OO Escort Van

Hi all

Anyone know if there’s a Mk4 Escort Van available in 4mm? Doing some research before I start planning my new layout and want to incorporate something similar to the photo. I’d probably consider similar size vans of other makes as well.

Here's my completed Maestro van from the Shapeways 3d print (along with a K2 Sherpa, a modified Rail Transport Images model). Not cheap but well worth the money, time and effort:

Thanks for those suggestions. Some great looking models. The escort van was so common I’m surprised no one has made one yet. I’m sure Oxford will do one eventually.

I particularly like the Sherpa, always a favourite of mine.

I wonder if anyone will come up with a body to fit on a (lengthened) Oxford Escort XR3 floor pan. And likewise a VW Caddy pick-up from the Oxford VW Golf.

That would work quite well. Perhaps one of the 3D printing experts could get that made?

I have been looking for various other types and came across this photo of a Fiesta van which would be interesting and fairly easy to recreate with an Oxford model.

Edit - on second thoughts it looks more like an Orion or something, I’m not actually sure.

Springside did do a kit version of the 1981 Escort van (like that but with the original front), though it isn't the greatest of models.

The right hand van is an Escort again, same generation as the one in the middle (and in the first posting) but is based directly on the 2-door estate - in effect a competitor to the estate car based Bedford Astravan (though less successful). Again Springside did a kit for the 1981 estate, but you'd need to fill the side windows and omit the rear seats and update the front if you want the 1986 version. Same provisos regarding the kit - not easy and not that good.

The Orion was a saloon version of the Escort. The name wasn't used on any other body types.

There was a Fiesta van - basically the hatch without the back windows and seats.

Thanks for that info. I did think it was too long to be a fiesta so that explains that. I’ve never seen one like that.

The photos are borrowed from Flickr where I end up spending quite a while browsing some days

Have a look on page 2 of the Road Vehicles forums and you should find one called 'Ford Escort MK2 Cortina MK4 etc Available in OO'. There is a link in here that takes you to Shapeways 3D stuff and a supplier called Digitawn. They do 3D models of both types of van shown in the photo you found on Flickr.

I wonder if wheels and glazing from Oxford Diecast can be used with these?

They do come with wheels, I’m not sure how they will look.

As for glazing, some Krystal kleer might work but I’m not sure how much use it would be for a windscreen. Would need a bit more research.

The postage is quite high so I’d probably order a few at once. Quite good that you can get different levels of finish as well, but go for the top finish you’re looking at £30

It was called the Ford Escort Kombi van based on the estate car shell. Orion was an Escort with a boot.

Going off topic slightly, I've always found it interesting that the booted/saloon versions of small/midsized cars were far more popular in mainland Europe than here

It’s a strange one. I always loved the Orion, a great looking car.

If buying from Shapeways any of these, get the medium quality prints , not the cheapest. The difference is well worth the extra for the lack of hassle in cleaning up the castings.

My photo shows the old Springside Escort 4 van (right), not recommended, and  The Escort 4 Kombi from Shapeways (left) a very nice job, as yet unfinished. The windows could be cut out but I have represented with a coat of grey paint, varnished.

For front window glazing I got the tip from this forum, possibly from Bernard. Use 2 or 3 litre fizzy drink bottles so you don't have to form a curve. If need be you can even have curves in two different dimensions depending where you chose the section of the bottle to cut out.

Yes, I've been recommending this since I first produced the old Carkit-4 range 30-odd years ago. The last model used the biggest screens at the front and rear:

On the Cavalier even the side windows are noticeably curved (Note, this was a pre-production version; the final one was rather better).

Corgi did this van. I don't know its exact scale but presume it's 4mm.

Thanks for the photo.

The only Corgi ones I can find are 1:43 or 1:36, I will keep looking to see if they do make a smaller one but it appears to be long discontinued
