This is a fantastic layout.  So evocative of the real thing!

Please can you tell us the width of the platforms and what products you used for the great station canopies which run the length of the platforms?

Thanks again for all the great photos.

David, in New Zealand (but ex-Manchester).

The layout has been taken out of operation temporarily for building renovation work and some work on the track too.  When it returns to operation, it will be back in late 1950s steam era.

Fantastic layout!

Just out of intrest, are the station platform lamp posts bought or are they scratch built?

Cheers

Knightwing (if I recall correctly) white metal.  They are looking a bit knocked about after around 10 years in situ and could do with straightening out and re-fixing in place.

Thanks, really like the detail of the station name on them

Here are some more images, including several of a rebuilt Patriot I bought second hand on Ebay, which looks good and runs well.

Cross-country unit and Ince Castle with Fairburn 2-6-4 tank on LMS non-gangwayed stock in the background:

56XX tank - which reminds me that I must catch up on the past 10 years of dirtying steam models:

This is one of the old Bachmann Modified Halls and, to me, looks better than the new model because it has the correct shape running plate at the front, which, to me, is a critical error on the new model:

I needed more fiddleyard space for DMUs so I have built a small extension. I had no idea so many good DMUs would appear when I planned the layout 19 years ago:

Latest output from the Brian Kirby works are three rebuilt Bachman RUs.

First a conversion to a RB(S) (Diag 27):

34962983743_01025fef08_b.jpgP1070653am by Robert Carroll, on Flickr

This is an RU rebuilt to include a full buffet counter.  The other side was not changed on the prototype although this one has been repainted:

34962983853_3b85f8dab3_b.jpgP1070654am by Robert Carroll, on Flickr

An RU rebuilt with Comet sides to become a Diag 17 RF:

34962983383_76a2055f33_b.jpgP1070655am by Robert Carroll, on Flickr

34932241984_c5839e5b96_b.jpgP1070656am by Robert Carroll, on Flickr

Finally, an RF converted to include a buffet counter (Diag 26):

34962983213_9178fc1d93_b.jpgP1070658am by Robert Carroll, on Flickr

I might paint the whole of the window behind the buffet counter orange as photos often show the curtains closed on this window.  Later, some Diag 26 were further rebuilt to eliminate the window.

This Diag 26 has the curtains drawn most of the way over but not quite all:

The bridge over the station throat that I started building about nine years ago has moved on a bit too.  Currently only held together with Blu-tack until I sort out the road surface, in about another ten years:

Hi Robert

I'm only catching up after a while of missing some of your more recent posts.  I am amazed at how well your layout handles the transitions between eras, and such beautiful motive power and coaching stock too, especially those conversions.

Cheers

Tony

I have now moved the layout on to the early 1960s.  Here are some photos from today.

Duke of Gloucester makes its debut. Unfortunately, it is something of a dog of a runner, its slow running and pulling away being poor in comparison to other Hornby models with decent chassis, such as their Britannia.

A few photos from today:

Dapol limited edition D1009 Western Invader - something of a problematic runner but after some fiddling about it now manages to remain on the track. I still think Dapol's headcodes rather let down the appearance but the overall shape is better than Heljan's although I have found Heljan's to be the better runners:

Robert, superb layout, such realism displayed.

For me, the loco lamps seem to be very prominent, but that's me being ultra picky!

I love seeing the pictorial updates on this thread.

Karl

Thanks, I agree about the lamps. They are the Springside ones, which are over-scale. If I can find better ones at reasonable cost, I might change them, but there are rather a lot to change!

Hi Robert

I recently purchased a number of LNER lamps from Lanarkshire Models and they are superb, fine scale, including the handles. They also have LMS ones.

Cheers

Tony
