Dounreay - A Far North Terminus in H0

Much progress with stock, ahead of Dounreay's debut at the Kenavon exhibition in east Reading on Saturday 18 February.

Reworked my bogie inners to correct the wheelbase and finished 6 pairs, so the Mk1s are pretty much done, the pair of PMVs have wheels, paint and glazing, the 24/1 is decalled, glazed and fitted with Kadees and I'm working my way through the freight stock.

The Bulleid Third Open is finished as Sc1466S, one of the dozen or so sent north of the border in the mid-1960s to replace Mk1s converted to REPs and TCs.

The layout also now has it's own section on Maidenhead club's website: http://www.mmdmrc.org.uk/dounreay.html

The scratchbuilt Salmon and the 2 Grampuses that accompany it are decalled up and just need some grot, while a bunch of 16t mins, assorted VB revenue vans, highs, lows, Plate and Tube are getting their numbers and letters.

The VB stock is also having the Lima brake gear reworked to bring the shoes in line with the wheels and tiebars fitted.

I did find my spare Toad chassis, so am pondering making a Stanier 20t brake van body for it out of Evergreen car siding... watch this space, as they say...

Some final testing before Dounreay's debut on Saturday, with the fiddlestick made and wired up last evening. This did reveal that the Derby Type 2 was a tad light and struggled to haul trains, so this had some weight added this morning, which helped.

Apart from that though, things seem good to go.

Found a slightly knackered Lima 20t brake van in the stash, one end of the body cracked and broken.

Chassis still in reasonable nick, so I've started scratchbuilding a Stanier LMS 20t brake van body from Evergreen car-siding and assorted microstrip.

Probably won't get it done for Kenavon on Saturday, but may have it with me as a wip for display.

A little more progress to report, a set of scratchbuilt platform lamps, signage and the backscene now in place.

The lamps used the Chris Nevard method, a length of 3mm bamboo rod, a nail and some plastic tube.

The backscene used a panorama taken from Google Street View, played around with in MS Paint and printed across 6 landscape A4 sheets which were pritted together and trimmed to shape.

Great little layout and well done.

How did you make your totem signs?

Thanks!

The totems I did using this source:

http://homepages.enterprise.net/iainlogan/modelrail/free.html

That included the large layout sign and also the tiny ones on the platform lamps, which I printed on thin card at about 10% scale (possibly even smaller)

The Stanier 20t brake has been completed and a second Derby Two is well underway using the other bogie from the Roco V90 under a Lincoln Locos 3D-printed bodyshell.

A bunch of exhibitions coming up, DEMU Showcase in Sutton Coldfield Sat 17 & Sun 18 June, Maidenhead Club's summer show in Knowl Hill Sat 24 June and Woolwich on 10th December

Had a few hours of gentle plasticard-wrangling over the weekend to scratchbuild an Insul-Fish conversion of an LNER diagram 134 fish van, a handful of which lasted in fish service to the mid/late-60s, so just creeping into my timeframe.

Rather pleased with how it came out, paint, decals* and a coat of grot to add. May well do another in due course.

*assuming I can find the safe place I put my clear decal sheets...

The 2nd Derby Two has some paint and will be finished as D5114, GSYE, decals from Railtec ordered.

I'll be making good use of the test track at the club this evening!

Insul-Fish and a BR Insulated van finished and I've also redone Dounreay's backscene. Correct length this time and applied with more care. The horizon is a few cm lower, giving more sky.

And I tracked down a couple of period poster images online and printed them off to help set the timeline.

Pretty much ready for DEMU Showcase next weekend in Sutton Coldfield, followed by Maidenhead club's summer exhibition in Knowl Hill the Saturday after.

Later in the year Dounreay will be at Bracknell show on Sun 29 Oct and Woolwich on Sun 10 Dec.

Really pleased to see Dounreay at DEMU, Alan. I'd forgotten that it was on RMweb so I've just been back through all the posts that I've missed. It seems that its next appearances are at a bit of distance from Manchester so it may be a while before I can catch up with it again.

With a show outing approaching (the Kenavon show in east Reading, mid-Feb) I thought I'd best crack on with enough stock to run a service.

So a selection of my reworked Lima Mk1s have been painted, glazed, decalled (thank you RailTec!) and I've worked out a way of making scale-length BR1 bogies to go under them.

I'd already made a set of master sideframes from cutting & shutting the Playcraft shorty BR1, but wasn't happy with the Worsley etched inners (rescaled from their TT3, I think, which means an odd/non-standard axle length)

I'd already decided on using 12mm OO disc wheelsets as being close enough for 3'6" coach discs in H0.

Having proved the concept with the trailing bogie on my Lincoln Locos 24/1, I've gone with a layered 80 thou plasticard inside-bearing core to which my cast resin sideframes can be attached. As Dounreay's passenger rakes are at most load 3, the friction inherent in the design shouldn't be an issue.

Some good work there...

Mk1 mk2 and mk3 bogies are available on several 3d stl sights just scale to fit

Interesting and potentially useful. My only concern is when rescaling down to H0, what axle length would be required? 24.5mm pin-points is fairly standard in the scale.

I'd respectfully point out that BR1s ride on 3ft6in wheels, which scales to 14mm in 4mm, rather than 12.6mm. In H0 I use 12mm disc wheels (slightly under diameter, but within the acceptable wear limits of the prototype).

In any event, I have a few dozen of my resin BR1 sideframes still to use, plus a bunch of 80 thou plasticard, but thanks for the suggestion. I would probably be interested in Commonwealth bogies, if they are under consideration.

When rescaled to Ho unlock unerversal scaling and widen width to suit

There is a commonwealth on thingiverse I've printed to 3mm it would only be use as a cosmetic overlay as no hole for pinpoints and is very delicate..

Aiming to have this LMS 50ft BG added to the fleet before Woolwich exhibition on Sunday.

It's a cut & shut from a Rivarossi Third using Silhouette - cut sides.

A very pleasant day at Woolwich exhibition, Liz line and the 244 played ball allowing me to get there and back with no problems.

Still need to get decals for the 50ft BG, will get an order in to Railtec in a day or so (need the numbers for the VoR too)
