Operation Dark Winter - HO scale Micro Layout.

@298 - I'm definitely going to balance it out - this initial test was just done by plugging in the reel and dangling a strip over the top of the APA box. I need to get the scale street lighting wired up and installed first as a counter balanace, then I'm going to start removing blue LEDs from the strip used to light the layout until I reach a happy medium.

It might be worth you trying LM2596 buck step down DC modules instead of plain resistors, as these allow fine control and the indicated voltage is a good reference. I use them on BH for the various wiring voltages and wouldn't be without them as you can also link all of the -ve's together  (although I have had one fail).

It's been a while since the last update, as I've been battering away at the list of tasks left to do on Op Dark Winter.

As it stands now, I'm about finished ready for the Mansfield show. Just the resistors and the battery pack for the street lamps left to wire up, as well as few cosmetic bits and a little bit more on the scenery. I've also been repainting a 44T switcher and patching out and weathering some freight cars.

I have wired up the blue lights on the layout, though they don't really show up well in the photos - it appears MUCH more blue in the photos than in reality, here we are. The first shot is in a dark room, the second is in a fully lit room. In the lit room I think it adds enough light to be an interesting presentation feature for the layout. :)

A quick before and after for you all - Bachmann 44T - ATSF to something a little more generic. Still a fair bit to go to finish this off, but I'm pretty happy with it. This is about 4 and half hours work so far, all brush painted with acrylics. :)

Not to sure tbh, if I can get the darn thing to install for the second time, (installed it through Epic, now uplay insists I install again through them,) nearly 60GB at a time is no fun, even on my supposedly superfast broadband.
I figured I'd look around the game and see if a scene presents itself, much as you have here.

From what I remember, the only places in the second game that feature railroads are the Southwest district - just north of Jefferson Plaza and the NASA HQ, and Dark Zone South - if that helps?

Now Warlords of New York has been added to the game, which added in Lower Manhattan as a new game map, there's a few sections of that which feature NY Transit cars, particularly a control point up against the Brooklyn Bridge called Derail - you can guess why it's called that. :D

Very smooth in operation when I had a little go at the Mansfield Show last weekend :)

I'm really surprised at how well it runs Ian, to be honest. It was running much better than the sound fitted locos I brought with me - they had the occassional stutter on dirty track but this little beauty just kept going. :)

Mansfield show was excellent as always, thanks Ian for the invite. :)

Here are a few photos of the overall setup at the show, as well as a shot of Ford operating the layout which shows why we always set our layouts up at table height - too many times at shows I've seen wheelchair bound patrons who simply can't see half the exhibits on show as they are displayed much too high.

Sorry mate I'm only just catching up on this thread after seeing the layout posted on another thread, and thinking how ironic the back-story is now... ;)

But this caught my eye. You brush painted that yellow, Dan?? That is utterly awesome!! What make & shade of yellow? I've been trying Tamiya flat yellow recently, & like most yellows in my experience, it's been a pig to get on nicely - far too thin a pigment, in a thick medium, that dries too quick & goes streaky & lumpy. I'm only trying to do the cab roof of one of my Atlas Plymouths - How hard can it be???!!! :banghead:

Would like to know what you've used here. Top weathering, too! Does HO seem teeny-tiny after O.? ;) :D

Hi Jordan.

Citadel Base colours - an ancient pot of Iyandan Darksun, with a top coat of Averland Sunset.

I'm not sure Darksun is still available, it's an oooooold paint. But any of the Citadel Base colours would work fine. They have a high pigment count in the paint so are designed for one or two coats to cover a surface.

Games Workshop's entire Citadel paint range is superb, they've really upped their game in the past 15 years.

And yeah, HO is TINY! :D

Also, on the subject of the Atlas Plymouth...

Only just started, but it's getting there. :)

The shell for this one was done with automotive paints from a rattle can, but the chassis frame is brush painted in the same way as the 44T.

Hi Dan, thanks for the paints advice, & nice start on the Plymouth! I really, really ought to weather my fleet, but as the first one belonged to Chris Ellis, and was in Airfix Model Trains way back in 1981, I just couldn't do it to that one in particular, so haven't done the others either.

Because they are amazing little beasts for the price, mate. They make US O scale not only doable but pretty damn cheap. You can get them on eBay for about the price of a brand new Atlas freight car.

I have two, the one in the photo an one that has be Anglicised by the previous owner. I'm in two minds as to what to do with it.

A bit of thread necromancy, however ODW is at Mansfield show this weekend.

Here's a couple of photos taken today whilst operating on day one of the show. :)

Unfortunately I had to pull out of day 2 of the show due to illness, but please drop by if you were considering it, it's always a great show every year.
