't even run it properly yet.
Popular Post Locksley
Hi guys, I got the Sentinel finished off over the weekend. Very pleased with the result, in fact I think it may be one of my best weathering jobs I've done. I filled in the gap between the plastic valance and the chassis casting, as well as replacing the side boards with handrails and drilling out the lifting eyes. The loco was primed with Mr Color Black, then sprayed with RLM yellow before some post shading with a lighter mix to simulate fading. The rust patches were added with Humbrol 173 dabbed on with a torn sponge, and then refined further with a very fine brush, before heavy use of oils to add rainmarks, dust, grime and rust streaking. Popular Post Locksley
My dad called round on Saturday and brought some of his rolling stock to pose, so you'll have to excuse a few more arty shots lol. We also stuck his Bachmann 37 on as well, I don't think you'd get much shunting done with it though, it practically fills the entire thing, though you may just get away with something like a 20/24/25/26 kind of size. 30
sb67
Just found your thread, love the boxfile! I got one for xmas but yet to build it, your pics have given me some inspiration. Did you add any additional detail or weathering to it? Steve.

It's plenty of work but a lot of fun to assemble. No extra detailing as such yet, aside from the pallets/FLT/gas bottles and stuff, the structures are pretty much 'out of the box' (or printer). I have given everything a few blasts with the airbrush using mostly Tamiya Brown and Vallejo Khaki so far, focussing more on the join between the buildings and the ground, and then an overall mist of matt varnish, all of which improves the look even further. Not that it looks bad without it though.
steve1
It's not difficult to tell you have milmod experience, just by looking at the weathering. Excellent work and I will keep an eye on this one. Maybe you should be doing the boxfile demo at the Midland Small Layout show on Saturday instead of me! steve
Jerry1975
Very nice layout, atmospheric and well detailed. Jerry. 1
south_tyne
Absolutely stunning! The weathering, colours and overall balance and composition of the scene are absolutely superb. Highly impressed and looking forward to seeing more. 1

RMweb Gold Kevin Johnson Posted June 6, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 6, 2019 Fantastic boxfile layout with great modelling throughout and weathering. 1
Popular Post Locksley
Added a few more sections to the layout over the weekend. I also realised I bought some cheap clearance xmas decs last year which had a prewired string of LEDs in them, ideal for lighting buildings, so that's exactly what I did 24 3
RMweb Gold tomparryharry Posted June 11, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 11, 2019 You only need a waft of Bovril, and the smell of sintered steel. And, just a tune or two from Slade, playing in the pub in the background. Very, very atmospheric. Nice! Just noticed the leant-up pallet as well. Top notch. "Yow aurrite, kidda?" "Just going over to Persher (Pershore) Rowd" I'm seriously impressed! Ian.
Spotlc
As Ian said above! This really is top notch stuff - the Sentinel in particular is setting a standard of realism that would be hard to match! Bravo! Cheers, Mike 1
marc smith
Don't worry about the photos being "arty farty" @Locksley - they're great pics Really nice looking layout, and great progress on it. The Sentinel looks superb too More photos are always welcome too. The buildings look great - who needs loads of space for a layout? EDIT: This is just crying out for further box files to be added - to extend the scene whenever you want, and as much as you want..... south_tyne
Locksley, this really is superb! It's giving me some ideas for something similar in 7mm scale....... can't wait to see more of this stunning little diorama. Cheers, David 3

Popular Post Locksley
So, my dad and I treated ourselves to an Anycubic Photon resin DLP 3D printer last week This thing is just incredible, and quite literally opens up a world of possibilities when it comes to modelling. I've just about got my settings dialled in for almost perfect print using Elegoo Grey resin so I've drawn up and printed a few replacment/enhancement parts for both the boxfile and my locos. 14 11
RMweb Gold Kevin Johnson Posted June 17, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 17, 2019 Hi Locksley it’s amazing what can be achieved by using a 3D resin printer, like you mentioned it open a lot of possibilities when modelling. The parts you have printed look great and when painted up and weathered will look even better. 1
south_tyne
Sorry to repeat myself but the colouring and weathering are simply stunning - honestly, some of the best I have ever seen. That austerity tank looks so realistic. Fabulous stuff
RMweb Gold john new Posted June 17, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 17, 2019 Are the plates on Handsworth bespoke order etches or photo-prints? (With apologies if I've missed that being mentioned earlier in the feed)
sb67
Th 3d stuff looks amazing Locksley, takes the model to a whole new level, I love the building and the light above the door. Steve.
Jerry1975
I echo all the positive comments, it's brilliant and the weathering on the loco is top notch, well done. Jerry.
MrDuck
I can remember seeing the scale scenes boxfile advertised in one of the railway magazines and for the price it’s a bargain. Your boxfile layout is looking great with some nice weathering. Your Sentinel is looking fantastic.
