I have been every year probably for about twenty years and the last few working on a trade stand but I felt this year was lacking, most years there is normally a wow layout or two but this year nothing. A lot of what is at Warley does not interest me but normally there would be a few stand out layouts, but this year even though there was a few I liked there were not really show stoppers.

Also the specialist trade seemed to be getting less each year, and I have heard the parking next year will go up to £20 so if I was a paying punter I would probably think twice if I was deciding to go.

in the past even the continental section would have something which even not my personal interest would have Something they blew me away but this year even that was missing.

David

If the Barrowmore  American layout didn't have a wow factor..size, scenery, stock, operation.. then not sure hat it is you want?

Due to other duties I only managed to look at a few layouts but the level of detail on some layouts is just improving every year...

erm, couldn't resist taking this snap from my demo table .......

And this was Saturday

TBH that is ridiculous. In my opinion those sort of rucksacks should be banned in the hall - there should be a sign by the ticket window and on the website that rucksacks are not allowed in the hall and that a cloakroom is available.

Well I had a great weekend, thanks to the club again for inviting me (for the 6th time!) to run my little loco and stock servicing demo :)

DSC_1052.JPG.103c2fedb8b7f2e9c31a98b096097654.JPG

Highlights of the weekend were firstly helping a young lad who had purchased an old Walthers USA switcher that failed to run on the test track - after opening it up it was DCC fitted with an ancient decoder. After confirming it ran under DCC I tweaked CV29 and off it went on DC to big smiles all round. Secondly showing a lad and his Dad how to clean the wheels of his LNER B12 and the youngster dived in with both feet with the wheel cleaning brush and cotton bud/IPA. Dad had to drag him away from my stand as their train was due :D

Already booked for next year :)

Thanks once again for servicing my class 20. :)

23rd - 24th November 2019 saw the biggest event of the Model Railway calendar, the annual Warley National Model Railway Exhibition, held at the NEC Birmingham.
With no less than 100 Amazing Model Railways in whole variety of scales and sizes from across the country and further afield, as well as the leading Model Railway manufactures showing off there latest releases and prototypes, plus much, much more, the show is a must for anyone!
In this video we take a look as some of the highlights from the show, including the winning layouts from this years Great Model Railway Challenge, a look a the latest prototypes and releases from likes of Hornby, Bachmann, Peco and more, plus just some of the superb Model Railways on display over the course of the weekend!
Hope you enjoy!

I would like to thank Callum for posting this - as a layout owner myself I was there for the whole two days but I only saw the layouts that lay between my layout and the loos!

Sorry Tony that wasn’t a dig at you but there is so often comment in show threads on not enough of one scale that it does seem people are a bit focused / fixated on the scale they model sometimes to the exclusion of others by what they type ;)

When you see posts of ‘too much’ HO, N etc and you’ve taken a layout in those scales you are left wondering if you should bother. We had a very nice weekend with my HOm and one thing I did notice was that no one felt it necessary to make a loud comment about ‘uh it’s foreign’ this time which I took as a pleasant change from previous time’s where people feel it’s necessary to show their displeasure in person. It’s mildly irritating when you’ve worked hard preparing and sharing it that people feel they need to be that rude.

although I don’t model uk, I still appreciate the effort and skill of those uk layouts and of course what ever scale it is.

I thoroughly enjoyed doing the DCC decoder demo over the weekend. Not only did I fit quite a few decoders including sound for osme visitors but I also learned that Wrenn locos can be converted to DCC using a 3D printed bush and also installed sound into O gauge locos for a few people.

If I'd been more alert, i would have brought my 071 along to you for a chip and sound install... a surprise purchase from a stall that had a tremendous range of stock, including Irish just for me :)

it was quite surreal looking at those pictures of Hanaiyah because i realised the hanger in the background is probably the same one as the on he is standing in front of along with rest of 6 sqn in 1954!

The Barrowmore  layout was nice plus there were a few others I liked but generally I thought the show was lacking. I know as the national show it has to encompass everything from 2mm finescale to largescale clockwork but something was missing this year. A view shared by a number of other people I spoke to.

As I have been to most of the NEC shows but this year it did not do it for me.

As an exhibitor (demo), there was limited opportunity to spend time looking at layouts, however I did enjoy the following during my 'back in 15 minutes' time away from my stand.

