009 Rusty Makeover

I need the give Rusty a quick once over so I can use it for a group meet and show in early July. Its not going to be an exact replica of a Ruston but it will look a bit more like one than Rusty.

I've dismantled it, removed the face, buffers and coupling hook then filled the holes.

The windows and doors are solid plastic so I drilled around them, cut them out with a knife then cleaned up with a file.

I removed the four exhausts on the right and side and the one nearest the cab on the left hand side.

The front head has had two pieces of self adhesive lead foil added across then a piece of A1 Models Honeycombe grill stuck inbetween them.

The cab roof has had a piece of self adhesive lead foil stuck over it with a slight overhang. This will slightly add a little weight to replace the piece unscrewed from under the cab roof.

Everything will now have a good rubdown and a repaint.

A great improvement over orange 'Rusty'. Will be interesting to see your finished 'Ruston'. Presumably the cab is completely filled by the chassis/motor when in situ so there's little room to add extra weight and/or a driver? How's the slow running capabilities of the chassis? HC

I've only tried it on a couple of yards of track and it runs nice and smoothly.

 

I've added a pic with the chassis fitted to show whats in the cab.

I've done a little more to the Rusty conversion.

Looking at some pics I decided to file off the upper grills. 

I placed the loco on its chassis and installed Greenwich (nem type) Couplings.

They stick out a bit far but until i've tried it on the layout i'll leave them. Narrow Planet diesel loco buffer plates would probably be a better look.

Someone kindly pointed out I shouldn't have removed an exhaust for the 4 cylinder engine, my mistake.

I measured the cast on exhausts they measure about 6 inch in diameter which seems a bit big so I removed them all and replaced them with four pieces of solder which I then drilled out once the superglue had set. They now measure about 3 inches. I've fitted them in a typical 2 + 2 arrangment.

The loco just needs a number, glazing and a driver.
