New Bachmann Scenecraft engine shed:

It's a bit bigger than I thought it would be and only just fits. It's also designed for a wider track spacing so the vents don't quite line up with the engine chimneys but it seems to look OK, which is just as well in view of the price.

Latest addition to the fleet - Hornby have not made the Brush Type 2 in green with no yellow panel but with 4-character headcodes so I painted out the yellow panel on this one. Railmatch BR loco green is a very good match for the shade Hornby used.

Just found this thread, amazing!  I look at layouts like this and others and think to myself will I ever be that good.

I have had help. The layout was built (boards, track, ballast, wiring, platforms, control panels) by Brian Kirby, who also improved a few of the locos in the photos, including the green 37 although I think I did the dirtying (can't remember as it was years ago).

Just realised I omitted to copy across one of the photos - my 2H makes its debut:

I would have much preferred a 3H and I think Kernow would have done better with sales not worse had they done a 3-car set. There were only four 2-car ones in the blue era and for much of the green era too. I eventually gave in and bought one and it is a very good model. The trainspotter is clearly looking at something more interesting in the opposite direction.

Lovely Robert. Can't agree with you more re the 3H. When the price dropped I relented and bought one, but would have bought 2x3H as these were a common formation on the Pompey-Bristol services in the mid 1970s.

Hi

Photobucket has changed its terms so my images no longer display. I'm not prepared to pay what they want and will seek to restore images another way.

EDIT: moving across to Flickr but each image link needs to be changed individually so it might take a while to restore them all.

Some photos from today:

Peaks await departure:

Contrast in Bachmann 25s - the nearer one is their improved model with wire handrails and deeper cab front windows. The rear one is from the first batch they made. It's a rather dated model by today's standard but if a new one were to appear replacing my existing fleet would be expensive.

Station scene:

This was the first Bachmann 25 in my fleet, purchased 24 March 2001 at Alexandra Palace show for £45.50 (coaches cost more than that today). It was 25 279 until fairly recently when backdated. The boiler compartment grille should not be plated over for the number carried but I could not find any others in this style without the D prefix and with emblems on the cab sides. Could do with another wash over with weathering colours I think.

08s. Both fairly early Bachmann models, long before Hornby's one appeared. So far as I can recall, neither Hornby nor Bachmann have done a blue pre-TOPS 08. The blue one is a backdated 08 623.

D163 departs. This Peak was still in economy green with small yellow panels in 1972.

Cravens unit in the station:

The body of this 31 is Lima and it has a Hornby Railroad chassis. It began life many years ago as a blue TOPS one, which I renumbered 20 years ago. It was consigned to the 'withdrawn' box for many years until resuscitated fairly recently. The Railroad motor is not great as it's geared for fast running but it's better than no pre-TOPS blue 31. A variant Hornby has not produced.

47 and 45 on shed:

45 awaits departure as a spotter checks his book:

Saturday was the final day in early 1970s for the layout, until the next cycle. Here are some views.

Freights pass - Heljan 47 and Bachmann 43:

Lengthy van train behind another Bachmann 43. I will get round to weathering the stock one day:

This 31 was rescued from the scrapyard. An old Lima body on a Hornby Railroad chassis. Needs a feedback controller to run acceptably:

Station approaches:

Bachmann 24 - I don't yet have any SLW ones:

24057653358_056427a22f_z.jpgP1080197m by Robert Carroll, on Flickr

Another rescue job. The body is Lima and was repainted by Western Respray Services in the 1990s. It's now running on a chassis from an old Bachmann 40:

Class 33/1 and 4TC:

37909345811_133f2ce3d1_z.jpgP1080194m by Robert Carroll, on Flickr

A line-up of Class 25s. I'm not a fan of the rather dated Bachmann model but nothing better has appeared yet. On the left is D7667 which I think is the only one Bachmann has done in pre-TOPS blue. Next is another rescue job. D5233, one of only five late body style 25s with steam heating. This was bought to provide a chassis to go under an old Hornby body and spent around 13 years in store after the Bachmann 25/1 appeared. I resuscitated it and reunited the original body with its chassis and gave it full yellow ends. Next is 5283, which was backdated from TOPS. Then finally another one in green with full yellow ends, from the phase when Bachmann used a yellow that was much too orange in shade.