Sud-Harz - seen it on here but good to see it in the flesh as a huge Harz fan (been to the HSB at least ten times since 2006). I plan to relay the branch line on our GMRC Swiss layout in HOm (metre) gauge and 'Rule 1' dictates that I'll probably end up acquiring a Harz train (or two!) to run up and down it, mixing it with the Glacier Express(!) so it was nice to see some of the range of Harz models in action. Think I'm going to need to start saving up though...

Spirit of Swindon - I'm a bit behind with my RM reading so have only just finished reading the series of articles about this project(!) so, again, great to see it in the flesh. Superb presentation with the changing night n day lighting effects.

North Ballachulish - a stunning piece of backscene painting work (the work of Mike 'Chee Tor' Raithby, I understand) gives this layout a terrific sense of place.

Solent summit - I'm often non-plussed about modular layouts but I thought this presentation worked REALLY well at Warley. Having done Amtrak coast-to-coast 10 years ago, it was great just to watch an Amtrak train steadily make its way from one end to the other, only stopping to wait for a steam-hauled excursion in the other direction. The whole thing seemed to capture the interminable vastness of the Western deserts; perhaps the modular concept works better in N gauge as each module can depict more railway and sense of place in its given size?

Eight ages of steam - very imaginative presentation and the 19th century modules in particular brought the past to life with their individual vignettes.

There you are - not a ruck sack, smelly person or car park rip off in sight! Thanks to all who called by at stand A82. And for those going, see you all at Peterborough in just under two weeks time with both the full GMRC Swiss layout AND a certain large OO tail chaser...

£20 :o if that’s true that be nearly £40 quid if you drive there, Ok costs can be split but many don’t have that luxury. Normally I only drive part way and park for free and get a local train in. But for obvious reasons wasn’t able to do so this year.

But..is it true?

Already started the rabbits running for next year.....

I would judge this to be my most enjoyable Warley so far.  I took a different approach this time, which was to have a lie-in and bimble along not worried about entry times.  I drove to Tile Hill, parked for free and paid £2,50 for a relaxing ride on the 10.31 350 to BI.  Then I strolled leisurely fashion into the hall.

Highlights for me:  Ian Futers Lochty.  I've loved ian's stuff since I first saw it in the RM in the late 70s, and as well as being great but not intimidatingly huge O scale, they're a real connection to my model railway past.

20191123_132227.jpg.c48c892f3194b6d8f9f543b2f102b8b4.jpg

The radio controlled coal fired live steam Atlantic and Owain Glyndwr were stunning - such fun, and how cool to get really smuts and ash, and the smell of coal smoke from your models...  I asked about fireproof baseboards, but the reply was that the baseboards are constantly wet and can't catch fire!  I would love to be able to model like this.

20191123_114129.jpg.8161d08ee80ae55c2f99f61e2ecea66c.jpg

Also a highlight was the very large (literally) display of locomotives including a SDJR 7F and Oliver Cromwell.

I also loved the quarry layout, where three gentlemen were having huge fun with a working drag crane and tipplers.  I also loved the small layout featuring radio controlled vehicles, including loading sand into an OCA open wagon.  I think this one is on RMWeb somewhere...

The roundy roundys don't really do much for me, and I can't see the N gauge stuff from the viewing distances allowed, so I tend to enjoy the big stuff more, just a personal preference.  The show felt a little less crowded than before, maybe one of the benefits of going later and staying later.  I managed to purchase a Murphys Models 071 I've been after for some time, so that made me happy.  The trip home slightly less relaxing as the train I was aiming for (which did appear on the emergency timetable) in fact was cancelled, so I had an extended wait on a chilly BI.

There was also a sign opposite our trade stand that said save money and get next years Warley tickets for this years price, so I guess the cost of admission will go up.

Spirit of Swindon was nice, many layouts were spoilt by being poorly presented.

I only spotted it on way out so couldn’t appreciate it that much, due to the crowds.

Apologies guys.

£12 is for Mon-Fri

Sat & Sun is still £9

I got the wrong price car when looking the charges up last week.

I didn’t didn’t even notice what price came up on the ticket machine when I paid, I was that knackered at the end of the day.

I consider that a reasonable charge by UK standards.

Try parking at an airport for a day, or in London and see how much that costs.

Yes, it's called 'A Remote Depot'. I can't remember who owns it but it's an entertaining little layout.
