D6501 didnt last long but that sound decoder is very realistic, another split gear this one on an axle, luckily i see that Ultrascale make replacements. David the owner was very helpful but in the office so wont know how many he has in stock till Monday but at least someone makes them. I bought two secondhand ones off Ebay last year and  the other one has all four axle gears split.

Checking out my Heljan Falcon that has a totally different drive arrangement, cant work out how you get the headcodes out though.

Just starting to paint the sides of the rail and the chairs dark brown, thats a tedious job and does my neck no favours at all. Done about a third of the large shed so far and then my other half appeared with tea and home made cakes!

Is the Class 33 a Heljan model?

Jim

It does Jim but toothache isnt helping and dentist not open till week tomorrow, still only had it for a month and sure others must be in the same boat.

Yes the 33 is one of the early models and i have modified the roof and other bits which are detailed in my Mr Cuttles workbench.

I trust you've managed to get the toothache sorted.

You'll know that Jim is rebuilding the outdoor section of his layout and is following some of your ideas. He recovered one of the boards from the original scheme and found that it had rotted through where we had fitted a Cobalt point motor under the board immediately below a point. The large hole required for the point motor's operating rod no doubt played its part in allowing water ingress. We weren't using WBP ply then.

Consequently we're planning to minimise the number of holes made in the new boards. I note you appear to have droppers off each rail length with the requisite holes through the baseboard top surface. Have you taken any steps to stop the rain percolating down through your holes or are you hopeful that the WBP classification will keep problems away?

Out of interest how are you operating your points on the open section? We're hoping to use servos but haven't come up with a solution for mounting them where they can be easily accessed (but out of  direct sunlight) and without having more holes through the felt and baseboard top.

Ray,

Yes toothache reduced with heavy drilling and temporary crown, our dentist is dressed like a surgeon, full mask with twin air filters etc etc but she is very good! Seems another one next to it is suspect too!!

Was that Jim reclining on the sunbed, sorry track bed? What a a happy chappy he looks!

Re water going through, i use a hybrid polymer, various brands, Soudal or Evo Stik do equivalent called The Dogs B*ll*cks, its  clear in a tube and its waterproof, you can paint it and seal with it. It skins in fifteen minutes and fully cured in twenty four hours.

On the second half of the layout he used marine ply, nothing to report apart from a touch of The Mule or roller coaster effect on one section but it doesnt affect running!  On thefirst half covered in WPB , i did seal the edges with a blowtorch  with diluted waterproof pva. The WPB has warped a bit height wise and rolling stock coming uncoupled [ i use kaydees] so i have packed under the track with small pieces of 030 plasticard, its working so far.

Only have two points outside atm both powered by Cobalt Analogue motors, completely separate from the main dcc power to the tracks, i scratchbuilt two plasticard boxes covered in embossed brick effect plasticard and also i built two from 4mm marine ply as standbys in case these fail. Probably replace one with a signal box and maybe a rectangular disused water tower to cover the other.

I use stainless steel or brass screws and will seal around the wiring with the sealant. Also using alarm cable as we are adding detection with LEDs from the mimic board.

The design of the covers came from a GOG member Chris Spring who has a couple on his garden railway called Chelagasa.

Regards

Alan

Thanks Alan.

I'm afraid to admit that the person attempting to climb down off the baseboard is me - Jim was taking the picture.

We mounted digital Cobalts under the layout previously and got at least a couple of failures each winter. DCC Concepts indicated that outdoor was outside the spirit of their life time warranty which is partly why we're hoping to use servos. We've also decided that we'll follow the twelve inches to the foot chaps and have some of the points hand worked and we'll be installing frog juicers on each point to facilitate that.

It is interesting to note that some of your wiring around the points remains on the surface.

Ray,

Maybe you were testing the ridigity of the boards?

Thats interesting re the Cobalts, not had much contact with folk so its all trial and error for me, you mention servos, not sure what they are any particular make?

I think the point wiring will have to be improved as the weather will destroy it for sure, may go underneath or in a small conduit.

Work continues, now finally finished the parcel depot apart from some more furniture etc to add. I changed the openings to roller shutter doors using sheets from ModelRailwayScenery.com. which are quite effective.

My loco shelter that i built some fifteen years ago has had a refresh with new roof and i have built a pit under it.

Just finishing a bridge at the far end of the shed by ulitising part of the plate section that was in my other shed on the original garden layout.

Had some delaminating on a section outside so used some galvanised plate and stainless bolts to bring it back together. I used some small pieces of copper sheet under the track to level it up.

Now got a monitor in the shed and several cameras around the layout making it easier to spot issues.

Cant upload any photos atm

Finally able to do a bit of modelling but still not well.

Got a urinary tract infection back in January, pumped full of antibiotics, three different ones with side effects, no energy or appetite. Now got prostate issue and had to go private to get a hosp appointment. Seems there is blood in my urine , awaiting  further tests with camera etc. Joys of being over seventy!

I bought two inspection saloon projects last year from Mike Cole both in need of work. One is DS1 and the other a conversion from a 50ft kitchen car..

Sorry to hear about your health issues Alan and I hope they will be sorted soon ...

Glad to see you are getting back into your modelling, these two are real beauties, hopeful we'll see them running on the layout in the coming weeks

Maybe sometime, making a low relief plate bridge and retaining walls for other end of shed. Also  as you can see  behind the inspection saloons i have scratch built  a small low relief factory with yard in front.

This will be a small garage specialising in Jowett car repairs. I had several Javelins in the sixties.

Added to that Jim i sprained myself there about a month ago pushing supermarket trolley now got pain in groin and testicle and cant walk much. All new to me never had any issues like this before, had a slipped disc back in 1989 and the pain is similar.

Working on Heljan Falcon i bought cheap couple of years ago, different drive train seems ok, very heavy chassis and had to reroute the wiring as it goes over the holes where the screws to hold the body on go through.

There's nothing worse than being in some sort of pain, it just puts a downer on everything.....

It's good to hear that you are working on Falcon, another loco to see running around, shortly I hope.

Thanks Jim, even if i can do an hour here and there got to keep pushing.

Trying to get a sound chip for it from Cliff Williams, seems that he has been overwhelmed with orders. He does one that he has tweaked, there is footage of it on Over Peover on Youtube.

I see you are going into kettles - shame on you, i always thought you were so cool!!:dirol_mini:

I have two kettles that I own ....... Sssssh I like to keep a low profile.... Those two on my page belong to the club and were only visiting my railway as Ray had to put some sound chips into them and set them up for stopping at the signal..

I am definitely a good old diesel man :agree:

Doesnt seem to be any new larger RTR steam locos on the horizon, would love a Bulleid pacific, any variant.

They've knocked nearly £200 off the price of the LNER ones and 21 types still have more than 10 in stock. I'll be surprised if we get anything else!

Just started stripping down my second Darstaed  corridor Mk 1. This is a BSK, the seating is too high in the corridor variants and there is no guards compartment at all in this one. Strange as the BSO has one?

I like to remove the steps from the ends at the same time and number the coaches. Pity the glazing isnt removeable, it goes the full length and height of the sides and grips like you know what to a blanket!!
